For breaching the Black Eagle has all the advantages, plus as you said you can modify the edge profile to do better other tasks as cutting. But you won't modify the C.S. to be more breaching capable, or more thicker. A Black.E. is already on the limits of weight for a tomahawk. For doing knife jobs I believe the smaller tomahawk head the better, but don't have both to compare. There is another thing, I never was an expert in the use of axes, so when I start using a tomahawk I use it in a different way and a smaller bit has to me all the advantages. IMO consider the Estwing as a blanket able to adapt to your necessity, and it corresponds with some historical american tomahawks from the colonial era, from wich derived this pattern as the Vietnam Hawk and the SOG. Then the Estw. idea is to produce a strong practical tool, while the CS does too but with more concern about marketing. There is a video I seen time ago where a youtuber modified the Black Eagle and did the spike as a hammer and the edge more like a convex edge and improved a lot. But I still believe the spike has many more uses than the hammer.

All of the reviews I see do wood cutting task but modern tomahawks are more commonly used in military applications as a breaching tool. I want a review where they use the spikes to break padlocks (twist the lock don’t smack it) and concrete etc. use the blade for chopping things like heavy gauge wire, cable etc. Never in my military career did I chop wood. I did however break locks and concrete and cut cable. For those applications the estwing wins hands down. The cs might break a lock or two but it’s only a matter of time before you snap those bolts.

Entertaining. But anything that is thrown a lot will eventually break. Some good cordage and a strong branch will fix the War Hawk. That other thing is only good if that is all you have. Up front and honest, I have zero experience in tomahawk. I do have years of experience in construction. Estwing is my go to hammer. I have and use 16, 20, 22, 24 ,and 26 oz hammers. The only hammer I have found that holds up on the construction site day in, day out. I'm surprised by the results. Usually, when Estwing puts their name on something, it's good. Ie hatchet, camp axe that I own are at least on par to other brands I own. I throw darts almost every day. I have the exact same dart in 2 different weights. I find if I'm fresh, the 21 gram version does it for me. Towards the end of the work week, the 25gram get me there. Is there any correlation to arm strength and speed? Asking for a friend. Lol!

You can make a steel handle for the CS. You need 3 steel plates. One plate is for the handle, the other 2 plates are shorter and are used to fix he head with the handle. You should wield the handle with the head, than drill 2 holes in the shorter plates and one hole in the handle. Fix the handle and the head with 2 plates using the bolts and wield all plates together. Wield carefully near the head to not overheat the head. But I think a partial wielding will be strong enough too. Than wrap the handle with paracord or use g10 , wood etc for the handle pads

Also if you are a wood worker, you could make your own handle for the War Hawk, maybe even a longer one, or a shorter one. But non the less weapons first, tools second. @@411Outdoors And there is no reason why you could not make a handle for the War Hawk. Might be a bit of a challenge to make that slot, but I think its doable. Have fun. • @insanogeddon

Have some time down with both. Even out of the box the Estwing damages targets fine, if not more than other hawks, but doesn't stick which is an advantage unless you want to loose your tool. As for the cut test 2 hands vs 1 handed is hardly fair but even so the edge on the Estwing lasts forever and does the job and I am yet to find another tomahawk that lasts that isn't near 1/2 a grand and some pain to field sharpen 'super steel'. The Cold Steel hawks spike breaks on mud bricks and sandstone where the Estwing keeps goin like a champ. Smaller edges sharpen easiest in the outback as large flat surfaces are rare. Estwing has made it into the theatre with this one.

I have a 13 inch tomahawk Rosewood handle with a custom engraved head, and just a beat up I bought the war hawk from cold steel, do you know the first thing I did. I marked 3 inches down from the top bolt at that point I wrapped the 550 power cord about 6 inches worth going over the bottom bolt. And then I took a paintbrush and bathed it in two-part Apoxsee right over the 550 power cord, I just laid it on thick it’s almost smooth you can hardly feel the 550. Reason I did that Is because I seen too many videos where they break at that bottom bolt so I got the best of both worlds it’s just as strong as a full tank and I have my custom tomahawk just to look good ,good luck friend.

Morning buddy. My take away from this is, your appreciation of you simple estwing hatchet is justified. I wouldn't touch the cold steel simply because of the handle. A cross pin through the handle and blade is the primary stress point and not a particular indestructible one. As a camp tool, the estwing suffers, 31 chops to do a task that could be done with one stomp of your boot, holding my nose in disgust 😉. If you had to bug out in a hurry, the hatchet is the obvious choice. Even in a SHTF scenerio, you're will be chopping more firewood than bad guys. Plus you don't seem to have any trouble throwing it. Lastly, a spike traditionally, at least with European axes was for punching through heavy plate armor. Not exactly a concern today. The flat face of the hatchet as a hammer is much more useful on a daily basis.
