When did California stop being an island? It took more exploration, but by 1747 King Ferdinand VI of Spain was convinced. He issued a decree stating that California was -- once and for all -- not an island. It took another century for cartographers to completely abandon the notion.

The map is not entirely a mistake since the today's California entire Central Valley was once one of the largest lakes on the continent. If explorers saw this lake (which was brackish in some parts) they could easily have thought that California was an island. Though this large lake is almost completely gone today, it's remnants & deposits are why California is the most agriculturally prolific land in the world today.

The California basin has been filled 15 times in a certain amount of time, I forget how long it was. As a Californian I find it interesting.
I studied Californian history in college. I had one excellent class that was centered on the idea that California is, in fact, an island, in spite of being quite firmly attached to North America. Politically, historically, culturally, ecologically, geologically, it is separated from the rest of the continent. It was home to far and away the most cultural and linguistic diversity in pre-contact North America. It’s home to a dizzying array of endemic and unique species. It’s charted a separate political course since joining the Union. And it’s hard to get to. California is an island, even though it’s also not.

Good moment to remind you all that the original California is actually Baja California. American California was originally called Higher California for being the territory north of California, but since it became the popular one, the old California changed its name to Southern California. The California that all those legends and myths refer to and the one that was mistaken for an island for centuries, is actually Baja California.

So, if you're a map guy, I know that you know that cartographers were notorious for cheating by copying other cartographer's maps. It only took one guy to accidently get it wrong,(or lie). Who can afford to go check? They eventually started placing islands that didn't exist so they could see who was copying their legit work. #sandyislanddoesntexist
@chelloho

Fun fact: cartographers still do that to this day, but with fake parks, streets, sometimes entire towns.
@GeographyGeek
Жыл бұрын
There were no copyright laws during the Island of California days. It's not that they cheated as much as professional cartographers were not typically explorers and so they relied on the accounts of others which included from other nations and maps. Sometimes they were not sure was correct but went with what seemed like the most credible theory. It wasn't brought up in the video but it's common to see the same cartographer have maps published in the same few years that actually contradict each other.

@@ColFlustered As sailors (I'm retired Navy) we know our navigation extremely well. That means we can sail along the coast of somewhere and take sightings. We know where we are so we can tell where something else is if we can see it. By plotting those sighting out we can create maps. Not only did those sail era sailors plot the land, they also charted the off shore soundings (depths) and seabed material (for anchoring). It's just hard work but very doable if you got your navigation skills. Fair winds!

Bittersweet feelings from this video. As a Mexican with great memories when I lived in Ensenada, Baja California I really enjoyed understanding why the peninsula was drawn as an island for so long. I was first introduced to it in a historical museum in Ensenada and I couldn't understand how Baja California passed from an island to a peninsula to an island again. On the other hand, kinda sad that these feelings of the "magic" land of success are associated nowadays only with American California. Don't get me wrong. Baja California is a beautiful place. I felt in love with all it's ecosystems. However, passing the border from Tijuana to San Diego always left me with a kinda sad feeling. Baja California and California split exactly the developing countries of Latin America and the first world. You can feel the economical consequences of history right there.

CA will shift north over time. Long after the cities have ground o dust, what was once LA will be a suburb of Seattle. But yeah, for a long time people thought it would separate, but the faults are wrong for that. San Andreas is a transform fault, with right-lateral strike slip, ie, its shifting along north south axis, with the pacific plate shifting northerly along the slower moving NA plate. Unlike the movies, we wont become an island. Caveat: there is some geological evidence that Baja may split off as there is a smaller fault with an east/west bearing around the salton sea spreading center. This could force baja to split away from CA itself

Additional comment; the fact that it was the people of my own country (the Dutch) that re-created the myth of it being an island is amazingly funny.
Been watching Johnny forever those borders days!!! Glad he getting so much respect now! Excited for this!

