The Catelyn breakfeast is great from a story perspective. Catelyn had refused to care of herself while she sat at Bran's side, never eating properly. After almost dying to the assassin she finally gets the resolve to live again and realises that she has been neglecting herself, Robb and everyone else. When she asks for breakfast everyone is so happy and reliefed about it that they go over the top, cause they care. She temporarily developed a eating disorder out of depression.

I already posted a comment but another point. In the first third of Clash there's like five or six chapters in a row that juxtapose the food people are eating as political commentary. People starving in king's landing while Tyrek's wedding feast is flaunted. The harvest feast in the North. Tyrion eating like a king. Arya eating bugs and worms in the Riverlands. The summer feast with Renly's people, etc.

Catelyn's first food description does benefit the story! The food she gets is kind of normal, just a bit extra. She got more than she asked for, which says she probably didn't ask for much, that gives you a decent idea where her head is at. Also, the fact she was given more than she asked for tells you the people serving her care about her a bit, what with her son probably being dead soon, and want to cheer her up with blackberry preserves. We can contrast it with the next meal from Bran, which is more like party food. They're celebrating his revival. Or not because that would have been like a fortnight ago, oh well.

14:00 As someone who comes from an ex-nomad people, yeah, everything used to be horse-based. There were only horses around and whatever they could trade (like flour, oil and such), so all the food was very heavy (so that you don't need to stop often) and related to horses. A lot of fermented stuff because you don't have a fridge and you need to preserve the milk somehow. I never tried araka or kumys, but some people swear by it. The pastry - mostly simple dishes from flour and water or flour and milk, fried in oil.

Chickpeas are originally from Asia Minor (Turkey) but they were grown in Italy by the Romans. More recently people successfully grow them in England, so while they need a temperate climate they certainly can be grown in relatively cool climates. Chickpeas main virtue is that they can be dried and used in winter, so the Nights Watch probably import them from other areas of Westeros or from Essos (impounded perhaps).

I love that he mentioned acorns as food. It's very much under-estimated. There were entire bronze age woodland cultures that started living mainly on acorns. The bitterness and poisoning quality comes from the tannins in the acorn, which are water soluble. They filled large earthen basins with water and washed out all the tannins of a huge amount of acorns, which are plenty in the forest and which can be stored for a long time, even somewhere as simple as a hole in the ground.

The fermented mare's milk is just kumys, a mongolian/kazach extra fermented yogurt, it can be made rather strong in alcohol content, never tried tho. Probably sucks in terms of taste, but makes perfect sense for a society that doesn't grow plant-based things to make cheap drinks from. Also, dishes from blood are a thing, it comes down to letting blood curtle and boiling it until it thickens. I don't like it personally, but some people I know do. Where I live it's usually made into sausages, wonder what a pie would look like actually. It's cheap too, but takes time to make

Really enjoyed this one. It's a great topic because it lends itself to talking about the books from a 'micro' perspective (the actual craft of the writing etc.), while stuff like theory or character discussion (which is also great obv) often defaults to a 'macro perspective'. If I wasn't already a book reader, this'd honestly be the type of stream that I reckon would get me into the books.

Team Rocket are disguised as vikings (it makes no sense in context either), Brock says "i didn't know vikings still existed" to which Ash quips "they mostly live in Minnesota". So not only do vikings conically exist in Pokemon, so does the state of Minnesota and so does the Minnesota Vikings football team.

I think Catelyn III, AGOT may be trying to emphasize the homeyj feeling of Winterfell for Catelyn so, when she leaves, you can understand her homesickness/nostalgia on a more visceral level. I feel like the hot spring water that pumps through the castle walls and abundant furs all contribute to that as well; it all conveys "cozy". Also, to emphasize that it was more than she asked for could imply she didn't ask for much bc she's worried sick about Bran but the servants of Winterfell are concerned for her wellbeing. More "homey, safe" vibes.
