The Colours of Quail Part 3 - The English White & Panda La codorniz blanca inglesa La caille blanche

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The English White has even less written about it than my two previous colours, except of course for the Texas A&M Jumbo version, which is very well documented. I still hoping some day to come across a good reference book on the subject but until then I'm going to discuss personality and behaviour, which is actually probably more of interest. The Whites and the Pandas are wonderful little birds, sometimes rather shy and less 'pushy' than the Golds, particularly when it comes to nesting. However, they bond well with other birds and particularly well with humans, making great gardening companions and brilliant pets. Despite their high visibility, they are great free-rangers and foragers, so you'll need to keep an eye on them, if you take them out where there are predators.

Thanks to Lucusgonze at Freesound for his nostalgic rendition of 'There's No Place Like Home'. The arrangement, for guitar and mandolin, is from the June 1st, 1898 edition of S. S. Stewart's 'Banjo and Guitar Journal'.
Quail are such fascinating little sweethearts! Most people say they can’t be free ranged and keep them caged up just for an egg factory. Thank you for showing us a glimpse of your wonderful ‘Garden of Eden.’

Aww Thank you Gina, You are so welcome. When I first came here, someone told me quail and pheasants couldn't be on the ground because they would die of some unspecified disease! I felt like asking how they survived in the wild, presumably perpetual flight but I just thought I'd be wasting my breath! The internet makes things worse because people just cut and paste stuff and I'm guessing have never kept quail. Hope it is warmer with you than it is here at the moment. being near the sea we usually don't get frost until the New Year but it's feeling like it's going to freeze tonight. I have a golden Sebright Frizzle (plus something else) cross rooster - he is our barometer. If he sleeps up the tree, all's well but if he roosts in the outbuildings then we're in for rain, a cold night or snow - tonight he gobbled down his supper and hurried inside! Much love, Sue xxx

Hi there, Thank you so much for your lovely comments, they are very much appreciated. I've just uploaded Part 4 of the series, this time it's the turn of the Tuxedo, so you might like to see that too! There is also a set of written articles to go with these films, so you may find that of interest, here is the link to the first one: holistic-hen.blogspot.com/2018/01/colours-of-coturnix-quail-celebration.html#.WliZtXBrykA Good luck with your great quail adventure and all the very best from Normandie, Sue

Hi Charles, Thank you so much. I did try the white tie too but I couldn't get it to look right, I need to photograph one and paste it on in GIMP. I'll try that in the next video - it will be a good challenge! All the very best, Sue xx

I have found that the white were particularly easy to tame and very good to garden with and thus free-range. All the very best from Normandie, Sue xx

Thank you! You are very kind to say so - this is a real niche channel, most people who keep quail keep them in cages and are interested in getting them to lay as many eggs as possible. Mine lay just at their own pace but their eggs are highly nutritious and if you've seen my early videos, then you will know that these eggs alone cured my husband's hay fever and eczema - so we are eternally grateful to these wonderful birds. We hope through these films that more people will realise that quail can and should be raised without cages. All the very best from Normandie, Sue xx

The Video, all too short, sadly. I've suddenly become very interested in keeping Quail and read (listen to and watch) all that I can find on KZread. I love your channel. It is quitely demonstrative. I have no land, just a terrasse in an apartment block but I am wondering if I can justify raising a pair Quail. Difficulty being 6 mths of the year Winter. Choice : to buy some land.

Hi there Carolle, this is an on-going series so it's not finished yet and there are already two previous parts - I just made a playlist, to hopefully this will make it easier for people to find: kzread.info/head/PLHgq6wrWg6dedleuWYVToUj-BGgMLENbc There is a whole issue now with making long videos for KZread, if viewers (in particular subs) don't watch the whole thing, your channel gets hammered and pushed even further down the ratings. As my aim, apart for trying to keep going on here, is to primarily spread the word about keeping quail organically in a natural environment, then I can't afford (in both senses of the word) to be buried ever deeper! With regard to keeping quail, no despite all the propaganda you shouldn't keep quail in a small space, they are free-spirits. Yes you need land - otherwise you are captive to the system, so compare this supposed 4th Industrial Revolution to the original one and you'll see how disastrously people's health and food choices changed back in the 18th century. However, there are such things as 'chicken shares', where you either invest money or your labour in someone's chickens and you get to 'meet and greet' or just pay for the upkeep and get eggs in return. There are similar 'shares' for cows, sheep, pigs etc., Therefore, how about seeing if you can find the same for quail? Other than that, see if you can take over an unused garden in the neighbourhood. That way you do the work and the garden owner gets a share of the produce, which you negotiate. There are so many ideas out there at the moment and with the garden share - there are even people who have formed farms from having several garden shares and made a viable business out of it. Hope this is of use and all the very best, Sue xx

Golden quails will be a thing in the future that’ll be something to see. Not even speculating I’ve seen quails with golden stripes it’s a matter of time before some talented breeder gets his hand on that yellow stripe mutation and starts producing individual with full yellow feathers.

Just to let you know I've uploaded the Tuxedo video - I had trouble with my pc and had to order a new part and all the footage for the film was on the hard drive so I was stuck.
