The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond:
A very well-known Scottish song, which celebrates the beauty of the largest Scottish Loch (Lake) and it’s surroundings, but at the same time tells a sad tale. Interpretations are generally connected to the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 - assuming that the song depicts a conversation between two Scottish soldiers held captive by the English army. One version says one can return home (the high road), and the other will be executed and his soul will be transported back home to Scotland by the fairies (low road). Another says the survivor will take to the hills (high road), while the corpse of the executed soldier will be transported along the main (low) road. A song of love, loss and Scottish soul.
The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond Lyrics:
1) By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
Chorus:
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
2) ’Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond,
Where in soft purple hue, the hieland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.
Chorus:
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
*Instrumental -
3) The wee birdies sing and the wildflowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping.
But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again,
Though the waeful may cease frae their grieving.
Chorus:
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low,
And I'll be in Scotland a'fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

For those who don't understand this song I'll try to explain it in a short version. It's a Scottish song about two Scottish prisoners of war (English captives): One prisoner gets released, and the other prisoner is condemned and will be executed. None the less the condemned prisoner will never meet his true love on Loch Lomond again. The low road is underground (the grave) 6' above that is the high road. The executed prisoner will be in Scotland before his friend because he'll be there in spirit.

@@kmora7360 At the time in Scottish history when "Loch Lomond" was a new song, the United Kingdom (which united Scotland, England, and Wales) had already been formed. But the Highland Scots wanted a Scottish, not an English King to rule. Led by their Bonnie Prince Charlie (Prince Charles Edward Stuart) they attempted unsuccessfully to depose Britain's King George II. An army of 7,000 Highlanders were defeated on April 16, 1746 at the famous Battle of Culloden Moor. It is this same battle that indirectly gives rise to this beautiful song. After the battle, many Scottish soldiers were imprisoned within England's Carlisle Castle, near the border of Scotland. "Loch Lomond" tells the story of two Scottish soldiers who were so imprisoned. One of them was to be executed, while the other was to be set free. According to Celtic legend if someone dies in a foreign land, his spirit will travel to his homeland by "the low road" - the route for the souls of the dead. In the song, the spirit of the dead soldier shall arrive first, while the living soldier will take the "high road" over the mountains, to arrive afterwards. The song is from the point of view of the soldier who will be executed: When he sings, "ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road" in effect he is saying that you will return alive, and I will return in spirit. He remembers his happy past, "By yon bonnie banks ... where me and my true love were ever wont to gae [accustomed to go]" and sadly accepts his death "the broken heart it ken nae [knows no] second Spring again." www.manhattanbeachmusic.com/html/loch_lomond.html#:~:text=%22Loch%20Lomond%22%20tells%20the%20story,the%20souls%20of%20the%20dead

My Daddy moved to Australia when he was 18, 2 days later he joined the Australian army. He served his new nation fighting in Vietnam, he saw many atrocities and many many good friends die in Vietnam and then all his big group of friends die from rare cancers and undiagnosed PTSD. He is now on his death bed and even though he isn’t conscious as soon as I started playing this he started to move. It is breathtaking and I will always treasure this memory of playing it to him before he passes onto his eternal home. He loves Australia but has always loved Scotland and wore his kilt with pride at all his children’s weddings. Thank you for such a beautiful rendition.

Add a drum and the skirl of the pipes and you realize that you never really left in thee first place. And what a beautiful , uplifting version of The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond this is; one od the best I've ever heard, and believe me, I've heard many. I don't know how many times I've played this clip, but I just love to hear it, and to watch the vodeo. Beautiful song translated into Spanish.
