Lyrics
Now every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world
And ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl
Love 'n' hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands
Hands that slap his kids around 'cause they don't understand how
Death or glory becomes just another story
Death or glory becomes just another story
'N' every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock 'n' roll
Grabs the mike to tell us he'll die before he's sold
But I believe in this and it's been tested by research
He who fucks nuns will later join the church
Death or glory becomes just another story
Death or glory becomes just another story
Fear in the down sex
They say lie low
You say okay
Don't wanna play a show
No other thinking
Was it death or glory now
Playing the blues of kings
Sure looks better now
Death or glory just another story
Death or glory just another story
From every dingy basement on every dingy street
Every dragging hand clap over every dragging beat
That's just the beat of time the beat that must go on
If you've been trying for years we already heard your song
Death or glory becomes just another story
Death or glory just another story
Gotta launch long way
Fight a long time
Get to travel over mountains
Got to travel over seas
We gonna fight your brother
We gonna fight til you loose
We gonna raise trouble
We gonna raise hell
We gonna fight your brother
Raise hell
Death or glory becomes just another story
Death or glory becomes just another story
Death or glory just another story
Death or glory becomes just another story

so agree with this. If you ask me, his offbeats on the intro set the energy for the entire song. The way they continue throughout is pure brilliance
My stock line was always that The Clash could never do anything but make you feel good. Now I'm getting older (mid 50s) I've got to revise that opinion: listening to this tonight has only evoked melancholy for my youth and the era in which this glorious album appeared in the record racks. As Strummer says though, "It's just the beat of time and the beat that must go on". It happens to us all in the end....... If we're lucky!

You put how I feel at 53 so perfectly. It's a bit of a cliche, but wasn't that a fucking great time to be alive? So many memories just rush in and it's both magic and sad. Sometimes I get angry that it wasn't a bigger deal when he died (well, perhaps to us). I get that wouldn't have really accomplished anything in the long run, but it felt like he never got his due.

49 signing in here. I got into the Sex Pistols along with Slayer and Metallica. But since Johnny Rotten said they were supposedly poseurs--I avoided them till 1999. Got the US version of the debut album. Having already dug The Pixies, Pavement--having grown up a The Beatles fan in the early '80s...I was completely BLOWN AWAY by the debut at 26yrs old. (Bought it for $2 at a used CD/tape/record store). "London Calling" was even better. That crazy triple-record "Sandinista" was creative musical/rock-n-roll history. (Maybe their best! Rock NEEDED these guys as we were moving from the 70s to the 80s)

I moved to Chicago three months later. How were the acoustics at the Aragon Ballroom? It would have been my favorite venue of all time, except I couldn't hear anybody there. I stumbled upon a book in which my late father-in-law, a jazz and classical tuba player, said the acoustics at the Aragon Ballroom were bad in the late 1940s and old-timers told him they were also bad in the late 1920s.

1st heard this track used in the Jackass TV series when i was a kid... like many clash tracks i heard over time, it wasn't til i got a little older i gave them a listen and been one of my favourites ever since.
My friend recommended a bunch of their songs and I became a fan was a teen. This song specific even spired one of my story writings
From London Calling, the first Clash album I bought, must be 1980. My friend had the first album from 1977 which was groundbreaking as well. LC was double album stuffed in single sleeve, cover evokes early Elvis Presley album cover. The Clash evolved so quickly, so many musical genres on one record. Its kind of like an encyclopedia of rock music similar to Beatles 'white album', Exile on Main Steet or Blonde on Blonde My favorite song varies with each listen. Strongly recommended!

Best punk song ever, seconded only by Complete Control also by The Clash IMO. From the 2:40 minute mark it goes from a 10/10 song to an epic punk gift to the world. The only band that matters ladies and gents.
@peterowen9183
2 жыл бұрын
Spot-on. 2:40 in this track is the sound of a band who are so completely on top of it that they realise they can do anything. One of those moments when pop music takes you to a different place. In terms of bands who actually 'matter', I'll throw in The Beatles, The Velvet Underground and probably The Stone Roses. But The Clash will still top the list, every time.

Not the best punk song ever. You think it's better than anything the Stooges ever released? No Fun, 1970, Fun House? Apples and oranges I suppose, and the appeal of the Stooges is mostly in their performance, but I just don't this is essential enough to be the best punk song. Better than anything the Ramones ever made? Better than anything from Joy Division? Idk about that..
@Sinnerboy88
Жыл бұрын
@@Bandstand I kinda know what you mean there. Growing up as a kid I always heard of the Clash as sort of the holy grail of punk bands. Then I got London Calling and it didn't seem very punk to me at all.. I was like "this isn't the punk I know". I was most used to listening to bands like Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers and so on. SLF is my favourite punk band of all time. But when it comes to the Clash. I really only call their first album punk.. or at least what punk is to me. Even on the second album there are hints of what is to come and a softening of their sound. But on London Calling, it's cranked up to eleven, it's clear they were exploring and experimenting with many, many musical genres.. I hear everything from ska, rockabilly, r&b, pop, jazz, hard rock on tracks on London Calling.. sure, there's some punk DNA in there too but it's really a very diverse, mixup of an album.. even from song to song. I don't mean in any way that in a bad way.. don't get me wrong. It's a great album, just not what I'd call punk. Genre wise, I'm not sure what I'd brand it.. post punk/new wave maybe. It's just London Calling.. it's maybe beyond labels.
Takes me back 20 years to that long good summer
