An 80s kid, one of my first memories was my dad telling me that Karen had died. Can’t even remember the song, just the rainy day in the sedan as a Carpenters song played. Cannot ever remember such emotion so I always associated her with such a sadness and pain - my dad was her age and I found all her records in his collection. A few years ago I started looking her up on KZread. I am absolutely floored, watching her from 70-74. I think of how my life might have been different had she lived and continued making music. But I am playing her songs for the next generation- she will live on.

Karen Carpenter - as a teenage singing boy soprano I cried my eyes out when you passed away, went outside and with right and left fists punched the brick wall of our home until my knuckles bled, you really just made music lovely. My Dad (98) is trained pitch & tone perfect operatic tenor, even remembered in 2014 at Monte Cassino, Italy, for being a New Zealand soldier at that great battle, but also for travelling on furlough to sing in the Opera Houses in Bari, and Dad regards Maria Callas, Kiri Te Kanawa, Judith Durham, Randy Crawford and your voice among the best of the best Female singers he ever heard, high praise indeed, as he was the first male opera singer in New Zealand to win a scholarship to study in England. Love you Karen always.

Alex: Me, too! I was born in 1971. My brother (10 years older than me) and the Americans who lived upstairs listened to the Carpenters. So I heard their music very early. I love their melodic tunes so much... Richard is really a great arranger, composer and musician. He has an ear for good tunes and instrumentalization. And Karen... she is so unique. No one can ever match Karen's class in vocalizing and drumming. She was excellent. So naturally gifted... simply adorable. I enjoy their music every day. It's timeless. I also love their more upbeat songs, not only the ballads. The Carpenters were, are and will be great forever! I have more cds, dvds and books from the Carpenters than of any other artist.

@Bee Dee A haunting description, since her therapist suggested to her family that if they would hug her and reassure her she was loved, it would go a long way to comfort her. And so, with all the sadness irony sometimes shows us, we find her voice gives us the very comfort she wanted.

I have been following them since the 70’swhat can I say,legend.....

I agree absolutely beautiful in every sense of the word so sad to have lost such a wonderful talent way too soon. ❤
Yes, at the age of 13, one Saturday afternoon in June 1974, It was sunny.I skipped track and field practice and went home. Because I found out that there was a TV broadcast of the Carpenters performance in Japan. For the first time, I trembled when I saw the real moving Carpenters. This is the video at that time. I am trembling again.

What great musicians along with that great voice we will never forget. Hat up to Richards, the drummer and in fact all of them. Simply wonderful.
How unbelievably perfect in every way possible! Never a wrong note!!
Karen Carpenter had the most calming voice of the 60's . She left us way too soon. Anyone that put a dislike to her singing is totally nuts. She and her brother Richard were great to listen to and I am glad i discovered this You tube presentation
