I don’t understand why American Christians constantly feel like they are being persecuted or prevented from practicing Christianity. No one has done anything to prevent any of us from living a humble Christ like life while we believe in our hearts and confess with our voices that Jesus Christ was the messiah. We just can’t force that view on others and we shouldn’t want to.

Actually, conservative Christians do have some legitimate complaints. For example, schools don't stop at teaching children that discrimination is wrong. They expose children to what are called "gay-positive" materials. These could bend a child's mind towards questioning the Bible's teaching on this subject. And teaching evolution as fact also is indoctrinating children with a religious view, since there are denominations that take Genesis literally as an article of their faith. Accomodating conservative Christians while also respecting everyone else requires threading a complicated path, and people on both sides aren't bothering to try to figure out how.

However the explosion of antisemitism on the left after October 7th really took me aback and while I don't see any of that in Biden himself, I see plenty of it in the party. For me, when I compare both parties and their leaders, there's still a clear difference on how they act, carry themselves, the message and the extent of hate and divisiveness that is being spread. Also, how reasonable and intelligent they are or at least come across, how much they actually seem to care about the country/ the people or rather about themselves and their own power. I do think Mr Trump may have been sent for a purpose. Not to be the great and glorious dictator/king they long for, who will win back political/ worldly power for extreme right wingers and conservative Evangelicals, to rule in perpetuity, but to teach Americans discernment - what good and evil truly mean in human behaviour. IIRC, many people in Jesus's time also hoped for a Messiah - an anointed one - who would take a leading role politically and maybe even militarily in freeing the Jews from Roman occupation and leading them out of that subservience to political sovereignty. But Jesus never showed any inclination to do this; instead he taught them how to liberate their own souls through love and thus find the true Kingdom of Heaven within, beyond worldly desires and fears.

You are so right! As I taught through the Bible chronologically, it occurred to me that through all the Judges and then to King David, the plotline was asking, "who can deliver God's people to get us back to a right relationship with God?" Every time the people thought, "Here is our deliverer!" Some of the Judges (Deborah, for example) were very good, but were temporary. Many of the Judges weren't even that good. So maybe a king was needed? Saul was thought to finally be "it" as Israel's first king. But he didn't live up to the task either. Then came David, a "man after God's own heart" and the reader might think "finally! Here's the Deliverer!" But David couldn't live up to the task either. He sinned greatly and though he repented, his life (and reign) were never the same again. If David couldn't live up to being God's Deliverer, then who possibly could? It all points to Jesus, as you say. Jesus is our Deliverer. He did not sin, and he completely and thoroughly saved and delivered us. Anyone who wants to point back to David or anyone else from the Old Testament is ignoring the whole point of God's plotline through the Old Testament. The point, as the Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians, is that the Law from the Old Testament and nobody from the Old Testament period can save us. Only Jesus can. And he did. So no, there is absolutely no reason to go back. We should keep moving forward, with Jesus.

Saul the heretic was a pawn used by Roman officers to trick Caesar into believing the Jews had finally converted to accept the sun and the virgin goddess. They killed him because he was going senile and spilling the beans. If you actually read all of the books of the Bible, not just the ones the Roman Catholics allow you to read… You will find this out because Jesus will tell you. In one of the lost books of the Bible Jesus flat out says that Saul the apostate will lead most of his people astray, almost to the last one and only handful will stay on the righteous path. And this was the pretext for his other comments about many will be called, but few will be chosen. Christians read that all the time and they think every single one of them is the few, when every single one is the definition of many. Jesus also says that the path is very narrow, and only a few people will be able to walk it, and this was another reference to that prophecy that Saul was going to lead everybody astray, and only a few people will actually reject Paul and throw away the Roman garbage and the Trinity garbage and get back to ancient Judaism that Jesus actually taught.

