Geography Now did you have to use a picture of the old Euros? - as old series €5, €10, €20 & €50 notes have now been withdrawn. Also none of those notes ever entered circulation as they are the initial designs drawn up in 1999 before they got updated etc. Just letting you know as I’m sure you like to represent the country as accurately as possible!

I am from Suomi (Finland) and I used to talk about Latvija, sadli havent been there yet, only in Estonia Tallinn. Atleast you Latvians know to say Somija instead of the Swedish way, nothing wrong about Swedes tho, lol. And I thought it was only when Suomi is mentioned by foreighners was big news. My people make it a big thing, never thought how you Latvijans see it, sorry.

We Estonians feel close to Finland because of similar culture, language etc. BUT we love you Latvia and Lithuania because of our similar pasts, because you understand what we’ve been through! Anyway, why do we have to catogorize? Estonia can be Nordic and Baltic at the same time. Estonia is complex, it’s not like anything else. We are a mix. That is why I love our flag so much. It shows how different we are, it’s unique 🇪🇪

Latvia is a mix, too! Even more than Estonia in certain aspects. Having both Baltic and Finnic tribes as ancestors and speaking the only first-syllable-stress Indo-European language, Latvians can surely relate to both Lithuania and Estonia as their brothers. :) Livonian period connects us more to Estonia and so does the high density of forests and low density of people.

Just a note. In Latvian all words are stressed on the first syllable. You've stressed all Latvian names on the last syllable, the exact opposite of how words in Latvian are pronounced.

MC King-Minecraft It sounds like a cute and slightly retarded version of Lithuanian. And I'm sure Latvians think our language is a retarded version of Latvian as well. We can sort of understand each other. And the signs in Latvia made me laugh my ass off. For example there's a slogan of some cafe in Riga that says "Vieta kur paēst!' which, in Lithuanian means virtually the same - 'a place to eat' but "paėst" is basically a rude /animal version of 'to eat' in Lithuanian (to explain better - 'valgyt' = 'to eat', 'ėst' = 'to eat' but meant to describe animals eating).

As a Canadian with Latvian blood, thank you. My Great-Grandparents grabbed my Grandfather and Great Uncle and fled the country shortly after the German invasions and wound up here in Canada. I've always been interested in getting to know more about our heritage, yet my Grandfather (Visvaldis) was a strong...stoic, bear of a man who refused to talk about life prior to moving here. My last name, which shares a name with a Parish in Latvia, is currently donned by 14 people on Earth...the family that fled the country to ensure future generations...it's name will probably die with me. It's impossible for me to find any history on my family name as the Russian were famous for just burning down anything with historical record in their wake. I am proud to be of Latvian descent and have devoured any information I can find on where we all originally came from, so I appreciate this video.

Similar story to my Grandad who is now 95 years old. He ended up in England instead.

Being Latvian I was skeptical at first - with all Soviet history thing going on and many people capitalise on it being Only thing that Latvia is known for. But you did a great job of being respectful and not over-dramatic about our history. I’m super happy that this video exists.

I can definitely recommend going to Liepaja and visit the Karosta Military Prison! You can also visit it without the prisoner treatment ;D And exactly 100 years after a Latvian lost his 5 Santini coin (1922) near the cinematic Artillery battery No 1 Bunker at the Baltic sea near Liepaja, I fund it in the sand. Aside from that I also recommend visiting the Kemeri National Park Swamp and the new Occupation Museum in Riga!

Barbs, despite Riga being located on the river, the Daugava is mostly a commercially navigable river and the port of Riga is the biggest in terms of tonnage in Latvia. It used to be one of the biggest cities bar none in the Baltic Sea and was part of the Hanseatic League. Riga is located only a few km upstream and that is no problem in terms of facilitating trade. That is not to say that the ports of Ventspils and Liepaja aren't massive, but the way you said it was like Riga doesn't have a port which is just false.

Correction. Skolos means a lot of debt. School in Lithuanian is Mokykla. Also, when it comes with the alphabet, š is pronounced as SH (like sh-oot), ž is g (g-iraffe) and we pronounce all of the letters, cuz we ain't French! Other than that, good job!!

Please note that the Livonian tribe did not become estonia, rather they assimilated with the balts. This is the reason why the Latvian language has the stress only on the first syllable.

There was also some immigration of Germans. After 1500 about 90% of all Prussians was identifying itself as German. The last old Prussian was living in the early 19th Century. The other Prussia (that eventually formed Germany) was called after the territory, not the Baltic people

My mom is Latvian so I speak Latvian fluently. It’s a little funny when you say things in Latvian. Absolutely no hate towards you. I actually love that you talk about Latvia so people can acknowledge our country more :)
