    Paddy's performance in this episode is terrifyingly accurate to what it's like to watch an elderly figure of your family, once highly intelligent and lucid, slowly slip and wither away, bit by bit, year by year, until there's almost nothing left. And just when you lose all hope, a moment of clarity, strength and lucidity returns to them! You think maybe there's a chance they're "back". But that thought is as fleeting as their returned strength, and thereafter they just... die. It's a very specific sort of death performance and goes deeper than anyone can credit Paddy for. He deserves all the goodness for the honesty in his performance. Edit: Apparently editing your comment to fix typos made when too zooted off the zaza makes KZread think you don't deserve love. Sorry for losing your heart Glimbo. It was an honor (I have crippling credit debt)

    It's heavily based on her own's mother passing away due to illness so it makes sense that someone as (seemingly) introspective as Paddy is able to give layers of viability to the performance. It's based on his lived experience... one that more likely than not he's gone through over and over in his head, making sense of it, reflecting on it, etc.

    It’s very common for terminally ill patients to have that surge of apparent strength, lucidity and good health. It’s known as “rallying” in the health care industry. I worked for several years at a nursing home, and witnessed it frequently, as well as seeing it with members of my own family. My mother is a nurse practitioner specializing in gerontology and has told me about many cases that she has personally witnessed- it also happens with patients who stop chemotherapy suddenly. After dealing with the pain and sickness that chemo causes, the patient will suddenly begin to feel really good, and even appear to be getting healthier, but it’s only because they are no longer experiencing the symptoms that chemo causes (as it’s basically poison).

    Ottos little congratulations at Haelena after she speaks at the dinner is so cute. He loves his grandchildren and is probably 100% aware that their parents don't. Otto knows she probably doesn't speak up much and applauds it. That act alone made me believe that Viserys wasn't hallucinating the happiness after. Otto is allowed to be happy. Maybe when he was laughing and clapping, he was secretly happy that he didn't have to keep all his scheming up anymore and could just be happy with his family

  • @Winter-Alpha-Omega

    I agree. Poor Helaena seemed to be the most favoured of Viserys' and Alicent's disfunctional circus family. But even then, she was second to Rhaenyra and Alicent seemed to treat her as a doll or a figurine she can manipulate.

  • @viviandarkbloom1447

    @viviandarkbloom1447

    Жыл бұрын

    I read his congratulations a bit differently- Otto seems more happy Helaena can perform the social expectations of her role as a princess giving a toast in that moment. In other words, it’s “good” she successfully delivered a toast in front of people & fulfilled the social expectations of her role as a princess. This mirrors how he dismissed Alicent’s personal feelings and concerns in favor of seeing her only as valuable in her capacity to perfectly fulfill her social position at court. It seems less like he loves her for who she is & more so for her ability to conform to social norms & carry out his wishes in that way. His positive response of “Good”after she’s just made a toast which mentions Aegon “only” assaults her when he’s drunk … is a bit dark (tho he does truly seem genuine). Otto seems to care more about her ability to perform the toast & less about paying attention to the content of what she’s saying… which is that the kid he wants to be king is a (to quote glidus) “a total dropkick” (Not saying he doesn’t love her! The scene can be interpreted multiple ways- I think we need to have a few more scenes with Otto & his grandchildren to know).

  • @Winter-Alpha-Omega

    @Winter-Alpha-Omega

    Жыл бұрын

    @@viviandarkbloom1447 1- I think that's a plus for the HOT D. Scenes are ambiguous. Personally, I read it both ways. He does care about her... and he's also happy she can perform and get out of her neurodivergent headspace for a bit (I'm sure he'd only call her weak or soft). 2- I always imagined Otto saw his grandchildren as pawns in his game of conspiracies and bullsh¡t. As a grandfather? To the point and cold.

  • @viviandarkbloom1447

    @viviandarkbloom1447

    @@Winter-Alpha-Omega definitely agree! it’s a strength of the show for me! In fact, I think it is both - I think Otto loves Helaena, but because every relationship in this system is intertwined with complex social & political dynamics, his love for her is complicated by these other forces. My reading in no way is meant to dismiss the other ways of interpreting the characters motives and relationships. I think these interpretations can co-exist.

    "At once The Man and that girl, the oppressor and the oppressed" - I'm so hyped that you talked about this scene. I think Alicent is one of the best examples I've ever seen of a morally conflicted character who's *just* self aware enough to realize they're complicit in something terrible, but not brave or morally upright enough to actually do anything about it. I like that she's a villain who wants to be a good person- and clearly even has impulses towards doing the right thing- but she just keeps digging herself deeper and deeper. I find that really compelling from a storytelling perspective; it's a novel break from redemption arcs or characters whose terrible qualities just live alongside their good ones, and we root for them because the one overrides the other. I think it's also just reflective of more "realistic" villainy- of people being complacent, complicit, or apathetic rather than just two-faced.

