Chick Hatching in a Wall Planter. The Silly Sitters' Blessed Event

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I made a previous film about these two and whilst we were away on holiday, there was no one monitoring the planter - I forgot to mention it to our neighbours. Now, as the chick starts to hatch, I need to move the two prospective mothers. As Oscar Wilde wrote of his character Jack Worthing: 'To be born, or at any rate bred, in a hand-bag'...( or wall planter) ..'seems to me to display a contempt for the ordinary decencies of family life that reminds one of the worst excesses of the French Revolution.' Whatever, we'll have chickens nesting in trees next...hold on a minute we already did. Life in the forest garden...never a dull moment. #Chickhatchinginwallplanter #ForestGardenPoultry

Hi there, Great to hear from you! The white hen stopped sitting in the wall planter for several days and seemed to go off being broody but a week later was back sitting with the cream hen. The chick is white but with a few really tiny dark spots. The white hen has occasional discreet dark patches on a very few feathers - so I'm thinking she came back to the planter and laid one egg and then went broody again! The chick has a lovely personality too, so friendly and is coping very well with her strange mothers, one of whom obviously sees itself as a chick. Maybe this is from having to spend so much time underneath the other hen as there was really hardly room for the two of them in that planter! All the very best from sunny France, Sue xx

Aaww thank you so much! Great to hear from you! She's quite a bit bigger now and like her mother has a few tiny black flecks in her plumage and she's still as sweet as ever! All the very best, Sue xx

Hens: (indignant squeaky toy noises) Me: 🤣 I agree with you though: every hatch is a new miracle.

Thank you for the great comments! These two mothers are really strange, by any standards. The white one now is brooding the chick on one side and the cream hen gets underneath her other wing. They also seem to be confused as to for whom they are finding food. They both find food for and call for the chick but then they eat each others finds but as they are now outside in a nutrient rich area of the garden, the chick gets more than enough. The chick is also a great eater and very speedy, so whilst they are representing food finds to each other, she, (I believe it is) swoops in and gobbles it up. Yes I do feel intrusive when filming but I try to keep it to a minimum, they make the same 'squeaky toy' noises when I bring additional food, so I guess it's any sort of 'personal space' issue! This is why chicks are addictive, once you've witnessed that miracle, you can't stop wanting more. All the very best from sunny Normandie, Sue xx

Hi, I found you through your injured pigeon video and was wondering if the tea tree oil/lavender could be used on their eyes. I found one with injured eye and beak. Thanks for your time.

Hi there, No I would never use essential oils on the eyes or beak but essential oil if used diluted with a carrier oil and patted into an adjoining area such as, say the skin of the neck, will get into the blood stream and do its work. I would just use one drop of each of Tea Tree and Lavender mixed into one half teaspoon of melted raw organic coconut oil. Other than transdermally, you can also use a inhalation of essential oil with hot water and let the pigeon inhale the steam, like the skin, the lungs are a great way to administer EOs. Mix a couple of drops each of tea tree and lavender in a bowl and then pour boiling mineral/bottled water onto them. The pigeon doesn't have to be held right over the steam but in the general vicinity. I have an old video and an article on steam inhalations for birds here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5t40Jaxm6S4mc4.html This one illustrates how to carry out the inhalation for a respiratory problem but the process is the same. Sometimes with pigeons their eyes or even just one eye will remain closed as a way of the body responding to the stress of an attack. If the eye is sealed up or damaged in any way however, I usually put a warm water compress on the eye just to aid it to reopen and clean it. There are also herbs that can be used in a compress for the eyes but in the main clean warm water is as good. I also use organic cotton makeup pads for the compress because of the excessive pesticide use on cotton crops. Hope this helps and give your pigeon a big hug from me and let me know how things progress. All the very best, Sue xx
