    Remember when Ned got stabbed in the leg and walked with a cane for the rest of the season because injuries used to mean something? If the red wedding had happened in season 6 all the Starks would have survived by doing backflips out of the castle and running home to get stitched up.

    In isolation I like the scene with Yara and Theon in Meereen, if only because as always Alfie slays with his acting, and it makes sense for him to relapse every now and again into a Reek like state. I can buy the idea of him constantly switching across S6 from being traumatized to acting brave because the one thing that snapped him out of his trance and kept him going initially was his will to save Sansa and get her to safety. The problem starts when the writers somehow decide that despite being malnourished, suffering from abuse and torture, not really caring about himself anymore, clinging to sanity only because of Sansa's presence, not having any resources, being wanted all over the North, insert many other reasons here, Theon suddenly is well, resilient and mentally balanced enough to walk by his lonesome all the way across the dangerous North to find a phantom ship to take him to the Iron Isles for no real reason. The organic sequence of events should have been him going along with the crew to Castle Black where he could then begin his mental and physical recovery. Of course his firsts encounters with Jon would probably be tense and force him to revert into his Reek persona, but we could see him slowly start to heal through interactions with Jon and Sansa (maybe other characters too), and finally getting to talk about the hell he experienced with Ramsay. On top of that, seeing as he knows Ramsay the best, courtesy of having been victimized by him for three seasons straight, he could have provided Jon information on how he operates and how to best manipulate him. He could have had a major role in the defeat of Ramsay, and that way Theon could have gotten some sort of closure. But no, instead Theon was yeeted out of his own subplot, which was then handed solely to Sansa as if she was the only one who suffered under Ramsay's control, as if she was the one who had her identity stolen and destroyed, only to be rebuilt as a dog devoted to its master, and was forced to become Yara's hype man. They writers couldn't even deign to give him a scene where he reacts to the death of Ramsay, the main antagonist of his storyline jfc, or have Yara show an ounce of empathy and try to hear him out.

    Tormund calling that blue dude "The Night King" is even weirder. The Night's King was a historical figure from thousands of years ago, some Lord Commander of the Night's Watch who allegedly married a Wight and started doing blood sacrifices or some shit. The Night's King was killed I think, and even if he wasn't, it was thousands of years ago, so assuming it's the same guy (and calling him the slightly wrong name) is just bewildering. It would be like if I saw a Nazi flag in my town and said aloud "oh shit guys I think Ando Hitler is back, alive, and coming to get us!" Actually, that's far too recent! It would be more like if I saw a dude on a horse and was like "Holy shit is that Norman King Willy the Conqueror?!"

  • @samc9516

    @samc9516

    2 жыл бұрын

    We learn the book's Night's King was defeated, but not sure if it ever says he was dead but I would assume so; it's said "a woman was his downfall", and my understanding is that she was a female Other rather than a wight. Regardless, we know that the Night's King was a human and humans usually do die at some point in thousands of years. We also know from the show that the Night King was made by the Children due to the coming of the First Men which led to the Long Night which predates the Wall itself, let alone the thirteenth Lord Commander. We know that the show's Night King was the first White Walker and we know that the book's Night's King made sacrifices to the Others. So we know they are different people. So why the hell Bran and Tormund chose a confusingly similar name (independently) is beyond me. I think the truth is D&D stole the name because it's cool and got it wrong and GRRM used that to emphasise that they are not the same thing because personally I highly doubt the Others will have a "king" presented in the same way the show did.

    The scenes at Bear Island and Deepwood Motte are early examples of how the writers decided that Sansa was going to be the diplomatic equivalent of a shotgun blast to the face -- I don't think she ever persuades anyone of anything in the final three seasons, and her specialty is to just antagonize whoever she's talking to while looking sour. Partly this is because D&D think this makes her look cool, I guess, but this is a truly ridiculous way to write a character whose strengths are supposed to be people skills and courtesies.

    The "he died for us'" line at 21:29 always annoyed me. No one questions it - even though people coming back from the dead is pretty much unheard of and Tormund was the only wildling to see Jon's dead body. I remember discussing the Arya stabbing scene with actual real people who defended this kind of shit. Arya used to be one of my favourite characters, right up there with Jon and Jaime. She is my favourite POV character besides Jon in the books (I am currently reading A Feast for Crows). She was written like an actual believable person. Maisie Williams was terrific to watch, such a good actress. What D and D did to her character is just unforgivable. Her development from one of the most believable characters to a marvel super hero is a disgrace. I have to this day never watched the rest of season 8 after episode 3. There was a time where I could meet a new person and bring up GoT as a subject and you could connect to that person right away. I miss this time. Thank you Glidus, your videos are extremly entertaining and I rewatch all of them like once a month. Every time you upload you sweeten my day. Thank you!

    You *can* survive a whole lot of things. I'm not totally shocked at that concept. But the insulting part is that, because it's Arya, it really never bugs her again. 99% of the time she'd be dead within the week. Compare with the Hound from this episode, because that emphasizes rules within their world. It's been some time, he's got a limp, his leg isn't perfect. Arya? She's all better and a total assassin. She doesn't have to train differently due to a long lasting injury. She doesn't have to seek out medical attention. She would need literal layers of stitches, painkillers, ointments to avoid infections... Nah. Super healing.

