The Milky Way in Ancient Egyptian Mythology | Ancient Architects

The band is of course our galaxy, the Milky Way, and it’s been viewed by cultures in many different ways, from a celestial river to take away departing spirits, to the birthplace of angels.
But how the Ancient Egyptians viewed the Milky Way has been a mystery, even with the countless written records left and with decades of research and study.
Well, Dr. Or Graur, an Associate Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Portsmouth, and a Research Associate at the American Museum of Natural History, believes he found the answer. He’s found a link between the ancient Egyptian goddess, Nut, and the Milky Way galaxy.

So sad most people will never get to look up at night and see the Milky Way due to light pollution. When I was in the navy I used to sneak out on deck at night when we were at sea running lights out and stare up at that big weird light show.

When I was a kid myself and some family members took a trip to the New Mexico desert to visit a relative. Literally in the middle of no where. I will never forget what the night sky looked like that night. Basically, what is shown at the 8:30 mark of the video is what we saw but with our own eyes.

Way back in my younger days I worked in oil exploration in the middle of the Sahara. We had to do astro positioning on moonless nights and spent hours in the middle of the desert, miles from any light pollution. The night sky was stunning. As my eyes adapted over an hour or so I could see more and more stars. The Milky Way appeared to be solid with stars, arching right across the sky. What was really odd was the sharp cut off at the horizon and blackness below. I could literally (in the true sense of the word) not see anything if I looked down. Just blackness.

the oldest sky deities from predynastic times are: 1. Sopdu (= the star); night deity in shape of a recumbent falcon 2. Aker (= hidden beneath); death deity in shape of a recumbent lion 3. Nemtj (= traveller); depicted as a falcon on a barq reminiscent of a crescent moon sickle. 4. Akhtj (= shimmer; divine glow); predynastic sun deity of the morning- and evening sky. he was depicted as a northern bald ibis.

The ancient Egyptians thought they were a star. Once their star set on the horizon in the west they died. 70 days later their star would arise in the East. Their BaBird Soul would look for its mummy to reunite and maintain life. The Milky Way Cut the sky in half North To South. The sun East to West. They believed that Egypt was a mirror of the sky and the Milky Way represented the Nile. The sky was fluid, that is why they used solar boats in their representations. All Egyptians lived on the East side of the Nile as the West was for the land of the deceased. The Egyptians were the only ancient civilization that knew there was 365 1/4 days in a year; thus they all knew their birthdays! Abu Simbel is proof of this.

The Mayans knew the solar year too: "... The Classic Maya understood many astronomical phenomena: for example, their estimate of the length of the synodic month was more accurate than Ptolemy's,[1] and their calculation of the length of the tropical solar year was more accurate than that of the Spanish when the latter first arrived..."

The Maya sacred calendar is called Tzolk'in in Yucatec Mayan and Chol Q'ij in K'iche' Mayan. This calendar is NOT divided into months. Instead, it is made from a succession of 20 day glyphs in combination with the numbers 1 to 13, and produces 260 unique days, not 365 1/4.

the ancient egyptian's concept of human"s life essence is very complex and many-layered. the ancient egyptians believed that the Ba (= soul) travelled between this world and the yonder side. the Akh (= spirit) would return to the stars. and the Ka (= life force) would fade away over time. last not least, the Schut (= shadow) would wander the world of living and soon fade away, too.

When I was looking into what the Nazca Lines were really like [despite the phony baloney descriptions and theories of Error von Dummkopf and others of that ilk], and what they might mean, I was surprised at the difference between the views of Europe and the native people. Firstly, the sky looks very different South of the Equator, because the same stars are not visible. Secondly, it was reported that whereas we make up astrological alignments of stars, they look at the spaces, that concept is somewhat difficult to grasp, like Hopi language's "tenses" referring to spatial location rather than time. The upshot is that, considering that the relative positions of stars is known to have shifted in 2,000+ years, artificial lines drawn between stars, i.e. constellations, are not real. Once again, Matt, you have fairly described a theory, and have included necessary cautions about ascribing specifics with inadequate proof. It is true that the sun, moon and specific stars are prominent and easily identifiable, with characteristics that likely have similar meanings over time. The Egyptians, as noted, have assigned different meanings to the same gods, and similar meanings to different gods, thus making caution advisable. Then of course Egyptians occasionally merged gods, like Amun + Ra = Amunrah, etc. Thanks Matt for another thought provoking video!

The biggest error most scholars make when they read the myths and legends of our ancient ancestors is to ASSUME that they are somehow literal--that the people who wrote them and repeated them actually BELIEVED them to be true and accurate. This is the case with reading too much into the head, butt, and arms of Nut. Instead of seeing the Milky Way as a personification of Nut, you should be reading the stories of Nut to learn more about what the Egyptians thought about the three main realms--The Sky Realm (the Heavens), The Earth Realm (the land we live on in all its manifest forms), and the Nether Realm (the side of the earth the Egyptians could not see, but somehow guessed was there; did they REALLY believe Nut "swallowed" the sun, moon, and stars and then gave birth to them every morning? Given the undeniable fact that they Egyptians had figured out so much about astronomy and their place on the earth, it is more probable that they considered these stories "just so" stories--easy explanations for why things are the way they are. The other fact is that the Egyptians thought about life a lot, and it is highly probable that they truly did believe that we move between realms--being constantly born and reborn into new levels of existence--forever. I don't talk much about Nut in my book, Pitiless Bronze: A Postpatriarchal Examination of Prepatriarchal Cultures, but I do discuss how so many cultures around the world believed in these three Realms of existence.

The links between Sumerian civilization and Ancient Egypt should get more attention. It would tell a lot about predynastic evolution of civilization. Also earlier yet civilizations on the Black Sea must be part of tracing civilzation back towards its beginning. Varna kingdom seems the most advanced around 4600 BC. The extent of civilization threads through the whole region (pre dynastic Ethiopia, Black Sea, Sumerian cities on the Red Sea and stretching westward, Egypt, Minoan on eastern half of Mediterranean Sea.). The hanging gardens of Babylon had bananas that must have come from much farther east.

Have been to Egypt 2 times; we did a Nile cruise in 2007 and a year later we stayed on the red sea coast and visited the pyramids during these days. I was expecting beautiful night skies but even when clear, there was no impressive night sky, certainly not a visible the milky way. We all wondered why. Was not air polution, because there were no big cities close by. Might be that the evaporation of Nile (or sea) water created a hazy atmosphere. We were there in the winter. Evaporation would be lowest of the year. I have seen the milky way in hot dry areas of the world, so I wonder if the ancient Egyptians could even see the milky way that clear.

Light pollution is a nasty thing. Spreading from human dwellings, it reaches out very far. 100 miles of no civilization is often needed, to actually overcome this problem. The Nile is never far enough away. The Red Sea usually is also way to close to enable you to see the Milkey Way nowadays. But yes, clouds (in whatever type, shape of form) can also limit this.

it seems pretty obvious to me that nut represents the ecliptic and not the galactic plane. they used the positions of the planets to mark the time so the ecliptic plane is something familiar and important to the culture.
