The recipe includes buttermilk powder, parsley (or alternatives like carrot tops), garlic powder, onion powder, dill, chives, salt, and pepper, with optional additions for sweetness or spiciness.
Rachel offered substitutions based on what might be available or preferred, such as using carrot tops instead of parsley and freeze-dried green onion tops in place of onion powder.
She highlighted the benefits of keeping buttermilk powder as a versatile pantry staple and how it can be easily mixed with water when needed.Making homemade mixes can save money and avoid unwanted additives found in store-bought versions.
Rachel illustrated this with the ranch mix, noting that a single bag of buttermilk powder costs less than multiple bottles of ranch dressing, and many ingredients can be homegrown.
The ranch seasoning mix is versatile, usable in various recipes beyond dressing, such as for chicken coating or popcorn flavoring.
Rachel encouraged viewers to explore other homemade pantry staples like taco seasoning, cake mixes, and hot chocolate mix, emphasizing the ease and benefits of preparing these at home.

I think schools should have videos like yours for Home Ec class. I’m in my early 70s and when I went to school we had Home ec. I learned so much in that class.

They don't have Home Ec today in schools , so sad.

I'm 42. When I was in middle school we had Home Ec. By the time I was in high school in the late 90s they had officially changed the name to Family and Consumer Science but the students still called it home ec. I took 3 years of home ec and got that as my technical education seal on my high school diploma (if we took 3 or more years in one elective course, we would get a special seal displaying our knowledge in that subject).

I loved Home Economics. I took it two years. I wanted to be a Home Economics teacher. It was my home economics teacher that told me it would be going away in years to come. I graduated in 1985. So sad.

@@carollorenzano5411 I think it depends on the school. My son *Grad 2023* and daughter *Grad of 2024**both did culinary and they fed the students and teachers at their school 3 days a week for the entire school year..
I just made homemade buttermilk ranch dressing this morning. It’s a very forgiving recipe. I just trimmed a bunch of herbs from my plants and added to my dressing. I always keep a half gallon of buttermilk in my fridge, and everything else is just pantry staples. Once you make your own dressing, you will never go back to store bought
i love that people are coming back to this. my mom and grandma made all there own stuff. and i have been doing it since the 80s and now my kids and grandkids do
Great video and recipe. I found out in 2019 that I have developed an allergic reaction to monosodium glutamate. It took my engineer husband's devotion to deduction to find it. He start focusing on cause effect, and found it. It was a mystery prior, because we looked at food's we were consuming, soaps, shampoo, laundry soap, lotions etc. But it was in spice mixes, salad dressing, sauces, crackers, and so much more. We went through every item in the house and gave 2 grocery bags full of items to family members. We now check every label, we rarely ate out before, so not doing it isn't an issue. The incredible thing is that I have no problem whatsoever when we travel throughout Europe. They don't allow that in their food. We all need to learn to scratch cook and avoid all of those chemicals.
Yes!! Timing is so funny! Today I was doing a restock of a few pantry items. I did ranch mix & taco seasoning. My family won't eat store bought ranch anymore. Lol. So glad you are a part of this collab.
OMGosh, my son has a degree in culinary arts and business management. I told him all that money was wasted if they didn't teach him how to make ranch by the 5 gallon bucket.
I love this collaboration. There is nothing better than homemade!!
The nice thing is you can control what goes in, like the amount of salt.
Awesome recipe to add to my pantry. Got a grand daughter going to college in August and she loves ranch dressing this will be great for her apartment. ❤😊Thank you.
Montreal steak seasonings , Montreal chicken seasoning. Does any one have a recipe?

