Hey Merphy just wanted to let you know that you converted me into a reader. I stumbled upon your channel, when you released you first avatar review a couple months ago and I loved the video so much that I actually subscribed to your channel, as I thought it might give your channel a little boost, even though I am not a reader at all. At first, I only watched your avatar stuff, but as videos from your channel started popping up in my recommendations, I started to watch your other videos as well. I guess after a while your passion and enthusiasm for books made me revaluate my own stance on them. Anyway, in one of your videos you mentioned that peter pan was one of your favorite books and I figured that it was worth a shot, so I ended up ordering it on amazon with a bunch of other books. In the beginning it was rather difficult for me to understand everything as English is not my native language, but I powered through and at the end I actually enjoyed reading it and felt a sense of accomplishment. Since then I have read Frankenstein and a bunch of books from Kafka as I am from Austria and he is probably the most famous author from my country. I am currently reading the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and I am loving it. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you probably also changed the life of many other with your channel and the work that you put into your videos.

I just loved your shock at "stalking an author". Not because it's something that's super common, but because you have some of the best reactions

For me, books mean: empathy, stimulation, relaxation, nourishment and, of course, escapism

Your story about turning your husband into a reader reminded me of when I was about 9 and my sister was 7yo and I made her sit and listen to me reading the first Harry Potter book to her. I was so in love with the story and she refused to read it herself, so I made her listen instead. Eventually she picked up book 2 on her own and the rest is history!

My sister actually got me into reading because she was so excited about the books she was reading, and now I’ve been a huge reader since 2017 I think:) I read before that but maybe like 1-5 books a year and mainly for class

Well, I certainly used to be a reader, but a bad English degree program at University turned me off of reading for a long time, and this channel reminded me how to have fun with my old hobby. Reading wasn't my hobby at all, but then i came across your harrypotter plot holes video (btw m a big hp movies series fan) so i went ahead and read them. And by now I've started reading a good amout of books. And it's thanks to you and your channel.

Audiobooks got me back into reading. I think because I just love the idea of being read a book while I do other things. I have mad anxiety and a busy schedule so I found I never had time to read in the past and would get through maybe one book a year... Now I do one to two a month over the course of two years! I'm reading The Dark Tower at the moment and I'm up to book 5. Book 4 made it into my top 3 books of all time. Hugely recommend.

So long as it works for you 😊 I was born in outer London and then moved to a town of 200k as a kid.

I usually get antsy if I go one day without reading ... some people call it a problem, I call it life. I always tell my mom I could be addicted to worse things than books.

This is a great video! I know I bring up books in most conversations(it's becoming a problem), but it's getting to the point that people know me so they bring up books on their own now.

I love the book hangover one and the harry potter one, you know the one with the potterhead in it.

5 word to describe reading for me, “it means just about everything”. That may be a slight over exaggeration but not far off. Also, I get what you mean about audiobooks. On my hour ride bus trip into and back home from work during the week I can listen to them. But outside of that, I can’t really listen to them. I think the only audiobook I listened to outside of my commute time were the King Killer Chronicles. And I am pretty sure I only did that because the reader was amazing. I’d suggest it to you, but I know you have already read both KKC books.

I grew up being in love with reading, since my mom is such an avid reader (she reads every night before she goes to sleep). At some point after I graduated high school I kinda stopped reading, but always lamented that I wasn't into books as much as I used to be. It was through booktube and channels like yours that I found my groove in reading again! I don't do it daily or anything, but I've read like 10 books this year and that's huge for me! Five words for what books mean to me: Dream, Escape, Calm, Love, and Warm

I really enjoy your channel 💞 it’s amazing and your voice is so soothing and clear, so it’s easy to listen to you as English is not my first language

Watching you talk about books, made my love for books return from the dead. Starting uni, I forgot what it was like to be on the edge of seat while turning the pages fast to get to the end. I was reading manga online, but ai forgot how it feels to turn the pages on real books. In only the last few months I read more books than in last 5 years :) And I can't thank you enough for bringing back my love for reading! ♥️

I love how you got your husband into reading, I started doing the same with my wife recently... I said hey, just let me read a book to you. We are currently reading little mermaid and other fairy tales. 😌

Ok, now I need to try the "read-my-favorite-book-as-a-gift" strategy, because my husband doesn't see the point of reading a book unless we experience it together. He prefers being read to than reading for himself, and it makes me mad because some books are just so intimate, it just doesn't feel right to read them out loud! Now we're working through Death on The Nile (only 2 chapters in, we don't read it everyday) and I can't wait to read him The Giver (I read it twice already but I really don't get tired of it, the themes explored are deep enough and I love it ^^). I try reading him relatively short books because overdescriptive ones tire him quickly enough.

