The Colours of Quail Part 2 - Gold/Isabelle Descubre Codorniz Isabela. Caille Isabelle SUB FR/SPA

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The Golden quail have been instrumental in making my dreams come true, for a coturnix to raise her own chicks. My understanding is that the Golden quail I have belong to the two main types of 'Golds', which in English are known as the Italian and the Manchurian. However, some breeders insist that these are alternate names for the same golden bird! Whatever your belief, there are nuances due to patterns and markings, so the Italian can be subdivided into the Italian Gold and the Italian Speckled. In French and Spanish these quail are known as the Isabelle/Isobel/Isabela for reasons explained in the film. Equally important, is the vexed question of genetics in the golden colouring of fur and feathers; i.e. the yellow allele, which is lethal when homozygous. Hi Ana - that is such a lovely comment and I appreciate it. I really enjoyed putting this film together, though it took quite a time to find and edit all the clips to the sound, so your comment is doubly appreciated! Much love, Sue xx

Thanks Mags! Has your male bonded to one female? I guess it's a bit late in the season now, they are probably more thinking of keeping warm as a group than pairing off! Hope you got my message with my email. Much love from sunny but very cold Normandie (It's a good job I wrote that - I forgot to bring my orchid plant in for its hibernation and hopeful flowering). Awe, Marcie, Thanks! I hope you will get some more quail, they truly are wonderful birds. The Goldens are just so tame too and they so need good people to raise them. When I think of the conditions I have seen some kept in when I have gone to purchase them, well it just makes me mad. You take care too! Much love from your friend in Normandie, Sue xx

I caught your video as I was getting ready to sign off my computer. The quail colours are splendid! The chicks are hard workers for their size. I always enjoy the information you provide about the various birds you have and show close-ups in the videos. Stay safe and well, Sue and Andy. Thank you.

Hi there and thanks so much for your comments, as always! Even the tiny quail chicks work really hard at finding food. being precocial they start early, I just always have to be careful that they are warm enough. The mother quail instinctively knows that they should not overdo the foraging and calls them in for naps but the hens don't always have the same understanding. I believe because chicks tend spend their first days relying on the mother and then they don't need such high temperatures (95 - 90F during the first weeks). I always like to see where people are from - we are neighbours, despite the ocean(s). Much love, Sue xx

Thank you for this video! I learned so much and I didn’t even realize that I had a 3 varieties of golden quail. I do have a question. You mentioned that you wouldn’t cross 2 goldens together, but in the video I noticed that you were hatching some. I was wondering what varieties you crossed to get golden chicks? I had 2 goldens, a male and female, breeed and the female sat on the eggs and they hatched. However, the chicks developed wry neck on day 2 and died. I am trying to figure out if one of the reasons that they died is because both parents were golden.

Hi Nikki, thank you so much for your lovely comments! My understanding is it is the pure wheat straw gold that carries the fatal gene, so I am never sure about breeding from two Manchurian quail. Funnily enough my Manchurians have never pair-bonded but tend to bond with White and Tuxedo. However, the Italian Gold and Italian Speckled have paired. I think genetics is so complicated and still so little studied that I'm not sure how well the lethal yellow gene is understood. There is also a 'conditional lethal gene' in which the gene is only lethal when another factor is in play such as Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PDD) or favism, so for example wry neck is a severe deficiency in a potential of 13 vitamins and several minerals that work in synergy with them. I do have a two-part written article and film on this condition if you are interested: holistic-hen.blogspot.com/2020/01/wry-necktorticollis-what-is-it-initial.html#.XiBGsXfk-V4 I find quail are susceptible to deficiency in the first few days, and as quail are omnivores with the emphasis being on the parents feeding a majority of invertebrate protein in the first stages of development, it might be an idea to give them a high wild protein diet. The lethal yellow allele means that the chicks do not actually survive to hatch but die in the embryo stage. It is so sad that you lost your chicks but it has happened to me with no symptoms at all, my thoughts are that in general domesticated quail have been weakened by centuries of incorrect food and poor living conditions in hatcheries. I believe though with more and more people keeping them now on better food and in a better environment things are beginning to change! All the very best from Normandie and a big hug to your quail, Sue xx

I love the way you keep your quail, I had free range bantams when I was a child & lived out in the country. I now live in town with limited space & am so tempted to get a few pet quail. I would love to hatch out some eggs with my kids but am worried about ending up with excess males that fight. I've been reading conflicting advice saying males either can live together or they fight to the death! (we are all vegetarians so eating the males is out of the question). Is male aggression a big problem in your experience?

Hi there and thank you so much for your lovely comments, they are appreciated! With regard to quail and aggression; the history of quail with humans, as with chickens, starts with fighting. That is actually the reason they were both taken from the wild in the first place, apologies if you know this already but I think it helps to put everything in context. My main experience is that if you feed quail correctly, so with a maximum of invertebrate protein and green leafy veg and a minimum of grain, then they will not get either the nervous disorders nor aggressive mood swings that they so often do in captivity. The second trigger, in my experience, for the latter is environment, they do need space and they need it in particular in the breeding season. I have always had a mixed sex flock and they get on well but if they form monogamous pairs in the breeding season, then these will become territorial over nesting areas. It's just a matter of chasing each other off their 'turf' but it can create a difficult atmosphere. On the plus side, any quail that is kept well and particularly on an organic diet, will always find a home, so you could swap them or sell them. If you have enough space to set up a small greenhouse, the experience would be wonderful for your kids and quail are very easy to tame and make great pets. If you are thinking of starting from scratch and hatching them then be aware they will need high temperatures in the first though weeks, so unless you are somewhere perpetually warm or have the facility to keep them warm over Winter when still juvenile then I would leave it until late Spring. Hope this is of use and all the very best from Normandie, Sue xx

@@Pavlovafowl Thanks for your reply, I didn't realise that fighting was the reason they were domesticated. I do have very limited space (aprox 10' x 20' courtyard) but on the plus side I have been making lots of bokashi compost & I have huge amounts of organic worms/slugs/woodlice/snails etc & high (5 1/2 -6') stone wall all round so supervised free-range time might be an option. The quails could turn slugs into eggs & fertiliser for my veggies
