The Busy Dad Program Explained

The Level System:
If you can perform at least 1 6-count burpee in 20 minutes, but fewer than 50, and at least one Navy Seal burpee in that time but fewer than 20, you are a Level 1A practitioner. the remaining levels are unlocked by the following 'landmark' workouts. Each landmark workout must be completed within 20 minutes.
Level 1B: 50 6-counts; 20 Navy Seals.
Level 1C: 100 6-counts; 40 Navy Seals.
Level 1D: 150 6-counts; 60 Navy Seals.
Level 2: 200 6-counts; 80 Navy Seals.
Level 3: 250 6-counts; 100 Navy Seals.
Level 4: 275 6-counts; 120 Navy Seals.
Graduation: 325 6-counts; 150 Navy Seals.*
*Both graduation workouts must be completed within the same training week.

The amazing thing for me is, he doesn't charge anything to join the program. There's no pay wall. He teaches the movements, tells you the best way to participate in the program, and there isn't any cost. This man literally just wants to help people, WTF. Threw a few burpees into my training today but actually going to start the program tomorrow, thanks mate.

Been diligently completing my 80 minutes a week since early February this year. Haven't missed one session and I'm undoubtedly fitter, stronger and less flabby. I've been at Level 2 for a couple of weeks now and I'm still finding it challenging. The six counts I find more challenging now because there's so many in quick succession (200 in 20 minutes at level 2). I used to find the navy seals more difficult, now it's the other way around. I've convinced a good friend of mine to participate in the BDP and he's also stuck with it and is also seeing and feeling the benefits. The BDP suits me perfectly because I've zero interest in going to the gym or purchasing equipment. I like the simplicity and efficacy of the BDP. Max, your perpetual enthusiasm and belief in the system you've created is infectious. I'm glad I found you and your BDP early this year. I'm determined to continue on.

@mshaw9582, I'm right around the same time frame and level as you. Started in March and haven't missed a session. At first I found navy seals more challenging, but now I struggle more with 6-counts. The past couple weeks I've been struggling getting through 250 6-counts to hit level 3 (stuck around 225) with the hotter summer weather and faster pacing. A recommendation that helped me get through level 2, was adding an increment of 5 extra 6-counts at the beginning of the first 5 sets (1 extra per set) when you're the most fresh. Another idea would to jump up to level 3 video, but reduce the sets to 20 6-counts instead of 25 to reach 200 and see how it feels. This would give you faster pacing exposure, but longer breaks in-between the sets. It's amazing once you do Level 3 pacing for a bit, then go back to level 2 and all the sudden the pacing seems slow. I'm going to be taking a step back and try this approach to perform 23 reps instead of 25 to target 230 in 20 mins and work my way up to 250.

Thank You Max for the @busydadtraining method! Doing it consistently since the end of April. Started on Level 1A (with 40 6counts and 10 Navy Seals in 20 minutes) and reached Level 1B pretty quickly. Now I am trying to reach level 1C. Right now I can perform 112 6counts and 50 Navy Seals in 20 minutes. I was struggling to get rid of my overweight since 2019 when my son was born. I gained lots of weight and tried dieting and different types of sport to get rid of the extra weight. I did hard style and sport style kettlebell training regularly, where I gained some muscle but was unable to get rid of body fat. I can finally say, I started to get rid of body fat. When I started I was 106.8 kg, now I am 101.8. I am grateful for the method You gave us, this is gold! I would like to express my gratitude to you Max, @strongandconditioned and @busydadtraining!

Max you really must find time to create more content around the ambiguous philosophic and poetic elements of burpee training, BDP, the impacts and effects, etc. The highest viewed video on your channel that isn’t a tutorial is such a video (Why you should start training burpees today). Your passion and conviction is wildly infectious and inspiring. More importantly it is one of the largest holes in burpee content, everyone and their mothers uploads silent videos of hour long burpee routines, very few regularly speak about it conceptually, and I think, aside from the creation of the program itself and your ability as a practitioner, this is your STRONGEST skill by far, and truly sets you apart as a creator from much of the burpee crowd. You also just seem like a lovely guy and I think most of us who regularly watch your videos would like to hear more about your experiences, ideas, etc. As an aside, you used to recommend doing 10 dead hang pull ups every morning as something you did to balance the pushing of the BDP. Do you still make this recommendation/do this yourself? And also, for the viewers that have been asking lately as I feel some of these videos are responses to commenters, Lee made a video, etc. around the BDP itself. It is in the name, BUSY dad program. I think the BDP SERIOUSLY encourages and aids an active lifestyle, and that to me is what creates a lot of the balance people seem to be asking after. The BDP is the INTENTIONAL element of training, and yes it revolves around two intense cardiovascular pushing movements, but it’s only 80 minutes a week. Get out there and play. Not all physical activity must be rigorously programmed. Get in to hiking, rock climbing, jogging, recreational team sports, cycling, swimming, sailing, rowing, train a martial art or just go for a walk whatever it is. The BDP is, hypothetically, the programmed physical element of your life but it isn’t the only physical element of your life, and the fact that it is only 80 minutes leaves so much more time to pursue all these other things. Max is right, the difference between 4 20 minute sessions and 6 60 minute sessions running a PPL split (where prep travel and CD turns it in to really a 2 hr a day ordeal) is night and day. You now have so much time to pursue other things while still systematically improving your fitness via BDP. The real accessory movement to BDP should be your life around and outside of it. Trust me, if you follow BDP, do some pull ups in the AM, go hiking on Sundays, maybe yoga or something, go to a Muay Thai class couple times a week, go do pick up basketball with your buddies Thursday nights, etc all the while eating decent, you will become an absolute animal in every sense of the word. Cheers Max, love your content brother.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful, insightful, and eloquent message. I love what you say about the kind of 'training' one can and should do outside of BDP, and I'm also really grateful to you for your analysis of my strengths as a content creator and member of this community. I will really take your words on board. And yes, the ten daily dead hang pull ups will be a practice I take with me to the grave!

