The Bizarre 'Ear Tablets' of the Great Sphinx of Egypt | Ancient Architects

When we think of stone stele of Ancient Egypt, we think of hieroglyphic writing, depictions of gods, kings, and sacred animals, so imagine finding a stele with a depiction of a giant ear?
It doesn’t seem like your average Ancient Egyptian artefact, but this isn’t actually a one off; it was found amongst dozens of ear stele, and amazingly, they were found around the Great Sphinx of Giza.
Whilst excavating in the 1930s, Dr Selim Hasan found numerous examples in and around the New Kingdom Sphinx Temple of Amenhotep II, and also the Sphinx monument itself.
They really are some of the most interesting artefacts I’ve come across in my research. But how were they used? What were they for? Watch this video to find out.

Ok, lests see something, May was the one directed to reuse pieces of the Pyramid to make a temple, which put everything made in that era in doubt of the date in a few geoglyphs. You add this to the lot of cartouches in the same statue that is supposed to be Ramses(by example) and pile a lot of evidence that most of the stuff was made so much time before them that they didn't care because they weren't not even far related to the builders contrary of what archeologists tell us today. A clue that this is a family mater is in this video you saying that these tablets can be family-made, attachment was important for the Egyptians. Nice video...

The only question is - was it the Greek Oligarchs ruling the "French" Empire or the Greek Oligarchs ruling the "British" Empire who came up with this ridiculous idea of a nonsense. They are certainly in cahoots when it comes to manufacturing "Egypt" and its "artefacts".

Maybe the sphynx was used as a public bulletin board, like a physical version of an ancient social media app, and the ear inside of a rectangle was its corporate logo. Rich people could sponsor a tablet, to tweet at the gods, in exchange for providing financial support for the physical app's operations budget. Or, maybe the old word for "sphynx" was close to the old word for "ear", so there was a cult and ritual that played upon that? But, I thought these were found elsewhere besides the sphynx, no? Truth be told, I have no idea why the tablets were carved. I've seen many Egyptian eye carvings... each eye separately - sometimes only a right eye, and sometimes it's a left eye. I always assumed that was in relation to the ancient belief that the eyes could project a force. But I've never heard of giving someone the "evil ear", so IDK WTH the ear tablets really are. I can't imagine the pharoah climbing up some royal ladder, to reach the sphynx's ear, so as to pray right into it, as if the gods are half deaf, and you have to shout into their ear. But, you never know... I've learned many things that I couldn't imagine previously. OTOH, some silly-seeming stuff turned out to be silly FR, so you never know. It would help if someone found an actual ancient depiction or description of the ear tablets' function or meaning. Thanks for the video.

He would not have needed a ladder. For most of the time the Sphinx has existed it was just a head. Somehow the body was buried, and they did not know there was a body, and the body was discovered by the ancient Egyptians. Then the body got buried again, and remained buried till 1817 when the chest was found, and then the rest of the body was found in 1887. So we know of two times the Sphinx body was discovered, once in ancient times, and once in the 19th century. That is why all the pictures of the Sphinx before the 19th century just show a head. Crazy that even the ancient Egyptians thought it was just a head till they discovered the body, and we also thought it was just a head for thousands of years. You would think they would have kept in clean after building it, but they let it get buried, then when it got buried the next generation thought it was just a head, then they let it get buried again. Then we found the chest, and I guess we thought it was just a head and chest, and it took 70 more years to realize it was an entire body. Nonetheless, most pharaohs would have only seen the head, and would not have needed a ladder. Just look up Sphinx 18th century, and you will see some drawings, and you will notice it is just a head and no body.

Religions generally include concerns about getting the god(s) to hear the worshiper's prayers. In Japan, at a Shinto temple you clap your hands twice in quick succession before praying. I was told that you clap twice because clapping just once might not be noticed by the god, but that you only clapped twice because clapping more than that might anger the god.

Those ear tablets remind me of something I observed on my travels to Europe. Many of my relatives were Catholic, and the American churches were, I discovered, different from European ones. In addition to other differences the ear tablets remind me of an ancient custom that has continued into the present [at least in the East and South]. People suffering from an illness or imperfection in a body part would obtain an image [in ancient times a model or ceramic/stucco plate, but in more recent times a metal plate], and submit it in a temple for the attention of the god to the problem. In Greece and Italy I was shocked to find such things in churches, more commonly in Greece. The messages/offerings were stamped in metal and were about the size of a credit card. Frankly this superstitious practice of communicating with a god that needs pictures to understand your problem was quite startling and off-putting, and, AFAIK, is unknown on this side of the Atlantic in the US mainstream. Isn't it interesting that such customs* are not only centuries but millennia old? Thanks for another extremely interesting video on Ancient Egypt that sheds light on something that has lasted down to the present. Your work is, as always, excellent, informative and interesting Matt! *On second thought, I should state that the ear in Egypt may have been symbolic of the deity hearing the prayer, rather than, as in later times, signifying a hearing or other ear problem needing divine attention.

These are very interesting. I can totally imagine that these tablets, once completed, would become focii for prayers whether they were located. It would thus be an honor to create such tablets and have it as a centerpiece of a smaller shrine or as a donation to a temple where it might lie alongside others. Larger temples would tend to collect more ear tablets and a god's prominence would vary as fashions shifted or pharaoh promoted one or another god. I also agree that the notch below the Sphinx ear might have performed some function in allowing either pharaoh or some high priest closer to the god in a similar way that other religions had special places or exclusive rituals for spiritual leaders. Though I had seen photos, I did not know much about ear tablets until now, so thank you for sharing them and their potential functions with us.

Thank you for the respectful approach to understanding the significance of the Egyptian religion to their people. I've always held that as a human activity, religion persists in order to give us meaning and celebrate the loves and losses in between birth and death.

i think you might be on to something here.. ladder to the Sphinx's ear.. thought the same thing myself as you were talking about the ear tablets found around the statue before hand it just makes sence the sphinx is the keeper of time and secrets.. (even the IDEA of the Hall of Records alone)

Great vid!! Never heard of all the ear tablets. There seems to be a hole under the ear on the right side as well. Not as pronounced as the left side. The beard was found between the paws of the lion. Beard attachement holes seems a pretty strong hypothesis. Why would they make a hole under the ear when you can talk directly into the ear?

Reminds me of the right and left eyes of Horus. The Egyptians seemed to understand there was the logical (solar) and intuitive (lunar) sides of the brain or psyche. Maybe this applied to the ears as well. Interesting idea that the ears would help the Gods to hear humans.
