One thing that wasn't mentioned is weight distribution. The Warhawk has all the weight in the head itself, which makes it less manueverable when swinging but it also gives leverage to your strength, that's why it strikes so hard. It also causes it to spin a lot easier and with less effort when throwing. Full tang tomahawks are great for durability, but it always comes with trade offs :)

Yeah designing proper balance in full tangs is important for power and sticking when throwing. Your absolutely right about it being easier to throw a head weighted hawk. I was thinking how I could add a heavy short bolt and washer and nut through the bit of my Ned Foss Multifunctional Pack Hatchet, which is full tang, only 10.1 inches long and 14.1 ounces. Its fun to throw, and can carry it EDC which I do. Would be a lot more fun to throw if I had more success sticking it. It's actually a really great lightweight spike hawk multitool. Good for carving and fast for fighting.

Excellent video, been training with two trainer trench hawk, smashing up punk logs, (lots of fun but broke the spikes in both). AS a non lethal, baton or Kali stick type of dual weild type of weapon they are absolutely great fun and powerful as well as safe and I imagine less likely to get you arrested! As a dual wield you really feel the benefit of the off hand parry/ block/hook and the main hand strike.

The handle construction of the war hawk prevents it from being able split unfortunately because if it buries too deep it will impact the target. This is a major issue for breaching since ultimately it will brake upon too many hits too the handle. For that reason mine has been retired to a fun thrower.

Okay I stopped the video about Midway and as usual your observations are logical and honest as you compare these two tomahawks, but like machetes these days we have many hybrids and variations that you can find thicker or thinner blades and various grinds. To me most notably is the fact that they are making accident tomahawks that are really thin which to me don't seem but that's me thinking of older tools and weapons that maybe had to be thicker to be durable. Any other thing that I think about it is the fact that now we see machetes and tomahawks and other implements as both weapons and tools so some are both and some lean one way or the other

  • @DDDYLN

Here's my take. I use a camp axes for chopping wood. I'm not really an axe or tomahawk thrower. From my point of view, a tomahawk should first and foremost, be a self defense weapon. From what I've seen, the Recon "Demko" Hawk is a better self defense weapon. It might be good to have by your bed, if you can't get to your firearm fast enough. The War Hawk is more of a chopping hawk, and will do more damage if you manage to hit an attacker. If you want a self defense tomahawk that you can take camping, choose the War Hawk. If you want a tomahawk purely for defensive purposes, i would go with the Recon Hawk. I would like to see the Trench Hawk compared to these two.

Thank you for the detail of these two tomahawks. I am a fan of Cold Steel so this is such a close battle. The handle replacement on the Warhawk is a concern for me. I own the Recon Hawk and like the build quality blade shape. I don’t own the Warhawk but I would have to say I would still lean toward the Cold Steel Recon Hawk, based on weight, full tang and speed of this hawk.

It's not exactly hard to make a replacement handle for a trench/warhawk yourself, but currently the replacement handles are available on cold steel's main website. They're cheap so get like four and you're all set. I also recommend checking the bolts if they are thight everytime you're done using the hawk, if the head wobbles in the handle, the handle itself will get much more shock from impact when throwing. They're amazing axes for going into the woods or for bushcrafting, when you want to save weight. You cannot baton or split with them, but you always carry a knife with you into the woods anyway so get a thicker knife and baton with that... it'll still weigh a lot less than if you carried a hatchet.

Worth mentioning these aren't actually tomahawks. They're boarding axe heads. Tomahawks were for wood and game, almost never combat until the colonists used them as a last ditch weapon. They were never thrown in combat. Boarding axes were fire rescue and rigging tools that were also used in naval warfare but again never thrown.

All partial tangs are crap. Waste of money. Hundred percent handle's break within days if throwing them. The wood handled traditional tomahawks are a handle hassle as well. I've tried various ways to protect and strengthen handles, secure the bit, yet nothing has worked long enough. I will never purchase a partial tang again, or a traditional tapered hickory handle tomahawk again. Good wall hangers for one or two handed emergency home defense. I wont purchase anymore though, because now I collection of actually usable full tang tomahawk hatchets. Got Ned Foss Multifunctional Pack Hatchet which I EDC and throw and carve with. Modified the stock leather sheath to wear as a quick draw belt dangler. I got a CRKT Jenny Wren, which is a blast to throw from various ranges, and now Ive ordered a Browning Shock N Awe, which is on the way. My Cold Steel Spike Hawk and CRKT Woods Chogan especially, are fun to throw because weight, and the Chogan makes a powerfully useful camp axe as well, but they break handles, come loose constantly, and are lond and heavy to handle. The bits are thick for bushcrafting tender feather sticks or carving. I'm done with all but the full tang's now. I only purchase them if they're designed and implemented well, along with a usable sheath. The importance of a quality and usable sheath for each tomahawk, hatchet, or fixed knife cannot be over estimated. They ain't no good if you cant carry and easily quickly draw and use them. Helps if they're easy to resheath as well. At least the partial tang's are usable new. The tapered hickory handled hawks are never even close to fit, and sheath's must be ordered separately. It's no brainer, fixed tang only. I want longer heavier one than my Browning SNA, Ill purchase a Browning Shock N Awesome, and or a CRKT Kangee, both full tang, both awesome design's and powerfully useful.