Wow thanks Nimroz!
Awesome Sauce on this Video!!
I am so glad you have this platform.
I love how you use social media jargon to explain maps of all things. You'd be a great teacher Harry. I bet lots of kids would remember their classes to the T if they were told in a similiar fashion, adults included of course. Cheers!
One thing I love about your videos, is that you also have a deep seeded appreciation for maps, both as objects by which we teach other aspects of history, culture, etc. but also as objects of artistic beauty by themselves. From one map lover to another, I salute you sir.
This was one of the most interesting pieces of independent content I have ever watched. Thank you.
The sponsor segment was hilarious! I actually watched it. The look on that guy's face was awesome.
6:12 I would've died if he said Okay but who asked 💀
This was surprisingly one of Johnny Harris's most entertaining videos.
Loved this. How about something about the Great Basin and prehistoric Lake Bonneville
ty for annotations fixing your mistakes and simplifications :D
The internet can take all the potshots they want. They've never had to make informative and entertaining content regularly. It's good to have Johnny Harris doing what he does best!

"Entertaining" yes "Informative" that's debatable, selective history perhaps but yeah good to have a content creator like him. I like your channel too! Can't stand the west, love to see you guys succeed

By potshots do you mean showing damn near everything he says is wrong? Lmfao
How convenient, literally made a video about this a week ago haha!
Damn you are so dope with the mapping and describing things that doesn’t have any attention or may be nobody has ever noticed that you do.Keep exploring.👍👍
Love your videos, sick animations man
As a critic of your second to last video, I would like to say thank you for making the improvements to your storytelling process. I know firsthand the importance of making relatable and interesting stories to help get people to learn history, and I also know how hard it is to make sure things are as accurate as possible considering that. Thank you for being willing to change to create better, more accurate, and highier quality videos. Please keep up this progress because we definitely appreciate it!

Except after saying that they have no evidence that Cortez is reading this book... The storytelling hinges on Cortez reading a book there is no evidence to suggest he read. I'm not sure why he can't tell an interesting story without needing to make things up...

Roadtriping baja is awesome.. many many things to see from amazing beaches, mountains, cave paintings, old gold mines, a Gustave eiffel church, etc..
Imagine a corporate drone just sitting next to you on a train and telling you a live advertisement. Also isn't the mythical california just the place wonder woman comes from?
What an amazing storyteller you are, Johnny. You (and your team) have the skills to make any topic extremely interesting. I am never disappointed with you all.
14:31 Not old John Townsends 😂 He'd be a good fit for a 18th century mapping expedition.
What a great video. Thanks!
Congratulations, sir. You are officially the first to not make me skip an in video ad. I don’t care if it was or wasn’t staged, that was just great, lmao. Also loved the whole video of course!
The music, the visuals, the maps and most importantly the superbly delivered information!! This is why I enjoy Johnny Harris videos especially as a Geography student.
I lOVE this retro style of editing and video design you use and share with channels like Vox so much! 🥰 The organic motion graphic, the analogue visual style elements. Just everything.

Yes there are. And they where to be as historically authentic made by government.
1:56 awesome shots of the metro! Please do more about trains and public transport ❤️ this topic is also related to geography, so...
I absolutely love watching your videos, Johnny! There are so many things that we do not know about and I appreciate your time and effort in making us understand them in such a simple and fun way. Thank you so much! Always looking forward to your videos :)
Johnny's video-editing skills continue to amaze me with every single video! I'm sure it's a great inspiration for future video creators.
Great video!
I don't know how you do it but every single one of your in-depth videos catch and hold my attention from start to finish. So much respect for your work.

Hey Johnny, I was wondering if you ever heard of the mythical Irish island of Brasil (sometimes Hy-Brasil), which is allegedly unrelated to modern day Brazil, but which was also included in some maps as being a real place? If not, you could also check it out, especially the book "Hy Brasil: The Metamorphosis of an Island: From Cartographic Error to Celtic Elysium" by Barbara Freitag
Brilliant video!
You did a much better job than I did at covering this a few years ago. Amazing video as always!