In our area Hidden Valley Ranch is over $7.50 a bottle…my son loves putting it on so many things. I started making my own about a year ago and is is so much cheaper and BETTER TASTING!!!
The dill stem hint!!! Brilliant!! Thank you!!
Thanks so much Rachel! My grandkids love ranch dressing and I am definitely making and storing in the freezer. That way I can always have it on hand.
Yum! And so easy! Thank you Rachel for another great recipe! Blessings Kiddo!🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕
Thank you I love your channel! Thank you both for always sharing with us.
I actually didn't think about freeze dropped buttermilk! What a ❤ idea!
Two things. First. I made yuur chili base the other day (last years tomatoes were still in my freezer 😂) anyway, the chili base is amazing!! I added some pumpkin purée and dried zucchini but used your base recipe and it was fabulous!! Thanks! Second, I too make bulk ranch dressing mix and made some recently using what’s left in my bulk herb storage of my parsley. So in my head, I’m thinking I need to plant some more parsley so that I will have enough to get me through the winter. I was just thinking about doing that this weekend. I also have three beds of carrots that are ready for harvest so I won’t be planting parsley, I’ll be harvesting carrots and freeze drying carrot tops. Thanks so much for that as well!
Wow you’re looking beautiful!! Love how you fixed your beautiful hair!!❤
I love to make dry mixes . Can’t wait to make this thank you
I love the sound of these recipes, you know exactly what’s in there!
Thank you, Rachel. I have been planning to make this for a while, just needed to get around and find a recipe. Now I have one. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. I'll definitely be making this.
What a great idea! Finding ways to make the things you love to eat more healthy and saving money in the process is lawesome! Thanks Rachel!
This video is just perfect I was just looking forward to making something like this; thanks!!
🥰 I’ve been wanting to find this recipe for over a year and you just inspired me to get it done. Thank you Rachel 💖
I love this recipe and am going to order the supplies I need today. Thanks, Rachel for how you give so many great suggestions.
Yes! I love this! Thank you❤
That is awesome!! Thank you for this! Needed this!
Making your own versions of favorites is so fantastic especially for some who have allergies like I do! I spend so much time reading labels when shopping, I hate shopping now. Thank you for sharing!
So happy u r doing this recipe!! This is one thing I really can't stand to buy but my family loves...I am going to try this out! I love when u do videos like this!!
I have learned so much on your channel. Thank you for sharing.
Love it. Thanks. I see several things that will keep money in my pocket.
Love 3 T in my white chicken chili !! So good!
Thank you, Rachel!
Thank you for sharing this with us. I am going to make some.
This will be a great addition to the pantry! Thank you for sharing.
This is one of my favorite videos!! The extra tips for substitutions. I am the kid in school who couldn’t be given a piece of paper and told to draw something. So when it comes to cooking I need a recipe. I am slowly breaking away from that. I grow carrots and the thought of not have to grow parsley in my tiny space and just using carrot tops instead is perfect for me. Thank you so much for sharing this video. 😊
Thank you , I love the carrot top substitution . I will be adding this one to my pantry for sure .
What a GREAT RECIPE!!! Thank you so very much for sharing it with us!!! God Bless Us All!!!
This is a wonderful staple to have in our pantry thanks for sharing
I definitely am going to make this! Great pantry staple!
If you own a freeze dryer, you can make your own powdered buttermilk. Save even more. I plan to buy a small container of buttermilk, use it as a starter and make a couple of gallons to freeze dry.
Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you for this recipe
Thank you! This will be a wonderful addition to my pantry. 🙂🌻
I’m so excited for this!
This has been on my to do list. My daughter is obsessed with Ranch and even had a little wedding ceremony to commemorate her love.

Thanks for this, Rachel! I just realized I need to make Ranch dressing and wanted a new recipe. You look especially beautiful today, love the top or dress on you!
Hello from Allegan,Michigan. So glad I just found this video and channel. Great video!
Your ranch recipe to really good! I'm learning to make my own spices like garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, fried celery etc from what I grow is so much tastier and seems to even take less than those packets. Thanks Rachel!
I am wanting to start making pantry stables. Thanks for this collaboration.
I love that video, I will try it .
Great idea. Thanks for sharing
love making my own
This last year I started making my own dressings, started making fajita mix and taco mix… ranch was my next one- so thank you! I also started making my own flavored vinegars for salad dressing. Chive, rhubarb, strawberry top, going to try nasturtium this summer.
Carrot top pesto is also delicious! I love to grow parsley to make batches of chimichurri sauce. Goes great with so many things and freezes well. Great video! Thank you 😊
I do this all the time. And i use Oregano a d Thyme and sometimes Paprika. But i love the idea of carrot tops. ❤
Great video, thank you! I was just looking up making my own season-salt cause I want to get away from the pre-made stuff, this came right in time. I'm allergic to store bought ranch due to soy/vegetable oil they use, so I'm happy to try my hand at making my own. 😊
What a great ideal. I make mine own Taco Seasoning.Last year, I started making my own Powdered Onion and Powdered Garlic. I also make my own pancake/waffle mix.
Thanks Rachel! I appreciate you showing us how to use our pantry staples to make homemade mixes that are healthier, and cost much less than store bought. (Taste better too)
The great thing about what your sharing is - have singular ingredients ready and when your wiping up a batch of "something" your doing what you need without wasting and getting good fatigue. Take Good Care 🥂
Love this east recipe and video Rachel!
Thank you so much..
Love how your natural hair color as its coming thru beautiful😊
Thx Rachel.
I am so going to save my onion tops this year! Great idea of drying them. I rarely use ranch; it's not a flavor I enjoy much, I think because of the sour cream. I'd have to try dredging chicken in it; that sounds good.
I not a fan of ranch dressing, but my grandchildren are. I will be making this for them. Thanks Rachel!
I so needed this! I tried one a few months back but didn't like it. I said the other day when we ran out that I need to find another Ranch dressing mix. THANK YOU!!
Made this this dry Hidden Valley Ranch Mix today, made dressing, hubby tasted and said... mmmmm that's GOOD! I have been looking for a great copy-cat recipe for years especially now that "franken"- foods seem to be in everything Thanks Rachel Btw freeze dried buttermilk is amazing if you haven't tried it yet
Good recipe!
You're so calm in the kitchen, especially when canning. Thank you for the recipies. I live alone and don't put dressing on my salads normally. I might have a hard time using up even a small amount of ranch dressing, but I have saved the video just in case.

You could just use a up to a Tablespoon of this powder to 1/4 cup sour cream for a dip or combo of sour cream/ plain yogurt & milk for dressing. Make a smaller batch of the powder and store in freezer maybe?

