Considering all stock e-kits have crap sounding toms and snares anyway, you're right. Spend less money if possible and buy superior drummer. I'd still say go with the 100 over the 80, but that's really if you want to use a double kick (most people probably don't - it really only appeals to metal drummers).

I think that I've found my little boy's first kit. Thank you for doing this fantastic video, isn't budget gear amazing now? I think back to the marginally attractive logs passed off as budget guitars from the 70's and 80's by dubious named far East companies and look at the likes of Donner, Glarry and Harley Benton nowadays and they're galaxies apart. I remember a friend buying his first P bass back in the late 80's. Can't remember the brand but, we were all green back then. I played it and shredded my fingers on the fret ends, so we taped our fingers 🙈 from there onwards. You could drive a London red bus under the action, too. Bloody horrific old thing it was but we were all so happy to have instruments. Nowadays, these budget kits and guitars are making learning so much better for people who want to learn to play. Fuck I'm old...

  • @jamesarmenti8876

A cheap way to go is to upgrade the drum module itself. Years ago I had a alesis dm6 kit, and found a cheap roland td 10 expanded module. From there I slowly scored a mesh pad every time I had extra cash. A Roland module that supports VH hihats is a good upgrade, as the alesis stuff has poor hihat expression, and it's one of the things that really kills the feel of an E kit. These days I just use a td20x module triggering Superior Drummer 3.

Same here, my alesis mesh has been great for getting into drumming (going on a year and a half or so now, no issues with it). But definitely has a real crappy module with hardly any decent sounds. I’ve tried using plugins through daw’s like ezdrummer, to get access to better sounds, but the latency is unbearable. Idk if my issue is not having an audio interface, but I assume it’s the crappy module and will have latency even with an interface, idk. I can still record from my alesis into a daw as long as I’m listening to the audio from the module and not my pc, and you can record 1 track on the module itself to hear back your practice. For the price it’s served it’s purpose no doubt, but a better module could do wonders.

Try this. Use an expression pedal. Pass the output of the drum module to the input of the expression pedal. I do this with the Yamaha DTXpress IV going into the DigiTech RP90. Then, program in timpani. I tuned mine into two different tonalities (Low to High Bb-Eb-F-Bb and C-F-G-C). Then use the expression pedal to pitch bend and you can get pitch bends similar to what you would get on acoustic timpani. If you go in to the parameters of the settings for each pad/sensor, you can use sounds not normally available. Example: I can use each of pad/sensors to be different notes on a piano and play scales, chords, and some basic piano music.) Electronic percussion can seriously rock if the player knows how to set it up properly and has a really good amp. Thanks for the video. You seemed to have a lot of fun with it.

These kits are so affordable these days! Especially the DED-100 is awesome for the price. I had a Roland kit which was worth 3000,- euro's at least, but this is almost as great!

Love the cheap drum stuff videos! And one thing, i would also love to hear how does it sound outside off headphones (i know its terrible) but people use these in places where they need to be quiet, so how loud is outside of headphones?

Mesh heads are not silent by any means, but they are a damn lot quieter than acoustic drums. If you live in close proximity to neighbours, they likely wouldn't appreciate you playing at midnight, for example. But during the day, outside of the room all you can hear is tapping.

I kinda love the idea of buying one of these Donger sets to augment my big Roland VAD kit with fun splashes and the like. Way, way cheaper than buying Roland cymbals and probably no significant difference in playability for what they'd be used for.

Every once in a while I think about buying a cheap small kit like this and trying to wing it learning online. I also have parrots so if I get bored of it I'm sure they'll love it 😀 Are kits like these portable enough to fold down and stick in a tight space like a closet? If they are portable how long do they normally take to get back into place after you get the hang of it? Edit: oh ya... Sex!

  • @wlouisharris

I had the same concern. You can fold it down pretty easily. You can also disconnect the main bar that connects the 2 stand posts and pack it down even further. One thing I am noticing is to take extra care when connecting and disconnecting the wires. It seems that the wiring unit could get damaged if you don't handle it with care. It's not cheap but you've got 9 components that need to generate sound going into one unit. I'm sure the connection wire harness can be replaced however. I'm trying to check if they make replacement parts but I don't see any on the website. I'll probably email them and see what they do.

I had a drum set about 20 years ago. Had to give it up because I had to move and my ears were becoming too sensitive to loud noises. I've been wanting to get an electronic set for a while and after seeing this set, I might get it. Doesn't look like it takes a lot of room, which is good for a small apartment like mine. Thanks for the review!