Max, I have been studying your videos/website for several weeks now. I'm 49 years old and my years of not taking care of myself (diet & exercise) is beginning to take its toll. I'm 6"2', 241 lbs, with hypertension under control by medication. Even worse are the mental and emotional effects of that inactivity. Entering at 1A...I just did my first 6-count workout and got 33 in 20 minutes...doing Navy Seals tomorrow. I am thankful for the simplicity of the program. I'm going to stay the course on this, and if it has the expected effects I will be an ardent ambassador of BDT and you will have my gratitude.

I've stuck to the program consistently for the last 2 months. Started off with 80 6 counts and 20 navy seals. Now I'm currently working on getting to level 2. I write my results in a book so that next time I can go into the session with a new target to hit. This summer heat doesn't make it any easier, however I always push myself even when I want to stop and rest for longer or quit. I'm always satisfied at the end knowing I gave it my all to make it to the 20 min mark. Lee is right when he says burpees take you into a dark place. I like to think about it as a sport and not just as an exercise. It's motivating. Thank you Max for providing us with a great program. I look forward to one day graduating!

That was a great lesson for me to start with the elemental parts of these movements. I've just completed my first week of 80 minutes of burpees. I managed 80 navy seals in 20 minutes this morning which was hard but satisfying. I was thoroughly expecting it to be extremely boring but have found this not to be the case. It is engaging and the 20 minutes fly by. I'm naturally sceptical but I've been sold this by BDT's enthusiasm for burpees. I arrive to this as a casual runner/5x5 lifter and would love to replace them with burpees. As I say, I'm sceptical but no longer have time for my 1 hour runs/workouts. I'd like to think that in 1 month, I can return to this comment and confirm this routine's effectiveness. I feel grateful to have found this channel. Love your enthusiasm and I really enjoy following along instead of working alone.

A tip for anyone that struggles at the beginning. When I started I couldnt really do burpees very well. I could do pushups but my mobility and flexibility was really bad. I had to work on stretching and getting more flexible. I used slingshot bench press sling and push up handles to give me added support to get started. I do not count this as leveling up but it does help get you on the path. I will only count true levels when I am able to hit my burpees numbers unassisted.

So running the numbers, do you suggest having shorter sessions every day or longer sessions with a day off in between. Normally there are rest days when lifting weights but not sure if your body reacts the same way.

Any advice for wrist pain after the first five-ish minutes? I've never had a wrist injury, but I'm also not someone who cared much for exercise before having kids so I'm pretty new to it all.

Question for the busy dads... I've been doing a modified version of the program for 3 weeks--10 minute sessions instead of 20 min. I've progressed to 50-60 six-counts and 20-25 Seals within that time frame, but I'm dusted by the 10 min mark. Should I just keep doing the 10 min sessions? Or extend to 20 min? My instinct is to bump up to 20 min since that's what is working for so many, even though it doesn't seem like I'll get many more in the second half. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if this has already been asked, but I noticed a discrepancy in the ratio of 6-counts to Navy Seals when progressing to level 4 and the graduation landmarks. Levels 1-3 call for a 5:2 ratio, while level 4 and graduation shift more towards the Navy Seals. What made you opt for this change? Was it due to the 6-counts getting too close to the upper limits within the allotted time? Not seeing 300/120 really threw off my inner OCD.🤣

Ha! Somehow you're the first person to have commented on this in years. I'm not sure how I intuited this when I put the program together, since the numbers were so far off at the time, but I had the sense that 140 seals would be too easy for graduation and 350 6-counts would be too hard. And my experience has borne that out. I'm fairly confident that I'll never hit 350 6-cts; also fairly confident that I could hit 140 seals tomorrow. Many others have told me that they find the 6-ct part of the program harder than the seal part, so I'm glad that it's not any harder than it is! But there's no worked out theoretical reason for the discrepancy. Thanks for your question!

I just did my first session and my strength is very poor. So much so that I'm barely breathing hard by the time I'm at total muscle fatigue and can't complete the press-up. I'd like to continue with this program to improve my strength but wondering if I should be adding in additional cardio to help improve fitness (and lose weight making press-ups easier!)

Great thoughts. Here is my recommendation: stick with the program, but for the next four weeks, replace half of your weekly 80 minutes with 4-ct sessions (i.e. old school burpees minus the push). These will help you build your cardio, but you'll also get the chance to work on your form. In a month, drop the 4-cts and just do BDP exactly as is. Time to get to work, my friend!!!

So sorry fornth delayed response, my friend! Absolutely there are success stories of women on BDP! I know at least one woman who is closing in on Level 4. There are fewer women in the program given that the sacred movements both involve push ups and a lot of women struggle with that movement. But if your wife is comfortable with push ups, she'll absolutely thrive in the program. If she's not, 4-cts can replace 6-cts.
