The Bridge - Onward & Into the Storm with Garand Thumb

Mike Jones, otherwise known as Garand Thumb, stopped by our headquarters for a podcast and some exciting new projects. On this week's episode of The Bridge Podcast Travis and Mike talk in detail about his new company Onward Research, his journey throughout two military branches, his popular KZread channel, and what it took to achieve these amazing milestones. Join Travis and Mike as they take a dive into the lesser-known side of the “Z list KZreadr.”
Bridging gaps within our industry one conversation at a time. The Bridge is not a show about firearms, training, or the military as some might expect. It’s about people; connecting with others, sharing experiences, exchanging perspectives, and healing together through sometimes vulnerable conversations about difficult topics. We hope to help and heal others as we do so for ourselves by airing these conversations for all to hear. Thanks for listening! We hope you enjoy the show.

Full stop: the right and the left are both needed. A "right wing" only America isn't going to be as great as some may think and nor would a left-wing America. Both sides of the aisle have GOOD solutions and GOOD people who are genuinely interested in making the best country. I'm a liberal who supports 2A. I support self-defense of self and property. I also support not having a situation where poor people aren't having to beg on the streets for a basic roof over their head, clothes on their back, and food in their belly. It doesn't mean I think they need to live in a McMansion and drive a brand new Escalade with eat caviar for breakfast. If you're a POS criminal, there's jail or worse. If you're just down on your luck or fighting some mental illness, I don't think you gotta be treated like a shitbag. I think MOST Americans are like me in that sense.

I disagree. It's also arguably the most important weapon against tyranny we have ever created. Before the internet, the only information you had access to were whatever books you had access to in your local library (which may or may not be out of date and had an equal chance of giving you incorrect information), and whatever your government-controlled media showed you. The internet, just like guns, is not inherently good or bad. It's simply a tool. If it's made your life worse, that's your fault for not learning how to use it correctly. I agree that most people don't know how to use it correctly, but I believe there will be enough of us who do some day to be able to teach future generations how to navigate it easier. You must simply fight intellectual laziness and learn how to do proper research in a scientific manner. As long as you keep those things in mind, you'll be alright.

Travis, this is my first episode of your podcast ever and it could not have been a better one for my mental state. When you mentioned talking to old folks about whether or not we have had hard times like this and for them to say “yes it’s been worse” makes me feel so much better about our chances as country and a society. I am a 26-year-old father of two and I feared that my children were growing up into a potential hellscape. 22:54 great segment on social engineering. If you want to see a perfect example of social engineering that just about everyone can grasp, try watching Friends first with the laugh track on, then with it edited out. You'll quickly realize that none of the jokes are actually funny, but the laugh track makes you subconsciously want to join in with the laughter.

@@bofa83 two things. One, I loved Friends as a kid and it kinda bummed me out when I watched it with the laugh track edited out. Two, not all of that show is filmed in front of a live studio audience, they absolutely use a laugh track and even the segments that are they cue the audience to laugh, clap or aww at certain times (I've been in the live studio audience of a couple of shows).

Hey guys. Our Lady of Angels was a school fire in Chicago. 93 children and 3 nuns died. There is plenty of information on it and a book written about it. I would recommend it as good information to read. These things created our fire code. Yes learning from past history and learning/preparing from it is critical. Thanks for both of your work

My only regret is not spending more time with him. The worst is knowing my two kids will never know their grandfather. My goal is to build something that ties us together and reinforces the idea that in the end family is your biggest ally and supporter. Keep charging brother.

That story about vulnerability was powerful. I remember reaching my breaking point the day I moved out of my parent's place to a whole new state - eating fast food on the kitchen floor with all my things still packed in the truck after driving 14 hours. Never loose sight of what those moments mean, they keep you on the path.

How many of us wish we had a father that taught us those kinds of things with that kind of clarity and purpose, and are now striving to clean up the generational gap and be that kinda of assertive, purposeful, firm, good men that military discipline creates when combined with good values? Thank you for sharing your experience and values and knowledge. We're all doing our best to learn together what our country is far too quickly forgetting.

Mid 20’s, out of shape (but I’m actively working on that), no girlfriend. Just a good paying job I can tolerate and too many ambitions with not enough drive to peruse any of them. Lots of things I have to work on and I feel like I’m starting a little late. Better late than never though.

@@Maximus5775I wish I had heard any of this information at 17. You’re already ahead of me on that front. This is the first year I’m going to make 6 figures as a mechanical engineer, but it’s not going to mean anything if I can’t live my life the way I know I need to live it. I’ve been doing a whole lot of information/knowledge gathering the past year, but not a whole lot of practical application of it. It’s coming time to take action and not just sit around thinking about the problems and solutions. I’ve started my business and am working on that, which makes doing other things hard just due to time, but that excuse isn’t going to cut it anymore I guess. I’m rewatching this and saw my own comment. You’re 18 now and I hope things are going well. Hopefully you’re pursuing the things in life that will give yourself purpose and meaning. That’s what’s most important. Surround yourself with good people that want the best for you as well. You are the combination of the 5 people you’re closest to, so make sure whatever that looks like is someone you would want to be. I know that’s not exactly true for me right now so that’s something I have to change soon. Good luck, man.