Such a cute story about your husband! Mine definitely reads a lot more now than he did when we met, especially fiction (he’s more of a non-fiction reader). He lets me choose every other fiction book he reads so I’ve been getting him to read my favorites, too. Our husbands rock. 😄

My wife is actually the reader. She'll read I'll ask her what happened in her book that day. It's a good system. If I'm listening to a book she'll usually ask me the same.

I grew up in Yosemite so trust me - I feel you in the small town! Great video, Merphy. I totally agree with loving hard copies the most and trying to carve out at least one or two hours a day as well. I struggle with the audiobooks but I’m working on trying to get it in more. I wish I could read more in the afternoon but I usually get it out of the way in the morning

I am also dyslexic and though I love and prefer physical books, books on my Kindle are easier for me to read. I think 1 because there is less space for my eyes to roam and 2 I can use Open Dyslexic font and I can adjust the size and spacing of the font. If you haven't used Open Dyslexic font yet, anyone out there who is dyslexic or even if you aren't, I highly suggest it. I am a Special Ed teacher and I just find it fascinating how many different ways something like dyslexia can present depending on the person.

Well, you’ve kind of turned me into a reader too... not quite, but kind of. I was a VERY avid reader as a child and in my early teenage years, but as school progressed and college came along, there was the internet, and other kinds of entertainment and, especially during college, I didn’t have time to read anything that wasn’t FOR college (granted, I majored in English, so I still read a ton of literature), and after I graduated I simply didn’t read anymore. I guess I was tired. I went for years without reading a single book. Then in 2017 I decided that I wanted to go back to reading and I tried. I read 6 books that year and it was amazing. I read three during the course of the year, and then my aunt gave me The Hunger Games trilogy for Christmas and I had never read it before... what happened: in 4 days, before New Year’s Eve, I was done with them all! hahaha In 2018 I found your channel through your Harry Potter unpopular opinions (or plot holes?, I don’t remember) video and subscribed and since then I have bought so many books and read so much more, and found so many other booktubers (and become a Sanderson fan, obviously). So, thanks a lot!

I used to love going to bookstores, usually Barnes and Nobles, and hang out for a couple hours with a friend or two. But ever since I started having foot pain that got cut from my social activities. Now I buy all ebooks. I love having a library in my hands. I used to LOVE my Nook with the E-ink technology. But after that got stolen I just got used to using my tablet. I'm not reading all year long. But when I am it's usually while I'm eating and an hour or two before I go to sleep. Which with great books sometimes turns into 3 or 4 hrs and I'm lights out in the middle of the night. Damn You Sanderson!!!! =)

I read several books at the same time and make sure always to have a novel, a nonfiction book, and an anthology or collection, with genres according to mood.

My friends would probably say quite the opposite (and stop there ONLY if they were feeling generous). But I've had this thought several times now watching Merphy's videos. Dislexic as well when I was young I was given color gels to create a different background to the black text. I had issues with digital readers as well and found night viewing helps a lot ( white text on black background). I read a lot more that way.

This is totally unrelated but I just unpacked my books (at last) and found one of my favourite book series which I think you would love its called The Seven Realms Series the first book is called The Demon King. After watching so many of your videos I think it fits your style completely, its Fantasy with compelling characters and a interesting magic system.

I cannot go out with a physical book, used to, but the books got smashed, so when I am out it is easier ebooks or audiobooks -yet, I hate ebooks. P.S. I am happy that you share dyslexia video, it is so inspiring to discuss reading personal issues. I have anxiety and sometimes I have fears and doubts that I will not be able to finish a book, it is agony, so audiobooks are comforting.

I always have a book with me. I've broke many a strap on my purses because they were always weighed down by books among other things. I just finished "The Innocent" by Harlan Coben. 4 stars. Currently reading "Bunny" by Mona Awad. Biggest Tome "Count of Monte Cristo" then "The Stand".

I'm trying to convert my bf into a reader. He has read a couple of books that I really enjoyed and when they click for him too its so fun! I love being able to discuss the story with him.

