The Bridge

The Bridge

Bridging gaps within our industry one conversation at a time. The Bridge is not a show about firearms, training, or the military as some might expect. It’s about people; connecting with others, sharing experiences, exchanging perspectives, and healing together through sometimes vulnerable conversations about difficult topics. We hope to help and heal others as we do so for ourselves by airing these conversations for all to hear. Thanks for listening! We hope you enjoy the show.

Why the Canadian army ditched the FNC1A1 (FN-FAL) 7.62 x 51 for C7/C8 (M-4 & M-16) is beyond me. My understanding, they were not just decommissioned, they were destroyed because they did not want them in the civilian market. What is your opinion of the AR-10?

look I am a brit of the cold war Era. We had the 7.62 SLR. With the right Butt size it was a decent weapon. 7.62 was the calibre for a reason sorry for the saga below We were told that the objective was to try and engage the soviet infantry at distance if we could. Hence the amount of training on the ranges. It was to hit them at distance take as many down as we could. No john wayne shit. It was hit them anyhow. Because our job would then to be disengage when would could have done as much damage to tanks, BTR's BMP etc. When they dismounted to engage us to hurt them as much as we could. Then bug out. We would fall back before they dropped anymore artiallary on us. And we would drop back to pre-prepared positions. Let them come on to us again and hit them again. And our pre prepared positions were placed so that we could see them from distance, but were not totally obvious positions that soviet artillery would smash in a pre registered planned artillery strike. Hit them, stall them, move position (not necessarily fall back) It was to attrit them as much as possible and slow them. So that operation reforger could have a chance of coming to fruition.. So 7.62 with its longer range was the choice for a reason. Semi automatic with aimed shots. The soviets has 7.62 AKL47 less accurate but they could pour down a lot of fire on us. But we could just pick them off

In basic training in the late 60's, we had to qualify with the m16, after initially qualifying with the m14. The cadre called the "new" rifles Poodle-shooters.

Unlikable men have to hang out with each other and they don't even like each other that much. It's the being banished from society for doing measurable wrong that wouldn't bug me, losing my life's goal of never killing another human being would probably be a cause for self termination; because at that point I've lost my humanity anyways.

**.308 is the Best Choice for Civilian Fighting Cartridge and Here’s Why:** **Survivability:** If you're using a 5.56 Mk18 clone, you’ll likely be the first to be eliminated in a conflict. To improve your survivability against modern enemies equipped with advanced armor, you need to engage them from a distance beyond the effective range of common rounds (500 yards). **Lack of Military Support:** As a civilian, you don’t have the assets or intelligence capabilities that military units do to get within 500 yards of the enemy. You need a cartridge that can effectively engage targets at longer distances without such support. **Ammo Efficiency:** While a 5.56 user may carry more ammo, they will expend it quickly, often ineffectively. In contrast, with a .308, you can deliver more accurate and penetrating fire, even through barriers and cover. You won’t need as many rounds to achieve the same effect, especially at distances of 700-1000 yards where the 5.56 becomes ineffective. **No Need for Specialty Ammo:** The .308 is effective without the need for specialized ammunition. Standard 147-grain ball rounds are capable of incapacitating or severely injuring targets, even those wearing armor. The 5.56, on the other hand, relies on rounds like the M855A1 to be effective, and the most common 5.56 round, the 55-grain ball, is significantly less effective. **Versatile Ammunition:** The .308 cartridge can be reloaded using various 7.62 rounds like 30-06, .300 Blackout, or .300 Win Mag, making it highly versatile. This adaptability is critical in survival situations where ammo supply might be limited. The .308 also benefits from being one of the most abundant calibers worldwide, ensuring easier resupply and reloading. **Versatility:** The .308 is effective with both subsonic and supersonic rounds. Even if subsonic rounds don’t cycle in a gas-operated gun, you can still use them in a bolt-action setup to reduce your signature while maintaining effectiveness. The 5.56 lacks this capability. **Stand-off, Accuracy, Lethality:** The .308 provides greater stand-off distance, accuracy, and lethality. In a crisis situation, you want to eliminate threats, not just wound them. The .308’s performance in adverse conditions like rain, forest, or wind is superior, and it offers a better chance of incapacitating armored opponents at range, something the 5.56 cannot reliably achieve. **Summary:** The .308 cartridge excels in survivability, long-range engagement, and effectiveness against armored targets. It is more versatile, doesn't require specialized ammo, and offers better performance in adverse conditions. For civilians without military support and needing a reliable, adaptable round, the .308 is the best choice.:

Haven't watched the video or the comments. The 5.56 is basically a .223 with a FMJ....In the UK that's not even enough to be conditioned for fox with the FMJ bullet head. It's a joke round bought in for all the wrong reasons. Too long in the tooth to get into this argument but ex British Commando before the ubiquitous armchair warriors pile in..

Anything you can hit in 5.56, you can hit better in 7.62. Flatter traj, higher velocity, way more energy to reach out and touch someone, and the report can change fight psychology. Cost is moot, reload. Weight and the tinnitus are the only negative.

Anyone who fought in Africa e.g. Angola or Mozambique where there were heavy actions and body counts will tell you 7.62 prevents them getting back up .. End of Story no debate! PS. And there's a big difference too between 7.62x39 (AK) versus 7.62x51 (FN Nato) as well

What was on the show is just the ggk selection, not even their actual training yet, some people question the 100km march and the immediate 10 days jungle training, but during the communist insurgency, where the communist was as good in guerilla tactics, tracking & jungle warfare, they actually had to be inserted 80-100km to avoid detection, there after to track the enemy & to survive in the jungle with minimum ration and to survive in the worst condition. Hats off to The Vat69 & GGK, worthy of respect.

There is no perfect gun or caliber. It's all situational dependent. That's why you should have options available. The problem with the US Government and military is that they want one gun, one fighter jet, etc that can do everything, primarily for lower costs and easier logistics. But generally these all-in-ones excel at nothing. Train and equip for the next mission, not the last one.
