Carpenters at the BBC - 1971
Ойын-сауық
The Carpenters' debut BBC concert, recorded on their first British tour in September 1971. They perform hits including Close to You, Superstar and We've Only Just Begun, together with the odd Beatles' tune and a Bacharach/David medley. Karen's drumming and Richard's keyboards get instrumental support from their five-piece touring band and a 26-piece orchestra conducted by Johnny Pearson.
Also included (which are usually edited out) is the original opening and the song "I Fell In Love With You" which Karen duets with Doug Strawn.

I am a singer. And many times I research singers from the past. And when I heard Karen Carpenter, I fell in love with it, my heart raced. And knowing that she is no longer here is a lot of pain. 😢
No one nowadays can perform live and sound THIS good. Sad
The world lost a beautiful legend the day Karen Carpenter died.
Nobody in 2024 sounds this good live. I'm speechless.

I heard a music critic say that he thinks that one of the possible reasons why so many people have such a visceral response to Karen's singing is that it sounds like a mother singing to her child, it's an interesting theory, who knows? I guess the sad irony of that is that she never had any of her own children to sing to.
Her voice was astonishingly beautiful.
Unbelievable talent. I've just been watching young Dionne Warwick sing and the purity of voice in both of them is astonishing.

She truly brings back the Sonshine of Yesterday !
I first heard Karen on the radio around 1970. I had never heard a voice like that! I was a radio junkie, listened all day & night and was mesmerized by her. It was sometime in 1972 I was in high school that I first saw her picture. I was shocked that she did look not like an angel. She actually was plain but I was and always will be madly in love with her voice. I saw the Carpenters in concert in 1974. It was FABULOUS!!! When she died I locked myself in my apartment played all her records and cried for 3 days. This concert is one of the best live performance I've ever seen of her she looks healthy, she looks happy and she truly is having fun.

I was kid back then hearing songs, just think songs were recorded on analog tape from 1950-80s, there was no digital recording till 1980s were voices could be altered. David Bowie (would know inside mucic industry) said 90% artist voices were altered, like "Adele" never sound same in concert. She was blessed with natural talent to sing. Would like met her and take her fir supper, well was just 8 yr old kid then.

In 2023 even, I'm sad to learn she's gone (I learned about the Carpenters this year but swore I've heard them before)
Proof that angels exist.
After 50 years listening to the Carpenters songs, they still gives me a lot of positive energy and strength to keep on going❤
How could anybody not fall in love with Karen? Such a joy to watch, and the voice! 100% pure.

i wish she would have found someone to be in love with. i think that's all she needed. i could be wrong. but if i'm right, maybe she wouldn't have succumbed into what became of her. whenever i hear her vocals i can't help but get a little misty.

Yes we all know that all families are deeply happy and harmonious and that love between man and woman lasts forever. Or is this just a sentimental and completely unrealistic notion? Or should she rather have had the necessary therapeutic and spiritual help to deal with her 'demons'?

This year completed 40 years since the world lost the greatest singer with a voice and the most refined and tuned timbre that I've known on planet earth, I haven't seen a tribute to this singer Who, in addition to singing, was a person of integrity, true and delighted with her simple way of living
There isn't anything to analyze or explain; perfection in the arrangements and in the vocals. They had pure talent.
Around 2020, I drove by their childhood home in New Haven. I miss Karen Carpenter’s voice so much! There’s so many songs she could have recorded.
Every time I hear Karen Carpenter's voice, I just shake my head. Simply gorgeous. A natural, unforced mezzo, as clear as a bell. There are plenty of hugely successful "singers" who don't even belong in the same room as Karen. Such a shame that she died so young, but so grateful that we have recordings so that we can still enjoy her talents.

she was going to a concert with her friend along with her. Her friend reported that Karen was singing in the back of the car at a very low level and this is the same level she sang. There was some sort of magic between Karen's voice and the microphone.
Literally the most talented "pop" artist of all time. Perfect pitch, amazing drummer and most don't realize her Brother is literally the most amazing keyboardist of all time.

They should have allowed her to continue to sing while playing the drums. Playing the drums was her passion. She never wanted to be front and center singing without her drums. Look how much happier she was-Even her voice was “happier”! They caused her anorexia and bulemia, which ultimately caused her death.

@@jwade848 The song at 16:59 is actually live and you can see and hear her technique there.
Karen’s voice, no ProTools Audio and Auto Tune! She mastered her Hi-Hats, which defines a great Drummer!
Karen's voice live was as great as her recordings! -- the greatest female pop vocalist in history!!! -- Her voice was beautiful, lovely, strong and pure. She was very pretty in her young twenties, there was no need to have lost so much weight, if only she could have truly seen herself for how beautiful she really was! Richard Carpenter was a great pianist/keyboard musician, arranger, and back up vocalist -- he was the driving force behind the Carpenters. I will always remember & cherish the Carpenters!

Yes she was!! They should have left her alone.
Love seeing Karen with a big smile while on the drums. Even after the melancholy big hits, she always say "Thank you" and flashed a big smile. Glad she had some joy and fun :)
When she first came on to the scene I was in high school. I thought her voice was good but it wasn't until decades later that I realized how good it was. I will say it again; Karen's voice gave a song its fullest expression.
40 years later & still makes me so sad 💔. Karen was beyond talented-no other like her-that voice was so smooth& pitch perfect& so very peaceful & her drumming-so underrated. And Richard was brilliant with the arrangements & his musical talents- they complimented each other so well. I still remember where I was when I heard she died-shoveling snow (in Chicago)listening to WXRT on my Walkman-sat in the snow & cried in my driveway for 20minutes. 😢RIP sweet Karen

I would say, although Richard is more than this, but for the Bee Gees- Maurice was head music director plus did high notes. Without Richard we’d never have Karen.
Karen’s voice was that of a seraph-perfect, flawless, superb, exquisite and certainly not earned by humanity.

If they composed and sang music tracks for an Academy Award Oscar nominated or winning movie, then yes. For the music only, then it would be a Grammy Award for music. Truly a shame they never got that recogition.
The entire band is excellent. The arrangements are wonderful and Karen's tone and timbre are hard to match. She should have been singing in the big band era. Anyway she is a goddess and we were fortunate to have her.
This is the voice of the 70s. Karen just amazes.
