The Complete History of the Latvian Legion (Latvian SS)

Ойын-сауық

Did you know that the country with the most volunteers to the Waffen-SS was the little Baltic nation of Latvia? In all, around 100,000 Latvians ended up serving in the German armed forces or labour forces such as the Todt organization. The Latvians felt that they had been liberated from their previous occupiers, the Soviet Union and World War 2 was a much different story for the Latvians than it was for us in the West. To them, joining up with Germany made complete sense and the two of them got on incredibly well and both fought till the end both in Latvia and in Germany. Until now the two nations had hated eachother but now the two were inseparable and their fates were intertwined. This is the story of the Latvian Legion who chose to work with the Germans for a hope of a free and independent Latvia.

My Latvian great grandfather got drafted in the Latvian legion (19th division) and my family still have his diaries from ww2 era where he talked in detail about what happened at that time almost day by day. He suffered a bad back injury during training and never got sent to the front. His brother also got drafted and fought until the end of the war in the Kurland pocket until its surrender, spent some time in the Soviet filtration camp after the war but didn't get deported to Siberia, because he wasn't a volunteer and they let him go home. He still was considered a fascist by the Soviets, so he couldn't get good jobs after the war even though he was highly educated. My other great grandfather (also Latvian) got drafted by red army in 1944 and served in the Latvian riflemen batallion. Both my great grandfatherers are now dead but I still remember as a kid when we had family gatherings both my great grandfathers were always siting somewhere else away from the people and talking to each other about ww2

It's fairly standart, simple stuff that you'll find in traditional inns and restaurants - the people have after all been mainly agricultural farmers in cold eastern Europe (both Lithuanians and Latvians). As a Lithuanian, I may be biased towards the Baltic States even though I try to be objective, and using certain historical facts I believe that Latvians and Estonians (and us Lithuanians too if Gen. Plechavičius wouldn’t be so chauvinist and allow his subordinates to form Lithuanian SS divisions, there were two divisions in the plans allegedly) would be unlikely to change sides like Hungarians, Bulgarians, Italians and Romanians did. We already did tatste the Soviet occupation and all the horrors it provided for a whole year, where not only Jews suffered (like in the case of German administration of our countries during 1941-1945), but literally everyone and for no reasonable cause in 9/10 cases. Also, the fact that we had lost our Independence (unlike other German allies prior to WWII) and at the time Germans were literally the only, be it slim, but still, realistic chance of regaining Independence, forming our own armies (forming the national army in case of gaining Independence was also the main reason why Western Ukrainians joined SS Galizien). Remaints of both 1st and 2nd Latvian, some Lithuanian Territorial Defence units, Wehrmaht units and from what I read, some Estonian renemants of Narva Battalion or either Estonial SD units held out until 10th of May 1945 being the last Reich’s official fighting formations to carry out the fighting in the Courland pocket. Eventually many were captured, some deserted disguised as civilians, others kept on the fight as Forest Brothers. I know that it is too late to speculate as the final say was held by Hitler and he disliked the Balts mainly not for racial or ethnic reasons but due to imperial views held against us, also, Hitler being a history buff lol, he knew that Lithuanian tribes had beef with Teutonic and Livonian Orders for centuries, at least this is what I had read about in few seperate sources. Descisions came too little too late; we Lithuanians held reasonable but from German point of view, unrealistic demands when it came to on what to agree when forming fighting units (there is a lot of information online about Gen. Plechavičius beef with heads of Reichkomissarriat Ostland). Ironically, Germans did continue preparing Lithuanian paratroopers in Luftwaffe schools in Germany, and it’s cadres later become all involved in a decade (often even longer) long armed anti Communist occupational resistance. My gramdfather’s brother, Alfonsas Volūšis (callsign Jovaras) was a squad leader and got killed when surrounded in a forest in Ukmergė district in February 1947. Granfather was a young teen then, had a Nogant revolver and often carried a grenade (with which he had an accident when discharging for a reason unknown to me and it went off too close to him, I remember him having this weird stance and a limp walk) and as he was too young to join actual armed unit he was a local contact/informer for the men doing the actual fighting. He would tell me stories when I would come to visit him in my childhood, I remember him always greeting me in the hallway with his old dog, always saying the same greeting: “Hello, partisan!”, then hugging me and taking me home to have some food he had cooked. He also always would make me French fries made in this strange way and would tell me a story how German tank unit that rolled in in July 1941. He told me first all the kids hid in the bush and peeping at the impressing German armour until they were called by the souldiers. They were cooking potatoes thinly cut, frying them in oil. That was how he would make fries for me and tell that story. He died in 2006. I wish I could ask him much more now. P.S. Miracilouslly, him or his family was harrased by NKVD not so severely; however, my maternal side or family suffered greatly, mainly with deportations to Siberia, few also got killed in action as Forest Brothers or got accused as “suppporters of nationalist bandits”. Sadly many young generation Lithuanians do not know their interesting family history.

