The Bible is Not the Word of God | Atheist Experience

Tracie and Matt discuss why the Bible is not the Word of God, but put together and edited by men.
This is an abbreviated segment from The Atheist Experience #483 of January 14, 2007 (topic: "Old Testament Gods"), with Matt Dillahunty and co-host Tracie Harris.

    Teaching the history of religions to children is one thing. Teaching a specific religion as the word of a God is abuse.

  • 4 жыл бұрын

    More and More, Geoffthebull, I believe this and agree with you. LOOK AT THE RESULTS of teaching children that ONLY the buybull is the word of God and ALL OTHER spiritual beliefs and all other philosophies are evil, ignorant and won't improve society. But these other things do!! Critical thinking, science and asking questions is healthy. But for centuries, as Christopher Hitchens as once said, people were intentionally and inadvertently KEPT IN THE DARK by church leaders...resulting in unnecessary suffering and wars and pain and discouragement.

    This is amazing. I have only became an atheist the last 2 years and watching this made me realise that I never questioned how the bible was compiled and formed. I didn't need to know that to become an atheist but I do find it amazing that I never questioned it. But then again as Tracy says this is instilled into you from a very early age so its not surprising that Christians never questions things like that.

    You know I started to wonder if maybe it wasn't like she said in the video, as far as how the Bible was put together. So I went to Christian websites and like always, they just gloss over how it was put together, not really going into detail. Then I found a documentary on how the books all got put into the Bible, and low and behold, it was like I was starting to think. But yeah, we are just told it magically got put together by the holy spirit. That some mysterious group of holy men put it together or something, told by angels on one stormy day, and what order they are to go in. Now I'm sort of like "CRAP!!!" in a way. Because I still believe in a God, but what do I do now? lol

    The hardest part is admitting you don't believe. I worked Sundays, had sex before marriage etc and didn't feel guilty about it even when I was religious because its not relevant anymore. If I was a true believer I would have never have done those mundane things that are apparently bad. I drifted away and before I knew it I was ready to admit that I was no longer a believer.

    Toxic Dogma No, I just can't agree with that. Not all religions are the same. The main three, Islam, Christianity and Judaism all have more in common than others. But they do have slightly different practices. And the many others that have been around much longer are all VERY different. In MANY ways. They all outdate the bigger three, and have many or sometimes no gods and goddesses. There is a big difference between organized religion and other paths.

    As far back as I can remember I never believed in god. I remember being very young in a store with my sister and I said god isn't real. She kinda consoled me and told me I shouldn't say that because people would get mad. My parents never told me what to believe, they just didn't talk about it at all. I remember asking my mom what church was like and she asked me if i wanted to go. However I declined because it didn't sound like a good place and Homer Simpson never wanted to go. So basically I was raised to think for myself and I have never even been able to even comprehend how there could even be a god. Christianity and any religion for that matter just seems so obviously fictional and makes Star Wars seem 100x more believable. So now whenever I see someone with a cross on or anything it makes me think they are delusional and somewhat unstable. I don't take anything they say seriously and avoid them. Its a prejudice I have because I cannot understand how a rational, critical thinker can believe in such absurdities.

    If the creator of the universe were to communicate to mankind through a book, surely the book would be filled with spiritually uplifting and enlightening stories rather than the brutal and bloody tales contained in the Old Testament. It would be written in a language everyone could understand and be simple, straightforward and completely free of ambiguity without the need for interpretation by God's supposed "chosen" prophets. Why did God choose to reveal himself in an obscure corner of the middle east when he could have waited a couple of thousand years and reached billions through the medium of television or via the internet? I'm sorry, but the Bible is no more the "Word of God" than last week's edition of the Beezer. The very idea is an absolute joke.

    As a fellow ex-theist, I can relate that a Christian doesn’t “quote the bible”, but rather we would “quote” the gist of what we were told in church, in Sunday school, in catholic school, among relatives, etc. For a Christian to say “the bible says” didn’t actually mean that the person had looked up that chunk of information in the bible, but rather was dutifully quoting what had been taught. It was presumed to be one in the same.