    I don't think she's self-aware at all. Not until Rhaenys says it outright. And even then she's so deep in delusion that she thinks the people she fights for will give her the respect and sense of belonging she's wanted for so long. Then she is dumbfounded yet again when the small council and her father left her out of supplanting Rhaenyra plans when they're all on the same team. XD It's beyond ridiculous.

    Sadly as much as Paddy deserves an Emmy this year, he will not be getting one unless HBO pushes for him to be nominated in the Best Supporting Actor Emmy. If he gets nominated for Best Actor- Drama, he will not win as it will go to either Bob Odenkirk, Jeremy Strong, or Brian Cox, all who will most likely be nominated for the award as it is the last year for Succession and Better Call Saul. With that fact don't hold out hope that Hot D will win any awards this year.

    I might be wrong, but I believe the music during the Helaena and Jace dancing sequence is also the one that plays during Aemma's death and Baelon's birth and tournament from the first episode (might even be the same one, sounds too similar, idk a lot about music). Which is sad but oddly fitting as well. Just like Baelon's birth, the dinner was a short-lived promise of peace, a resolution to Viserys' burdens, a future that almost happened but ultimately was never meant to be.

And a scene with Aegon and Aegon in front of a portrait/statue of Aegon. And a scene where Jacaerys plays with Jahaerys and Jahaera under a portrait of Jahaerys.

    So here’s some fun facts about Aemond’s toast for you all. Because I’m interested in translation and also am insane, I’ve decided to look up how this scene was translated in other languages I speak. In Russian dub Aemond says that Luke and Jace are ”dark-haired, handsome…like their father” and raises a glass to “sons of their father” which is a bit clumsy at first glance but ultimately a good decision in my opinion. The word play is one of the most difficult things to translate and I don’t think there was a way of saving it in this particular case, so I’m glad they still managed to show some ambiguity and didn’t just use strong as an adjective. And then in French they just translated the entire house Strong as house Fort (=strong in French) which is lazy and cheating. It was house Strong in A Feast for Crows but then was translated in A Dance with Dragons and The World of Ice and Fire, although I don’t know which name it is in the French version of Fire and Blood. Mmm yeah thanks for coming to my tedtalk (in Glidus’ comment section). The funniest thing is, I was so excited to tell all of this that I prepared the comment before watching the whole video and then watched the entire linguistics bit and I feel so validated now. Never change Glimbo Also the smallest joke about oof sound and tommy made me unreasonably happy

    Yes! Translating puns and witty insults is very difficult. Do it correctly I feel like you'd need the entire script first. So you can go back and forth to check how your chosen translation of something like House Strong will work when the resident joker is in town. I tried my hand at translation but it's WAY harder than most people realise and in the end I didn't have the patience for it.

    I wondered every single episode how Viserys tamed Balerion. All of the other massive dragon riders are so stern and strong and clearly worthy of their mounts. Viserys was always kinda passive and he seems to have really not given two shit flying fucks about his other children. Always unsure, always wanting piece but also very susceptible to others, Viserys doesn't seem like he could have rode The Black Dread. Then he walked across a room and I knew how he tamed Balieron. He is fierce and not afraid of any of the people standing in that room. Not even a little. He's been maybe a little too cautious in his life since he rode a nuke around Kingslanding, but I can't blame him. But in his heart he is every bit as strong and wonderous as his former dragon. Paddy will forever be my favorite in this show. Matt Smith is fun and all but he's so much and so unhinged at times that it's chancy to put him on screen all the time because he would just keep eating it.

    The throne room scene is by far one of the greatest scenes of HotD. I actually interpreted Alicent and especially Otto's looks somewhat differently - there is definitely defeat and frustration over their plans being foiled, but I honestly think they were genuinely awed by Viserys's suffering for the sake of his daughter, and it likely moved Alicent to try to make peace with Rhaenyra at dinner. The look Otto gives Viserys as he enters the throne room is so great, you can see so many emotions all at once - despair, fear, concern, awe, admiration, even love.

    The last dinner is the most amazing scene in the whole season imo, from start to finish. So many details to pick up on as well. While Raenerys and Alicent are seated relatively near each other they are not saying a word, but if you listen closely Aemond and Aegon are whispering on the left side of the table with the Strong brothers and their betrothed murmuring on the right side. You can even hear Aemond say, "Even when the noose is so tight, they expect us to break bread..." just before Vissy is carried in. Lovely stuff.

    Emma D'Arcy is in no way overweight so yes it does seem odd to cast them for a "pudgy" character. However, I think the contrast between Emma's more solid build and Olivia Cooke's very slim one get the image across. Emma's dresses also emphasize the width of their shoulder's and are sort of similar to the one Cersei wears at the purple wedding which emphasized Lena's slimness. The shoulder emphasis helps to assert the person wearing the dress and make them take up more space and makes them look more powerful. Cool fashion choices impeccable HoTD detail as per usual!