I don't have kids, and I commute to work. So I listen to audiobooks while I'm driving, cleaning the house, cooking, mowing the yard... and I physically read on my lunch break and during downtime right before bed. Therefore, I get through audiobooks much faster than physical books. I don't like e books either. If I'm reading i want to hold an an actual book.

4 years is my longest without picking up a book. I didnt have the drive to do it, id get 20-30pgs in and put the book down and never pick them back up. It wasn't until recently that ive forced myself to read that ive picked up reading again.

I have never been able to convert my brother into a reader no matter how hard I've tried. My sister already loves to read, but I was able to get her to be a fan of certain series she didn't think she'd like. So maybe didn't turn her into a reader, but into a reader of a specific series.

1) the longest I been without reading books is 3 months. I was passing bad times and I just wasn't able to concentrate to follow a story. 2) I have currently 30 ebooks and 2 audiobooks in my phone, and I carry everywhere my Korean-English dictionary.(does it count?) 3) If I don't like a ebook I delete it (1 stars) I have kept Physical books cause I don't have anyone to give them to. 4) a minimum of 20 minutes. 5)actually if I like a book a lot I tend to try to finish it in the same day. But I had scheduled my reading, around 3 hours a day. 6) audiobook time is at 10:45 to 11:45, ebook 5 to 6 pm and Physical book for at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. 7) I own 52 Physical books, 23 Audiobooks and 7.439 E books. (I love Physical books but they are too expensive for my pocket and I don't have space either) 8) Never. Cause I don't have anyone to talk about books. Actually most of the people around me hate books. (I really want to make book lovers friends) 9)The Royal Academy of Spanish Language Encyclopedic Dictionary. (From the very beginning to the end when I was 9 years old) 10) There is a book I used to have when I was little, I don't remember the title (reason why I can't find it) It was really big about ladylike code and stuff. I believe it was published in the 50s. It was gorgeous, it has the portraits of women from around the world. I been trying to find it for over 17 years but I can't. 11) I used to hate DNFing books for a very long time. I think the one I really disliked so much but I wasn't able to dnf cause it was for school it was a book of Borges. It was painful for me. 12) goals for 2021: read at least 100 books, complete my own book challenges and (maybe) start my own BookTube channel (cause I want to talk about books but I don't have anyone to do so) 13) Sadly no. 14)Doors to magical universes. Happiness.

I don't really bother with goals. When I recognise I need or want a change, I go ahead and do it or I start preparing for it and this applies to my reading. When I decided I wanted to read more classics, I went ahead and brought a few gothic ones because that seemed to match my taste and I have now read quite a number of classics. And that is just how I work. I don't bother waiting for the new year or the next year, because why would I?

I am an avid audiobook listener, (auditory learner so it just works for me) and I literally feel uncomfortable if I do not have a book that I am going through. Like not that I cannot go a day without listening but if I end a book and do not start another soon, I don’t feel right. I am addicted and I do not care!

I have probably gone through Harry Potter and Eragon about five times each because sometimes I just miss my friends, and if you call me crazy again I’ll eat your other eye.

It’s funny how different additions are different lengths. When you were talking about the longest book you’ve ever read, my first thought for myself was of “The Count of Monte Cristo”. And then you said your addition was 1200 pages long. Which sounded wrong to me. So I went and looked at mine out of curiosity. 2002 Modern Library addition: 1462 pages.

I think how much time I spend reading a day is dependent on whether I want to watch a movie that day or not. Or where I see the movie. If I'm watching a movie on my computer, then that usually accounts for my free time of the day (Not including the time I waste watching KZread). If I see a movie in the theater, I usually do that earlier in the day, and I'll usually read on the bus there. On the way back, I'm usually still processing the movie, so reading might be too much of a distraction. To me, books and movies are equals.

I would love if you got a chance to film in that bookshop (obviously after COVID ends)❤😊

Books I hated but finished anyway: quite a few "classic" books required for summer reading for high school English class, such as Moby Dick. I actually want to read War and Peace, but never got around to it. Many books that I consider "meh", I will finish anyway just to see how it ends. But I usually won't continue in the series.

I also have a difficult time reading ebooks. I was a delayed reader but hadn't considered that may be the reason why I struggle.

I almost never get rid of my books that I own, but then again, most the books I read are from the library, if I own a book, it's usually special.

nearly finished a booked called Veronica decides to die by paulo coelho which i think you would love, its more of a book where you take more meaning from the words and the story than enjoyment from whats going on