I love ranch dressing and being able to adjust the recipe to my tastes is perfect. I love cilantro but not sure I would use it here.
I use a ton of ranch seasoning. I will look for buttermilk powder at the grocery!
We are just not milk drinkers but need it in cooking so a few years ago we started buying dry milk packets at walmart. PERFECT!!!
I do add cilantro, lime juice and green chiles to our homemade ranch and we use it on taco salads. It's really, really good. I add a tbsp of the dry ranch mix to our burgers and we have them with bacon, lettuce and tomato. BLT burger. There again, good stuff.
Rachel, you’ve got me thinking. We use a lot of Montreal Steak seasoning. I’m going to figure out how to make it!
I’ll need to pick up buttermilk powder. But I do freeze mine in 1/2 cup measurements so I always have some on hand. Same with ricotta cheese.
I don’t even LIKE ranch dressing, but do use it for dip and when grand kiddos visit… thanks for this. Have you ever freeze dried it? Would love more freeze drying vids and ideas, although i know it’s a more limited audience….
something to think about: Parsley: Falafels with loads of cilantro and parsley is incredible! they also bring in swallow tail catepillars. other bonus reasons to grow it: the flat flowers are amazing for bringing in preditory bugs, and it grows till heavy snow/ super hard frosts and is a biannual
Juicing my sour cherries today. The rain we have gotten (3 inches in 24 hours and not done) has made them split so its juice instead of pies. But cherry jelly will be so good in the middle of winter.
Thanks Rachel for another great homemade recipe. As crazy as it sounds, ranch dressing is also great to drizzle on top or dip pizza in. I've found that so many convenience spice mixes have MSG or other crazy things, I am in the process of converting everything I can. Found a major pickle brand that is putting high fructose corn syrup in dill pickles. Just got cucumbers today so won't buy those anymore.
I didn’t get to watch yet but I just know from the 38 seconds I’ve seen that I’m going to, so liking and will watch later. 😊
Much love from Wales 🏴 UK 🇬🇧 XxX 😽
This top looks super cute on you.
If you leave the buttermilk powder out you can use it in your canning recipes. We canned Mississippi pot roast with it.
I make your everything bagel recipe all the time! And your homemade bug spray! Thanks for this recipe! How would you make Italian dressing seasoning, like good seasons?
Thank you for giving alternatives for the ingredients. I am still trying to find a copycat Rice-a-roni rice pilaf recipe. ;)
I stopped buying ranch dressing mix several years ago and started making my own. I have not bought it since. I also make my own taco and chili seasoning. I make all 3 a pint at a time. 1/4 c is about the equivalent of 1 package.
This was perfect timing!!!! I omitted the chives today because I only have frozen pieces from the garden. I’m going to dehydrate the next batch…would that work next time??
I make a pancake mix kids love it with a little vanilla

Can I use my dehydrator to dry the fresh spices? I don’t have a freeze dryer. Thanks for this great recipe! 🇨🇦

Absolutely
I started reading ingredients from store bought products to educate myself on What are they putting in there. Now I mix my own staple items-WAY HEALTHIER, TASTIER & CHEAPER. Taco, Alfredo Sauce, Italian Spice , Hamburger Helper, Ranch, Seasoned Bread Crumbs, Spaghetti Sauce, Sloppy Joe, Meat Loaf, Italian dressing, French Fry Seasoning and more. Over the last 7 years I saved a ton of money, I NEVER buy the packets. Buying BULK- example 1 gal. black pepper 6 lbs. approx. $30, wow I literally save thousands. Those 3 inch high pepper containers are like $4 for maybe 3oz. Bulk 96oz. so 32 -3 inch cans for $30 instead of paying $128, I package extras in mylar to keep it fresh with an oxygen packet. Normally $30 would only buy me 7 1/2 cans, instead I get 32 cans when buying bulk. Spend $30 save $98 on just this 1 product. This provides STOCK in my pantry. By mixing my own it has allowed me to share with my daughter who is always throwing together some type of gathering for everybody and those packets can add up quickly when your making several dishes to feed 20-30 mostly youngsters with big appetites after swimming,camping,4 wheeling, hiking etc. (boy was I glad when she stepped up and took over the responsibility of feeding the "HERD" :).10teenage boys 1 girl and a 5yr.old boy. I get to sit back and enjoy the outings and watching the lessons taught over the years being performed by the next generation-a family that plays together stays together. Since I have been raising 3 grandsons and the 19 1/2 yr. old is moving out in a couple of weeks, I have shown him how a penny saved IS a penny earned and he will be able to eat heartily by saving money on making the convenience items in bulk which establishes a routine in always having what he'll need to cook for himself while being able to better afford good meal making habits. Sure it takes a few moments to mix together your ingredients, in the long run your saving on garbage bags too because your not opening a new convenience packet, saving on gas because you have enough at home in bulk there is no need to run to the store daily fight traffic then find out the product has sold out. I've shopped once a month since 1984, maybe 1-2 times a year I go twice. Use it up wear it out make do or go without.
Do you have a play list of the DIY mixes? Would love to learn more
