The Christian's Complete Guide to BIBLICAL Meditation || (How to Meditate as a Christian)

As Christians, is it biblical for us to meditate? The answer is yes, but there is a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it. In this video, I talk about how to meditate on God’s Word as a Christian, as well as things to avoid so we don’t fall into the trap of “Christian meditation” that borrows from Eastern religions and new age practices. Hope it blesses you!

    Eastern meditation always felt very unnatural to me. It’s crazy that listening to my soft worship music in the morning and just putting my full focus on God has given me the stillness and peace I could never find with eastern meditation. With meditation, you have to have a single point to focus on and if that single point is nothingness, you will just get emptiness and nothingness. Well, what do you think is going to fill you? Be still, and know that I am God. We are meant to fill our minds with God. If your eye be single, your body will be filled with light. Doesn’t mean open your Third Eye means put your entire focus on God and you will be filled with light. When I was in the new age, I also was never able to be in the present moment, no matter how hard I tried and now it’s just a natural consequence of Christianity, because I’m no longer chasing after this fake carrot of enlightenment. I have found peace and stillness. I was never able to find with eastern meditation. It is similar bc gods presence is experienced in rest and focusing on him, not your own thoughts and worries. But it’s not the same as focusing on nothingness. God did not design our minds to do this.

    There are indeed teachings of "Christian meditation" that borrow from eastern religions. Those are unbiblical teachings, but the Bible still talks about meditating on the Word of God, so the distinction is necessary. There is definitely such a thing as biblical meditation that has nothing to do with hinduism, etc @@tejbahadurgond2499

    @@JeremiahPMensah False. Meditating on name of the God is also a practice which started in ancient Hinduism. Hinduism then was more of a way of life then and it still is. The religion part is just a subset of it. Anyway, ever heard about chanting "Om" Meditation? Om is considered to be the sound of God and we focus on god. You guys took Meditation, made it complex AF and ruined/appropriated it. I'm an atheist but I meditate. Why? Because Hinduism accepts atheism and so does Meditation and it has tons of benefits. It's just being in the present, be it with the religious God or the universe.

    How I arrived here... Gave my life to Christ 6 months ago, and got baptized. Before that, I used to meditate to relax using the "emptying" type of meditation. I started reading/digesting Psalms. The VERY first piece of the bible I have EVER sat down to study. Psalms 1:2 mentions meditation. I've never heard about biblical meditation before. So, I tried to "meditate" on the word (the way I am used to). But it felt off... THE NEXT DAY, reading Psalms 4 and didn't understand it well, so I looked it up on blueletterbible, and this is what I read "Meditate within your heart: David spoke of the BIBLICAL practice of meditation, not the Eastern practice of meditation..." saying that in biblical meditation WE FILL OUR HEART AND MIND WITH GOD'S WORD. I was shocked, and I was like okay... I have to learn about Biblical meditation and what is correct and incorrect 🤣 so here I am thanks for this video! this is the only/first video i saw covering this topic, kinda surprised it's not talked about more!

    You're the first person who said this in a respectful and delicate way, to where I actually was open-minded to it. Thank you! But, are chakras necessarily evil? I don't believe so, I think they're just energy points throughout our body. I associate them with a lot of my yoga moves, which is a really great stretch and workout routine. If anyone has answers I'd love to hear them! I try to seek God in all I do, especially before I speak or act on anything, so please know that I believe in the Holy Trinity and am actively cultivating a working knowledge by trying to learn as many Biblical scriptures as possible! But I don't have them all memorized yet or even know them all yet, which is why I need help from fellow Christians who are further along in their walk with God :)

  • @JeremiahPMensah

    @JeremiahPMensah

    Hello, thank you for keeping an open mind. If you're a Christian, which it sounds like you are, then the Bible lets us know that we are not a part of the world. It's not really a question of whether something is evil or good. This was the original temptation in the garden: "You shall know good and evil". As believers, we live according to the Spirit, not the knowledge of good and evil. In other words, the Holy Spirit will lead us away from some things that may look harmless. And even if you don't hear it directly from Him, the biblical form of meditation is clearly contrary to the Eastern and New Age forms. So whether chakras are evil or not, that's not really the point. The point is what the Bible tells us about meditation.