    I do like the idea of Sandor killing Gregor as a mercy killing. He's done with revenge, and is destroying the abomination and putting his brother's soul to rest. A conversation along the road to King's Landing with Arya explaining that was his aim, could have done so much. It could have been presented as one of many conversations they'd had during the weeks of travel But no time, had to wrap everything up in three episodes so King's Landing is only two blocks from Winterfell. That's where the jetpacking really hurts things. If you accept that things still take time and they're just not showing that anymore, then you have to give some indication that things have happened offscreen. If consecutive episodes are supposed to be actually weeks or months apart (e.g. Beyond the Wall & The Dragon and the Wolf) then at least do something with beards, hair, and clothes to give some indication time has passed. One of my favorite lines comes from Stargate SG1, where Teal'c explains to another that forgiveness is really more for the forgiver than the forgiven. Sandor forgiving Gregor doesn't absolve the mountain for what he did, it allows Sandor to move on towards being a better man.

  • @rafetizer

    @rafetizer

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'd rather have seen Cleganebowl crop up as a chance encounter. The early seasons spent a lot of time establishing that the Mountain is a violent sadist with a short fuse, and the Hound has some mix of hate and despair that it was his own brother who scarred him in the fire. It seems like the Hound dislikes his brother, and while he gripes about him, it doesn't exactly seem like he's intent on killing him. The later seasons' obsessive revenge theme didn't seem to fit well. I'd think the Hound would be more interested in staying out of the way somewhere, just trying to avoid people and bullshit in general. If he happened to come across his brother, it could have been a situation where the Hound finally decides to kill the Mountain, even though he's not ready for that level of action. Their paths could cross when Sandor arrives just a little too late to prevent the Mountain from hurting a random "little dove", maybe in some random village that earned Cersei's scorn or something. Anyhoo, the Hound would realize that he's got to stop his broski from hurting any more innocent people, and there you go - Cleganebowl.

    Even in hindsight its hard to understand why they did some of this shit, like how hard would it have been to have Arya get stabbed in a non vital part of her body.

    Yeah, that would have actually made her look good- would have showed that she's actually learned some good acrobatic/combat skills and that she's very capable. Even if she'd had a more minor wound like a surface level cut that she had to then seek treatment for, it would be more believable.

    Loras being heir to Hi-G is also fukin stupid cosidering that Tyrells seemed quite happy to let him join Renly’s kingsguard. You know, the one with no inheritance and shit. And as it happens now its suddenly a large ass problem for mamma Tyrell. And probably for that guy who made Mace-T’s fancy hat in ep5. I love this series btw. Takes me back to places I didnt know I didnt wanna visit.

    @@fightingmedialounge519 Of course they would have, had Renly actually won the iron throne. Brienne and co would have been knighted to the kg and take their vows, have their white cloaks, white book etc. Basically Renlys rainbow guard was an unofficial kingsguard, as much as Renly was an unofficial king. Had he took the throne, Loras would have been named probably the lord commander and in front of the high lords and ladys so there wouldnt have been any way for him to ever be heir to highgarden after that if he didnt want to be an oathbreaker.

    @@fightingmedialounge519 i think if you think very hard about it, its even more presumptous to assume that he would change the rules to the most prestigeous position in the kingdoms only because he wants to be king before stannis. its way more speculative to assume they would not do things in traditional way than to assume they would. and doing things by the book keeps people on his side because if you think you can reform stuff in westeros without backlash you have not been paying attention. and let me add that renly wanted to be the king of westeros, not bring a new world order like your targaryens and eurons

    I am annoyed that they don't even mention the Manderly's. They couldn't even do a scene where they send a raven and later get a reply. They could've sent Davos to White Harbour and have him talk to Wyman and have him mention a dead son and an imprisoned one and that's why he doesn't help Jon, because he doesn't want more Manderly blood spilt over nothing. Guess this couldn't be done because it took more than 5 brain cells to think of.

    The Hound Jaime,and Bronn were my favs and they screwed them up in the last 3 seasons. They wrecked Jaime's redemption arc and the Valen'Qar prophecy. They turned Bronn into a joke character at the end instead the badass/also reformed mercenary i always saw him as. And they had the perfect oppurtunity to reunite the Hound and Arya early on and fucked that as well. I only have seasons 1-5 on dvdd and the books, thats where the series ends for me.

    I'm kind of pissed about the Theon thing too because like. It affected him SO MUCH that it's in the frickin' soundtrack! You can tell! His theme/leitmotif changes when he's "Ramsay's" so much that it nearly becomes Ramsay's leitmotif! It keeps the same progression as Theon's/the Iron Islanders' theme, but takes on the pace and overall mood/rhythm of the Boltons. It's very blatant and it's all just pushed aside! I'm so serious listen to "What is dead may never die", then "Let's play a game", then "Reek". It's so clear what's happening and it's a shame it never went anywhere.

    I burst out laughing at the "each Northerner is worth 100 Southron swords" bit, I love seeing those kind of sayings put together mathematically I also am not the biggest fan of what happened to Theon (or really any character), but the fact that Theon doesn't ever mention Ramsay is kind of realistic. Loads of people who undergo extremely traumatic experiences will clam up about it completely afterwards, from war veterans to S.A. to horrific accidents. I'm not saying that I agree with Theon never bringing up Ramsay ever again, but it isn't a crazy deal-breaker for me. Now almost the entirety of the rest of Seasons 6-8, those Seasons are deal-breakers

    Imagine a world where Sansa brings Theon to a prison cell, and offering him to get revenge on a malnourished and mutilated Ramsay, thinking revenge would make him whole or something like that. Just as she said that "rape made her strong" and how she got revenge on Ramsay. Only for Theon to break down because just being close to Ramsay, no matter which state he's in triggers Theon's trauma too much. Idk, you could even use that to make Sansa reflect on what she's been through without making it a "yas queen" Girlpower moment but instead a somber one where she reveals to Theon later how she puts on a facade all the time. Just an idea.
