The Cabin "Feels" Different Now | Campfire Cooking
Ойын-сауық
🌲Welcome back to our cabin adventures! In this video, Todd and I share our last full day at our cozy retreat after spending a few serene days here. This time, we’re excited to try something different with our new Lodge 5-quart Dutch oven, cooking over an open fire with freshly split oak logs. We whip up a hearty meal of sirloin beef tips simmered in our homemade French onion soup, seasoned with Montreal steak seasoning and minced garlic. However, the day wasn't without its challenges - we had to work around a noisy chainsaw and the threat of rain.
🌲As we navigate these hurdles, I reflect on my recent retirement and how it's transformed our cabin visits. No more Sunday blues or rushing back to a hectic work life. Instead, I savor the peace and freedom to enjoy these moments without pressure. We also discuss our love for the cabin and the joy of finding outdoor activities that we both cherish, from planting trees around our property to simply soaking in nature’s beauty.
🌲Join us as we cook, reminisce, and enjoy the tranquil cabin life. Whether you’re looking for Dutch oven recipe ideas, tips on cooking over a fire, or just some inspiration for a relaxing weekend getaway, we hope you find it here. Thank you for spending your time with us - we truly appreciate your company on these journeys. See you in the next video! ♥

I treated my 1st week of retirement (last week) like a vacation week. I puttered, I napped (!!), I did a few creative things, and kept having to remind myself that there is no hurry to do my chores nor squeeze in my creative time whether I was feeling creative or not. My time is my own. I’m working on a new routine that works for my own rhythm of life, not my meeting calendar. WOOHOO!

That has got to be the most amazing thing ever! I call it 'FREEDOM', or as I say to myself daily, "I want to be free!" I'm not too far away from retirement myself, I want it so bad I can taste it. There is nothing in the world, like not being on someone else's timeclock, or schedule, but my own, not caring about what day it is, or what time it is, for the most part, doing what you want when you want, and not having to ask someone's permission for a day off! ENJOY!

Congratulations, Rachel!! You made it! God Bless You in your retirement from the corporate world!
Another camping tip is to ALWAYS bring potatoes or sweet potatoes with you. Simply wrap them in aluminum foil and toss them into the fire pit. Or naked with your Dutch oven meal. Absolutely delicious the next day. Just needs salt, or butter, or fried up the next day. We've over complicated our cooking back home. What simple things tastes delicious in the woods is amazing. Just instant coffee is godlike! Getting back to the simpler stuff is good.
Use your large Dutch oven like an actual oven. Heat it up and put a smaller dish inside to cook. Makes great bread, cakes, and pot pies. Historic cooking at its best.

Just put some canning rigs in the bottom and set a baking dish on them to bake
There’s no better way to cook than over an open fire in cast iron. Even at our farm. Oh, Rachel, I retired last November. It’s hard to balance. I’ve been enjoying my free time but I get it.
Remember Scarlet O'Hara saying, 'Tomorrow is another day'. Your days are now filled with tomorrows, I retired a long time ago and my tomorrows are..... whatever I want and look forward to doing it. My tomorrow is, I have to plant more French beans, the slugs had a feast on a few. I never have those dreaded Mondays any more. I plan my day in the evening before and I work at a relaxed speed, what doesn't get done will wait until tomorrow... that's another day, there are lots of them 🤗
Such a blessings watching the two of you, at ease and not stressed! Wishing you many more days like this! Loved watching you both!
I just love the sound of rain and the quiet, relaxing feeling when you are that close to nature. Enjoy retired life Rachel. You'll get used to it.
Boy do I ever understand getting crabbier throughout the day on Sunday! Love seeing the joy on your face. I'm older than you but just retired last year and I love it.

should go to church...would make the rest of the day better or have your time with the word....
Ok a tip for the Dutch oven, place some old canning jar rings in bottom of pot, heat the pot and lid separately. Get a terra cotta pot drip tray that fits with an inch or two and let your bread rise on it. Set it on the rings and add the lid, bake until hollow sounding when thunked on top.
Oh I can't wait for retirement! Couple more years
I was told to our a layer of rice in the bottom of your Dutch over below the parchment paper before baking your bread and that will keep it from over cooking in the bottom. My friend uses her baking weights.
Speaking as someone who retired to our cabin in Northern Michigan, we find numerous reasons to smile daily, at the simpler things in life, because we now have the time to notice them. Oh how your eyes will open wider, and your hearing becomes more keen, while your heart fills with joy. 😊😊😊

Great to see you out enjoying the Cabin together & your new channel! Enjoy your summer & all that it holds for you :)
Sassafras tree is the name of the tree that smells like root beer. People dig up their roots and boil them and make sassafras tea, yum!
Well, this was a happy surprise. Love that you've started posting your cabin videos over here. I had no idea this channel existed. So relaxing to watch.