    Sure. The goal of Christianity is not self-actualization or self-discovery as is the case with some religions. Christianity is about a relationship with the Creator of the universe. We find everything in Him, even fulfillment. The gospel is not man-centered, it's God-centered, so what we do must reflect that. We meditate on His Word to know Him and understand our identity in Him

    Yes, yoga can be tricky. How much of it is just exercise, and how much of it involves religious/spiritual practices? For some people, it's all a spiritual practice, and for others, it's just stretching. I lean more towards "if it looks like you might be engaging in something religious or spiritual, do a different kind of exercise". Not sure if this helps but that's all I've got for now🙏🏾

    Thanks! I agree it's tricky. I briefly looked up info related to the origins/idea of yoga and the poses are related to both physical and spiritual growth. So I decided to stay away from guided yoga videos because they often say things related to emptying the mind and certain poses. However! The popular/mainstream part of "yoga" is just about stretching + strengthening the body at the same time, so I create my own version using regular stretching and bodyweight exercises :) and during focus on filling my heart and mind with God's word (still a work in progress)! 🙂

  • @JeremiahPMensah

    @JeremiahPMensah

    3 ай бұрын

    A few questions about that: what kind of meditation? If it's the Eastern kind, then the explanation in this video still applies. It's unbiblical. If it's the biblical kind I described, the purpose is to grow in our knowledge and understanding of God's Word. Now I'm not going to say God can't use that to lower your blood pressure (He can do whatever He wants), but that could be more of an additional effect/benefit of being at peace due to meditating on the scriptures. Also, if a lifestyle change is what's needed for a healthier body, that's worth considering as well. Hope this helps

    I understand what you are saying that it says to meditate via pondering what is written in the Bible, but I don't think this is doing very well it actually explaining what to do or how to physically and specifically meditate in this way. I've recently decided to start trying to understand some of this stuff and one of the resources I have been using is the healthy gamer KZread channel. From my current understanding it almost sounds like that if you try to taking these verses on meditation as literally as possible you will end up doing something somewhere to what the Eastern version of different meditations are. If I sit down and say a verse over and over again in my head, in a way you are just seemingly doing a mantra and emptying your mind leaving only those words in it, and if you are focusing just on the presence of God and or the holy Spirit, it's almost like a focus point kind of meditation where you are focusing your awareness in a specific area. If you are using your brain and other ways you're not going to be able to focus in the first place. If you have any extra thoughts or explanations on this I would really appreciate hearing them, thank you.

  • @JeremiahPMensah

    @JeremiahPMensah

    Good question. We all have the innate ability to imagine things. This is something God gave us, and we need it to be creative just as He is the Creator. Nothing wrong with that. The problem arises when we try to access certain supernatural aspects of this by borrowing from New Age practices. We are called to be distinct from the world. We can imagine things we'd like to do or have, but trying to MAKE them happen by way of visualization or the law of attraction is unbiblical. We're much better off making our requests known to God and believing that He has heard us. Hope this helps

What happens IN our body is perfectly designed by Jesus himself, he created that, Chakra’s exist, wether you believe in Jesus or Buddha or a Spaghetti Man, medically speaking you do have energy points in your body, that’s not debatable, but let’s take something less worldly as an example, like medically “The Placebo Effect” your brain is SO POWERFUL that if you believe something SO MUCH, your body will react like it’s happening (btw *believe so much* can be attributed to *Faith*) if you give a 12 year old Grape Juice but tell them it’s alcohol & they whole heartedly with every bone in their being that it is alcohol, their body will physically respond as if it’s drunk…that’s not “unbiblical” because who created the complex illusion of what our mind can do? JESUS! That makes it biblical right? I mean our body is so complexed that if you lose a kidney, another will regrow! Whatever happens WITHIN our body, is biblical, as it was designed by Jesus! Satan cannot touch a DESIGN such as our body’s natural nature Manifestation only works with your BRAIN Visualization only works with your BRAIN Chakra’s only work with your BRAIN without such it doesn’t matter what you do, they don’t work That’s Jesus man, that’s HIS creation, not our own flaws, or “civilized beliefs” “If you have faith as small as a mustard, you can tell that mountain to move & it will move” but you have to do it in JESUS’s name What does that sound like? I have to respectfully disagree. I think both Eastern & Western meditation is good for you if approached correctly. One of the biggest problems with the New Age types of meditation is that they're seeking something egotistical. They're trying to attain psychic powers, or manifest money and material possessions, or to just feel good, etc. They don't need to stop meditating though. They instead need to shift their mindset, from egotistic to altruistic. And meditate when they feel called to do so by God, as opposed to doing it because their ego has a desire it wants to fulfill. One of the things Christians fail to understand is that God is not separate from us but is within all things. God is the ocean, we are a drop IN that ocean, not outside that ocean. God animates us, like a hand to the puppet. This physical body and ego structure is a costume for the soul. When you empty the mind and go within, you are releasing the attachment to the costume, and getting more in touch with the hand that is inside you (God). It is in a sense merging somewhat with the Creator. This is one way how you can get to know God more directly, rather than through reading words and thinking about them. It's direct contact/experience with your Creator, God. It's only when you decide to abuse this ability, to manifest egotistical desires, ignoring God's will in favor of your own, that this type of meditation goes awry. In other words it's a double-edged sword. It's how you use it that counts. Like a knife is a tool, you can either stab someone with it, or prepare a meal for your family with it. It needs to be used wisely and respectfully, in moderation, for the greater good. Unfortunately almost every modern meditator is not using it this way.

