THE CLUES YOU MISSED IN SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
Фильм және анимация
On this Memorial Day no fewer than 100 trillion TVs will be playing Saving Private Ryan across America, a film I've seen about 100 times now. But one thing that struck me the last time I saw Saving Private Ryan was each death in the squad was foreshadowed. It's a little piece of trivia that gave me a fresh new perspective on Saving Private Ryan and hopefully it will for you as well.
Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American epic war film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat. Set in 1944 in France during World War II, it follows a group of soldiers, led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), on their mission to locate Private James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) and bring him home safely after his three brothers are killed in action. The cast also includes Edward Burns, Tom Sizemore, Barry Pepper, Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Adam Goldberg, and Jeremy Davies.

Don’t give your money to this guy. He’s bald and smells.
Actually the soldier that stabs Mellish is not the same one that they spared at the machine gun nest. The machine gun next guy 'Steamboat willie' is only seen later shooting miller, and is shot by Upham. This is a big misconception and I used to think it was the same person too, so no flack on you. If you go back and actually compare the clips they are definitely different people.

@@BIBuildy Yes, you can look at the wiki and other sources online. They have slightly different uniforms and have different accents (and obviously different actors). I would say it is the films fault for this misconception, as the soldier that kills Mellish loses his helmet. The next scene that we see 'Steamboat Willie' he is still missing his helmet (from the machine gun nest battle earlier in the film), so it makes them easy to mistake as one person.

Than how did he know who Upham?
Fun fact...you are absolutely right that Miller's decision to attack the machine gun was a bad one...but it was also almost surely an ILLEGAL decision as well, at least under Military Law. That is because Miller was on a special mission assigned to him by the Commander of the entire effing US Army to find Ryan and bring him back...and part of standard procedure for a special mission like that is that Miller would have been specifically ordered to avoid anything that might get in the way of his mission, if it was possible for him to avoid it. So if Miller had survived, and Ryan had not, Miller would have been court martialed for disobeying his orders. Personally, I have always chalked it up to the fact that Miller was breaking down due to his extreme combat stress and PTSD, and was just not thinking clearly at that point. But really, it is just that Spielberg either did not know about special missions and the orders to avoid obstacles, or he knew and just did not give a crap about that since he wanted to tell the story he wanted to tell. Also, if you look at 7:40 in this video, you can clearly see that the thing that Melish gets stabbed with has a mounting ring on the guard...and that makes it 100 percent a bayonet and not the Bitchler youth knife that Melish got in the beginning. 👍

I chalk up Miller decision to attack the machine gun nest to being over stressed and no longer making sound decisions. A momentary lapse of judgement. As for the knife Melish get acquainted with, I see that now. The foreshadow of him receiving the Moustache Youth's knife still works IMO

when you're denying an area as a sniper you need that highspot so you can maximize the area you can cover. But if you're moving through an area you only need to counter sniper fire. That's the reason he was on the ground until the end battle, in the end they had to hold that spot, so he climbed the tower

Just an FYI, Mellish was killed with his own Bayonet by the SS soldier attacking him. Second, the soldier that killed Mellish is not the same one Captain Miller let go. The soldier let go was Heer Army Infantry, while the soldier that killed Mellish was SS. Two different soldiers.

The mission of saving Private Ryan gives the wrong impression, that the US Rangers captain commands less than 10 men. In reality, Miller must be in charge of a company, meaning usually 100-150, or even 200 men. He is clearly a combat veteran, so it is normal, that he lost almost 100 men for the entire war.
@CopaExMachina

@@CopaExMachina While the company "C" of the 2nd Battalion, 75th Regiment of the US Army Rangers is fictional, similar units exists, some of which lost up to 70% of their soldiers in a single battle that was mentioned in the movie - Anzio. US Rangers were among the elite forces deployed in some of the most brutal engagements of the war, so even 70% losses were seen as acceptable if the objectives were reached. So, captain Miller was not a bad commander, because he lost 94 soldiers under his command.
@iKvetch558

There actually was a real Company C of the 2nd Rangers...led by Captain Ralph Goranson...their mission was to land in Charlie Sector to the west of everyone at Omaha and take Pointe du la Percee at the far west flank of the beach. Also, the Ranger Company in WW2 was MUCH smaller than a regular line infantry company...which is why each Ranger Battalion had 6 companies instead of the normal infantry battalion's 3 companies. Each Ranger Company had only 2 platoons, for a total of 3 officers and 63 enlisted men...so a total strength of only 66 as compared to the regular infantry company with 193 total officers and enlisted. This definitely seems to be something Spielberg did not care about later on when he had Miller say that he lost 35 men killed and another 70 wounded in that later attack on those 88s. I refuse to believe that Spielberg was not aware that was ridiculous for a Ranger Company, so he just had Miller in command of more men than just his own for that attack, or something like that.
I knew about the knife, and my father told me about Caparzo standing next to Miller, but I didn't know about the rest of the buttsex. Good video, Cope Dawg.
