The Changing Nature of Large-Scale Change in Healthcare

What’s changing when it comes to the way healthcare systems are tackling large-scale change management? Helen Bevan, a Strategic Advisor to the NHS on change, joins us with ideas and insights for creating “change-ready organizations” that are capable of dealing with ongoing transformation.
Turns out, the thing that’s changed about change in healthcare organizations is that it is no longer about a singular issue or one type of program - it’s about everything, all the time, and teams need to be trained for ongoing adaptability. “It’s about being in a constant state of inquiry,” Helen explains, pointing out that there are a number of cultural conditions that healthcare leaders are best to focus on to foster the kind of curiosity, experimentation, and trust that are needed to help support such willingness to take risks and try new things. But, remember, she says, as hierarchical as healthcare organizations can be, “the reality is that change starts anywhere.”
So, what’s the "#1 Rule" of being a change-agent? Is change fatigue a real thing? How do you bring along people who are change averse, or fear the unknown? And, knowing that Helen has such reach into healthcare organizations as a consultant, we've got to ask: post-Covid, what are healthcare organizations trying to change THE MOST right now? What is the large scale change du jour??