    I see a lot of poeple here spreading negativity regarding the eastern meditative tradition amd it's aparent to me they aren't actually familiar with it. To say "secular" meditation such as modern mindfullness based stress reduction is wrong or somehow unholy is really just ignorant. That's like saying doing "secular" exercise is unholy. Yeah, Jesus never gave a talk about the proper lifting technique for a barbell Squat either but that doesn't make it wrong. It's only "wrong" in a Christian sense (and I am a believer in Christ) if you regard the origins of these practices as actually Devine, or you are using them in some ritual way not used for just plain old mental health and well being. There is literally text books on the benefits of Mindfullness meditation at this point denying those benefits is sort of silly. I even know Christian counselors that recommend meditation to better understand our minds and how our thoughts effect our actions. To sit here amd judge something simply because it's alien to you is in my opinion, a large part of why much of this country has turned their back on the Church. I say this as a more conservative leaning individual. I'm not saying everyone should meditate, but please don't judge those who do and say they are going against God in doing so.

    No one is judging. We’re approaching things from a biblical perspective. Equating this to exercise is a false equivalency. Barbell squats are not described in scripture, but meditation is. Cool if you disagree, but don’t misrepresent what we’re actually saying

    @JeremiahPMensah meditation in the bible is just how the word was translated. It's meant in more of a contemplative tone and I 100% agree that poeple should take the time to really ponder God's word. However, to equate Biblicle "meditation" to say mindfulness meditation is in itself a misinterpretation because you are comparing apples to oranges. The only thing they have in common is the word meditation. To say it's wrong could possibly prevent poeple that have illnesses shown to be effectively treated with meditation from doing that practice. I just don't want anyone to interpret it thay way and be discouraged from doing something that could really help there over all well being. You can pray all day but if you abuse this body and eat filth and live in sloth you will live a life of suffering, if you don't take time to see that you aren't your thoughts, they will ruin your mind and potentially your relationship with God. Meditation actually helps me and others feel closer to God.

    I'd like to add I understand your message, you don't want brethren and sisters in the faith to he confused and start branching out seeking spiritual fulfillment from other sources, but I would have just added that there is a distinction to practice meditation for "spiritual" purposes and real medicinal reasons. To avoid it just because it came from another faith is IMO silly. Might as well not use a large chunk of mathematics because it came Islam or all the other amazing things we have today that came from poeple from all sorts of backgrounds.

    Never heard anyone who actually meditates say that meditation is about “emptying” your mind. Anyone who meditates knows the goal of meditation is awareness. To train your brain to be more aware of your thoughts. We do this by focusing on our breath and when we feel ourself thinking, returning our focus back to our breath. Mindfulness is good for Christian’s because it makes us better at recognizing where our thoughts are coming from, God or the enemy. I believe God wants everyone to do mindful meditation because is makes us stronger mentally in the Spirit and more disciplined.

    What?? No.. meditation is simply being aware of whats in and around you. Its not looking for or pondering on the teachings of god. The teachings should come to you while focusing on your senses. Edit: you can ponder on anything and it wont teach you anything about it. You will simply just remember related teachings that you have already read or heard.