When I hear people telling me that the former president is "God's chosen leader", I think of the nation of Israel at the end of the era of the judges crying out to God saying, "We want a king, like all the other nations have." Samuel relayed God's reply, "A king will tax you heavily, and he will claim your daughters as his wives, and he will conscript your sons for his army." But the people continued to cry out, and God relented and allowed them to have a king. Fast-forward a hundred years or a bit more, into the books of 1 King and 2 Kings, when we see repeatedly, "...and King XXX did evil in the sight of God." And those kings continued to do evil, and to lead Israel into evil, and to ignore the warnings of the prophets to repent of their evil, until God allowed Babylon to take Israel into captivity. I think this is much closer to the reality of our situation.

Followers of organized religions learn from an early age to submit to authority and to place faith over logic. Sorry Ed, you are one of the good ones, but through out history organized religions have abused faith to commit atrocities that are beyond the pale. The Crusades, Manifest Destiny, and so many others it is hard to count. Every time they turn Christ's love into a militant military type aggression it ends badly. Yet the Trump followers are not happy with a loving Christ, they are demanding a militant Warrior Christ which never existed. Another example of Man creating God in his own image. Oops!

There is imperfect, which we all are to greater or lesser extents, and there is evil. The difference between the two are the fruits of their words and their lives on themselves and others. Someone like Jimmy Carter would be the first to say he’s imperfect but his service to humanity is inspirational. His example urges us to be better. Trump influences his followers to degrade themselves for him. It’s not all him, people are responsible for themselves, but his words and his actions normalize hatred, bigotry, vengefulness, violence, none of them fruits of the spirit. Ms Owens is profoundly mistaken.

IF God chose Trump to push back against evil, it was to show us the evil and to do better, get rid of corruption and bigotry. It was NOT so HE could get rid of the evil. And as with most lessons, until it’s figured out, we will just be shown more and more evil until we learn not to govern criminals power.

Thank you Rev Ed. I always feel at Peace after listening to you. And I really feel when you say the prayer at the end. 🇬🇧 I was brought up C of E, I’m not overly religious but I quietly have faith. And I do remember the teachings that God sent his only Son to save us. We are saved already. The rest is up to us ALL. Not an imperfect man. We’re not that felons ‘children’ Over here in England it seems ridiculous that so called christians *small case* appear to believe this. Have they forgot the teachings? Don’t they know their Bible? I do hope and pray that Americans will prevail over this time in their history. I believe they will ❤️

Thank you for sharing your wisdom.. One thing, you stressed how vital it is to have strength to do God's work. I have pondered this alot in my 63 years on this rock. A few years back, during a particularly dark period in my life, I realized that when I asked God to give me strength, most often I didn't know what to do with it. That was the starting point of my greatest spiritual growth, as I realized I had to as Him to Be My Strength. So when we are faced with the struggles of doing the Lord's work (whatever it may be), we don't have to concern ourselves with plowing through our own weakness to find some inner hidden strength. God is our strength. Literally and figuratively. Just a thought.

I could be wrong, but it appears that the Fundamentalists constant reference to the Old Testament doesn't sound mistaken. By that I mean, it appears to me that they sound like they wish to return to Old Testament Government with cherry picked Jesus, or am I wrong?

Jesus isn't much use to those who seek earthly power, so they need to harken back to the Old Testament.

Unfortunately, it is written like a praise song and is very catchy and swayable. With a bit more drum-- quite danceable. That is what makes it so dangerous and great for a cult.

Someday the Trump nightmare will be over. We must stop giving him the attention that he craves. His hate speeches are very eloquent and heartfelt. He has all the best words but it is up to us to make a sentence out of them.

Dude I've had a couple of stints in Church and maybe it's an excuse but the exercise of Church didn't give me what it obviously gives you. I have always tried lived as a good person, I can be profane at times and have moments when I don't give my wife the consideration she deserves but do I walk with Christ? No I won't say that but have always tried kept his teachings in my heart and in my interactions but of course it isn't always perfect. I just wanted to say your post bring me a peace that is needed from time to time. Thank you.