Rachel darling don't feel bad about retirement is bound to happen. Put your full energy in the garden.
I love when you share your cabin times with us because it speaks to my heart also. Used to camp all the time, but not for a few years now - but there is just something about sharing nature with another person, especially someone you love. i recognized those sassafrass trees right away! Did you know that the dead branches make great kindling….even if it has been raining a lot?
Awww how did I miss you had another channel? Love it. Thank you for sharing 💚
Thanks for sharing your cabin trip. Your sirloin tips and bread looked delicious! So, peaceful and relaxing to hear the rain and thunder!! It's so generous of you to take home a white pine for your new farm helper, you two are always thinking of others.
There was a time, about 20 years ago, when my husband and I would have done this. Let’s just say the years have taken a toll on our bodies. Sadly, I now watch you and think about what I used to do.
that,s what i dream off, a cabin in the woods with thunder storms and heavy rain...heaven xx
I’m looking forward to more of this Rachel and Todd channel!
Rachel you look so happy. Congratulations on your retirement.
I totally get how you were feeling when you had to go home because work was tomorrow. My husband retired back in 2021, but I still have at least 4 more years before I can retire. On Thursdays I work remote, and we have Fridays off in the summer because we work longer hours during the week. On Wednesday evening, my demeanor is totally different because I don't have to go into the office.
Nice! The sound of the storm is wonderful!

Funny. I just last week made my first loaf of sourdough bread. It was also dense. But a great flavor. I think it's a matter of getting the starter motivated. I think it's just going to take a little while to get it up to speed.
Love that sound lol
How nice thunderstorms in the woods.

You keep your precious moments all to yourself...so much healthier for you two. I just love watching you together and hearing all the laughter makes my day and makes my heart smile!
the thunder and rain at the end makes this video epic
love the peaceful setting guys,,
I've been retired for 5 years now but watching you reminds me of how it took me several weeks to process the fact that I was not on that schedule that I could just take my time to achieve my personal goals. It has been so wonderful being free.❤
Rachel, I am so happy for your retirement :)
That rain storm was so amazing to listen to. Thanks for sharing!!!
Retirement is good because if you truly don't feel like doing it you don't have to, and if you do get everything done and are bored, there's soooooo many places that need volunteers, such as animal shelters and etc.
Hah omgosh I’m so glad that you mentioned that this is a different channel!! I thought this whole time that i was watching another 1870’s video!! we'll make an announcement on the main channel at some point just so people know. homesteading stuff will stay on 1870s and everything else will end up here at some point.
So glad you are sharing this retirement journey. I feel so rushed too every weekend trying to get so much done outside in the short amount of time before I go back to work, plus I'm a single mom of 20 something kids. I think taking some time off each spring when it's heavy planting and weeding season is something I need to plan for. That is so sweet you're bringing your new farm sitter a white pine!! Your dinner turned out amazing! How cozy to sit on the porch in the rain. Good for you trying to cook your first Sourdough bread on the grill!!! Wow! What an enjoyable video

Love your videos! I retired in December of 22' and have struggled to find a groove. Lots of things have happened in my life since then that have detoured my transition but regardless of the events I have endured since then I have come to terms with the fact that ultimately I have the control to change the things around me to get to my comfort zone. Seeing that others struggle in the transition from working to retired helps. I wish nothing but happiness for you two and I will continue to find my happy spot in retirement
Put a little rice in the bottom of your cast iron to keep the bottom from getting over done. Also throw a few pieces of ice in to help it steam.
those colored rocks you found would make awesome jewelry to sell at your farm stand

Awesome, another channel! The property looks great. If your gas stove is over cooking the bottom of your dishes, go buy a pizza stone and put it on the bottom rack. It helps to distribute heat better so you don't get the hot spots.

Hey, I just found your new channel! That dinner looked amazing. Thanks for the encouragement to get out in nature with our partner. I’ll have to think more about that. Our problem is he loves the red rocks of the southwest and I love green and water. I also love a good thunderstorm! Thanks.

It took me a year to adjust to retirement. My husband still works. At times, he feels jealous of my free time. We did a lot together at my place of work, now we are looking for something to replace that. It is a joy to try new things but, at times, frustrating because nothing has stuck yet. Thank you for sharing your time with us.
Just found your new channel. Love That 1870s Homestead and now this channel at the cabin is special too. Congratulations in your retirement, Rachel. It is wonderful not having to get up and go to or be in an office mode. That campfire stew looked so good. Subscribed and look forward to your new "adventure".
Wonderful visit with you two & see how well you’ve adjusted to retirement, Rachel. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦

Nice video! Just found out about this channel. Love it as much as the 1870's one. Thanks for sharing. Retirement is an adjustment. After being a practicing ND for over 40 years, I was forced into retirement due to Covid and the mandates here in Michigan. What a whirlwind of emotions. Just keep finding the joy and gratitude you have each other. Mary Born, ND
I planted me a little Christmas tree and that thing turned red and is sharp to the touch. It looks dead but it is most certainly alive. Lol

I’d love to find a partner to do all those types of things with! It’s so hard to meet and find single, active men! So right now I’m living through you and Todd!
Rachael, out of an abundance of caution when using any chainsaw, never cut from underneath, up towards you, it is extremely dangerous no matter what type of saw you are using. We own a Stihl dealership and have seen nightmares doing this. Always remember how far are you from help if an accident happens.
Behind Rachel at 10:50 - did I miss that you all got a new black and tan dog? I thought all your dogs were Doxies. I remember you were caring for a white bully type a year or so back…

Catching up on your new channel. Subscribed of course. Sasafras. Federally BANNED (21 CFR 189.180) as a food additive. I remembered when it happen. 1976? And still love its fragrance. Yes, root beer! Hey, go fetch some paw paws! Those were on my list to have. I think you need 2 to cross pollenate. Barley and shrooms are good with your meal. Yes, your cabin is no longer a retreat. It truly is your 2nd home. Plus, you know that rain is FREE water you could collect??