Some German PoWs were in GULAG camps until 1956 and some German scientists were in the ussr until the early 1960s. Some German PoW simply died in GULAG camps, so out of 100,000 captured in Stalingrad returned to Germany just a few thousands.

During WWII, a total of 1.675 million Poles were deported to the gulag system in Russia. Some of them returned and published memoirs of their time in Russia. In many of them, Latvians were noticed and described as the best organized national group in the gulag system, surpassing Poles in many aspects. Pols were pretty well organized, but they always looked with a little jealousy and total admiration at the level of solidarity and support among Latvian prisoners.

Do you plan to actually do all the nationalities that had fought for the Germans? If needed, I could pretty easily provide a ton of info for Lithuanians, that while did not have SS units, had a ton of ones fighting under the Wehrmacht and some that were very noteworthy(i.e, the 7th Lithuanian Auxiliary Police battalion was encircled during the Operation Uranus, and while this is often said to be in Stalingrad, in fact it was encircled in another town nearby, anyhow, they managed to fully breakout) or the special situation pre war(June Uprising, for example, is very unknown in the west. Some other interesting claims, i.e the Lithuanian ambassador claims to have been offered the entire Czech arsenal in exchange of cooperation after the annexation of Memel.

Sweden quietly obliged and handed them over to be murdered. I think your bitch-ass king did an equally bitch-ass apology of "oops, sorry, haha" in the late 90s or something.

Let me guess - the Swiss do their best to avoid the subject. Whenever people start discussing ww2, the Swiss immediately start whining how "it was hard for, too, so terribly hard. Our men had to sit on the borders, waiting to see if the Germans would invade." Because that would make sense - Hitler invading the very country that stored his Jewish gold. That's like robbing the very bank that holds your money. And don't even get me started on the "sitting on the border was very hard, you see." Yes, apparently it was more strenuous than actually fighting, dying and having your whole family get deported.

The German nobility had a lot of influence mainly in Latvia (since Livonian Order days) and to some lesser extent, Estonia. Both nations hadn’t had an actual recognised statehood until 1918 (though, being so low in numbers managed to maintain their language, culture and identity in general after centuries of opressive foreign occupations). Lithuanians had different story; many Lithuanian-Baltic tribes did unite in 11-12th Century to repulse Crussades (Prussians were a Baltic tribe that did not unify under Lithuanian banner and undortunatelly got conquered by Teutonic Order, men killed and women asimilated, also providind a platzdarm/stepping ground for constant attacks on unified Lithuanian lands; Latvians suffered similliar fate and were conquered by Livonian Order, which also caused many headaches for us from the North, see Battle of the Sun). As Lithuanians succesfully fended off Cruissaders many a time. Final mass battle was the Grünwald/Žalgirio Battle lead by Vytautas The Great that ended up in our victory. Unlike Latvians or Estonians (that I love like my own kind) we did have our recocnised statehood, then, a successful union with Poland, Germans did not had that much of an inpact on Lithuania.

In this region the Germans did more to honor the Atlantic Charter than the treacherous warmongering FDR and Churchill would ever do. Eastern Europe was abandoned to Stalin, only Finland escaped this fate, and without German assistance they could never have hoped to do so.

I have a friend who's grandfather was drafted by the soviets at the start of the war, captured and then forced to join the Latvian Legion. after the war he and his family were able to escape to Australia where they still are.

That doesn’t sound correct, Germany usually didn’t force conscript POW’s that’s more of a Soviet thing the common myth of Germany conscripting prisoners is overblown as the “prisoners” recruited were in prison for “illegal hunting” which was special even though it’s so minor because they usually never used prisoners

@@david-468 I learned more about him from my friend recently. He was force conscripted by the soviets but when he was captured he volunteered for the legion. where he was then stationed on the Italian Front until the end of the war.
