Perpetual Testing #204
“The “Clean” Testing”
By R3ybunny
Portal 2
00:00 Intro. / Chamber 01.
21:25 Chamber 02.
25:28 Chamber 03.
31:53 Chamber 04.
50:45 Outro. / Excuses. / Gibberish.
Four Community test chambers with a rather dazzling white panelled aesthetic,
(that is unless you look too close and see the various stains from previous test subjects).
The first chamber seems to mess with you a little bit, enough to confuse me anyway, but it’s more like just the usual not paying enough attention.
Chamber the second decides to do away with the portal gun and opt for combinations of small spaces and auto portals.
Chamber the third goes a similar way and throws in some high energy pellets, before eventually giving you your gun back.
Chamber the fourth takes a big leap up in puzzle design for some well timed, if not wholly unreliable cube flinging.
Out of four chambers, I successfully manage to completely trap and screw myself three separate times, suggesting that with any given task, there is a 75% chance of failure on my end.
Thank you for joining me as I test my way through the infinite number of community test chambers, custom made testing scenarios, mods, and player made maps available for Portal and Portal 2 through the Steam Workshop.
All thanks to Cave Johnson and his Perpetual Testing Initiative.

    49:36 was actually an over complication of the actual solution, however I think it infact made it even better and more clever. The intended just appears to be a cube swap and that's it because you can walk one cube to the exit area. The first 3 maps kinda felt like just steps on a to do list to finish, but the 4th map felt like it had an idea that it was trying to use, even if it was setup to be rather inconsistent. I think if it made it more use friendly and enforced your solution, it could be a genuinely good map.

  • @ngeruma

    Now you've pointed it out, that solution is far far simpler, and yeah mine totally over complicated it, but i'd agree made for a nicer portal style solution to a problem. I find it bizarre that i actually accidentally miss-solved a map in a more complicated and more clever way though! lol Thanks for watching and for commenting dude!

    @ngeruma Your solution was clever. I got multiple solutions for the last part. I don't wanted to keep it to one solution. I love the creativness from the player and love to see how everyone got different ways to solve it :)

    Thanks for playing my maps. I like to hear your feedback and see people solving my puzzles. The "Clean Testing" Series was my first ever try to make multiple Chambers in a row. Im not really happy with them. The only favorite i got is the last and the 2. one. I would love to build with the Hammer Editor but i dont got much time to set him up and read/watch tutorials for it. I will watch forward to your videos

    Hey R3ybunny, sorry for such a late reply and thank you for sending the maps, the fourth one was definitely my favourite from this series, getting the final moves right was really satisfying to pull off once i realised how much setup was actually needed to get there. I know what you mean about hammer, it's a very steep learning curve that takes a lot of time, i find it very difficult myself. I don't know if you have heard of the Portal 2 Community Edition? it's said to be released soon and it has been made pretty much from the ground up by portal modders for portal modders, it looks like it's going to offer an awful lot more options to map makers and a better puzzle builder type of map maker. Thanks again for send the maps and for watching and commenting, i really appreciate your support!

    Interesting mix of puzzles and designs.The first one seemed the trickiest and the last the most interesting. Too bad the last one seemed so prone to trouble. I, myself, have tired many times in my builds to get cubes to fling onto buttons and it almost never works right without the aid of excursion funnels or physical funnels made in hammer to make sure they land where you need them.

  • @ngeruma

    @ngeruma

    2 жыл бұрын

    Part one i think was kind of tricky mainly because i don't pay enough attention, it took me for ever to notice that landing panel was moving because of something i was doing, and i agree part for was the most interesting puzzle design in these. The cube fling in part 4 was actually really strange, i tried it out a few times off camera afterwards and it seems like any respawning completely breaks that fling, not matter what i tried it just wouldn't work. so I'm thinking it has to be one of those deep rooted portal "quirks" that have never been patched out. As always, thank you for watching :)

  • @savasyn

    @savasyn

    2 жыл бұрын

    Possibly it's that the cube droppers add a touch of randomness to the cube's direction as they exit, which gets magnified over long distances. You don't have that problem once you've launched the cube vertically out of a portal and the invisible funneling takes over and keeps it all straight. That's my guess anyway.

    Do the bullet marks fade away eventually? As far as I'm aware the only thing that can get rid of them is there already being too many bullets marks

  • @ngeruma

    @ngeruma

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think this is one of those things that often depends on the map, and or course however the source engine feels like acting sometimes, i've seen maps where no bullet holes are made at all, some that fade when your not looking, and even a map where the bullet marks remained even after respawning and everything had reset lol

    Please keep your eyes away from the test chamber door jank, do not look directly at the bugs! I don't think i'd ever heard that first GLaDOS line, people must be using some unused or deleted ones, which is interesting. I'm not a huge fan of a horde of antlions* with lots of confusing signage, usually bigger puzzle rooms with better object placements take care of that, and the editor is just terrible at handling those anyways.

  • @ngeruma

    @ngeruma

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yean the antlions* in this one were kind of all over the place and a bit miss leading, the built in puzzle maker just seems to stick them wherever instead of making them line up nicely. As always, thanks dude!

    I've always found that such a weird way to open a sentence, if you wanted to randomly criticise someone on the internet you should just go for it, no need to preface it with the whole "not to be mean" thing. After all, what else is the anonymity of the internet good for? Got to give you credit though, most people who make a point of telling strangers they have autism, are usually using it to suggest a greater ability at something, or as a way to excuse themselves of something. Instead you went with a self deprecating backhander. Kudos!
