NOTE: This review was recorded over a month ago, immediately coming out of the theater. Since then, The Color Purple has not done incredibly well in the awards race. BUT I still have it in my Best Picture lineup and think it could still win Best Ensemble at SAG. What awards prospects do you see for The Color Purple? 🙂

Ryan, do you still think Danielle Brooks will win an oscar?

@@user-xs8ji7ej6u I know Da'Vine Joy Randolph has been winning most of the critics prizes, but come guilds and award shows, I think Brooks will start popping up. So yeah, I still think she’s the frontrunner. 🙂

@@RyanCasselman Depends what social narrative takes hold for this year. Last year is was a trifecta of comeback, overdue & career. It won't be necessarily be based on most deserving. When has it ever, really.

If you haven't seen it, please go buy your tickets 🎟.....I knew when they said these two women were playing these characters on film they were going to be spectacular at their roles simply, becsuse they got to play their characters night in, night out on Broadway..... It's kind of like the difference between watching an all-star team play & a team that has gotten a chance to build chemistry, understanding, and respect for each others abilities.

This is the movie I’m most pumped for to see this awards season. It doesn’t come out for another month in Australia, which is annoying, but it’s nice to hear that the movie is solid.

So happy to see this review. It really is such a great movie. I would disagree about Shug and Celie's relationship. They definitely touched and showed more of that lesbian connection than the original film. Especially their number and the aftermath of that scene.

Yes I agree with you here! I keep wondering why people feel that relationship wasn’t explored further in this film. I think they are only focused on the sexual relationship but this shows so many more layers.

@@antonyware I completely see what you mean by this. I think that's exactly what happened to me. I got a little hung up comparing it to the book that goes into more detail in a physical/sexual context. But I agree, the love in the relationship in this newer version feels deeper.

I disagree with you about Celie and Sophia’s relationship in this film vs the 85 film. I thought it was more tender and loving. But I definitely think it could have push the boundaries a bit more. But otherwise, I think this depiction of their relationship is loving and caring.

You're so right. I completely see what you mean by this. It definitely feels more loving and tender, and the love feels deeper in this new version. I guess what was throwing me off originally was the fact that the book goes into more detail in a physical/sexual context.

I sort of get what y'all are saying about Celie getting lost in beginning of the musical, but it was similar to 1985 movie adaption. Celie supposed to not have any confidence. Also, getting raped by your stepdad did not help. I also it's a way to introduce other characters.

Yeah, that's how I saw it, I completely agree. The character is definitely more subdued initially and then she grows into her power throughout her journey.

8:55 when it's literally apart of your culture there is no need. We already believe; the director just needed to spark the imagination.

I wouldn't consider it clear straight-washing by any means, but it does feel still pretty ambiguous. I recall Spielberg getting criticism from shying away specifically from the sexual content in the book between Thug and Celie, and reducing it to a kiss. And I don't think this adaptation goes much further.

fantasia has a high probably not getting in. best actress is stacked, gladstone, stone, mulligan, robbie, huller, lee. they are ranked above her. fantasia is somewhere in 7th and 8th place.

It would be shocking if she didn't. There's also a demand to redeem what should have been a win for whoppi in the role of Celie. That was stolen from her. So they may try and redeem that through the fantasia win.

Best Oscars 4 what?? Definitely a nomination cause now its mandatory that each category has to have POC nominee. How many movies were made?? Lots of them...If this was ORIGINAL then it would sweep the floor...its a reboot...Lady Gaga won 4 best original song for "A Star is Born" and thats what might happen to this film too...that and Best Soundtrack, Score, and Best Actor nomination but only Fantasia might win just like Lady Gaga for the song...