    Watching this in 2022. Great video. I got out of Christianity in 2017. Via Bible study. I always wondered who chose the books that went into the New Testament. I was always skeptical of the answer I got from basically any Christian leader. This video was made on 2007. I was still knee deep in Christianity. Do I regret it? No. Because I know the mindset of so many Christians as a result comparing how I felt about Christianity in 2007 and How I feel know. NOW! I give both of these presenters a standing ovation and don't disagree with them one bit. My 80+ year old Christian theologian friend my Christian parents. Still in Christianity. I cant even reason with them about it. THANK YOU "The Atheist Experience".

    I was never religious. I attended church because my parents made me do it to complete paperwork. I also attended religion in school, because it was mandatory, but I never cared about it. Once I reached the age of 18th, I dropped off. I have been always into astronomy, and at about age 20-25, I got even more into science and practiced critical thinking. It was the final nail in the coffin and there was no turning back! I learned a lot since then, also from this show! A lot of adults can't reason at all and have a hard time during logical arguments on mundane topics, not to mention religion. They commit basic fallacies such as strawman, etc. At one point, I was briefly under the mild influence of a religious girlfriend. From perspective of time I can say her arguments were laughable! ;) I heard HORROR stories from people that were deeply indoctrinated, though.

    Even when I was a 'born again christian' for a short while I had doubts deep down about it all and I had a lot of questions about contradictions in the bible etc, I just didn't know how to express those doubts effectively to other believers and my friends who believed to get them to ask the same questions, so when I tried, they put it down to my being 'confused by the devil' and being silly 'asking childish questions', I wasn't actually a child but I was at the time just a bit too young and inexperienced to stand my ground on it in those days so even though I'm sure that I was right to doubt the bible and ask those questions, I always ended up losing these arguments, of course, now I'm a lot older I wouldn't be such a pushover for them or anyone trying to shove the bible down my throat, I have to take some responsibility myself too because after all, it was my choice to go along with it even when I was unsure but I blame the bulk of it on being misled by people that I shouldn't have bothered to listen to. I know exactly where Matt is coming from because I was more or less the same, in my case it wasn't a fundamentalist church it was a pentecostal denomination that I got involved with, I had the same ambition though, I wanted to be a minister or pastor as they called it, I had the best of intentions in wanting to do what I thought was the right thing, namely spread the gospel but I needed to be 100% sure myself before I could comfortably tell others and this is where my doubts began to manifest themselves, I just had to speak up and try to express those doubts, it was partially the harsh way I was dealt with just because of asking questions that made me realise the whole thing was no good, anything that discourages a human being from thinking, reasoning, questioning is almost certainly always a very bad thing, the minute you hear anyone tell you 'don't question it just accept' take this as a classic sign that it's false, truth and reality will always stand up to any scrutiny, if god is really there then this god shouldn't have to depend on unquestioning faith to be effective, that's just absurd.

  • @georgeb00th2

    @georgeb00th2

    10 жыл бұрын

    God doesn't depend on our faith at all. We know we sin [Romans], we know we are alienated from God, it is at this point the atheist would say the feeling is culturally imposed make it go away by positively believing the feeling is not real, there is no God. Believing "I have not sinned" , or I make no mistakes, usually not effective in dealing with alienation, as atheists are usually moral. Those who repent, even the most reprobate, to God and turn from their sin find forgiveness and reconciliation. God's wrath against our sins was borne by Jesus on the cross and paid for in full (resurrection). The alienation wasn't just a feeling. PS> you only need a little faith, not a complete understanding of the universe.

    larry lommel Yes but the point I'm getting at is that this God has not confirmed his existence to me so I don't know for sure whether guilt is culturally imposed or God imposed, I have no way of knowing for sure until this God shows himself and confirms it to me, so far he has not, sure I could choose to believe it if I wanted to, I can choose to believe anything but what I can't do is rationally justify it, let's say for arguments sake this God does exist, is God prepared to give me a rational justification for me to believe he exists?, if so then that's all I'm asking for, I'm waiting!

    @BabyUcon. I never thought of it that way before. It makes very good sense in many ways though. I don't believe there is a god but, if there is this could be his way of sorting out the naturally immoral so called christians who follow everything in that stupid incomprehensible ancient fairy tale book written by M E N , NOT any god. Those stupid enough to waste every seventh day going to a church when their god is supposedly everywhere and praying and praising this character because this stupid book says this perfect being demands his followers do this idiotic crap says a lot about how stupid these followers must be to think any of that would be important to any sort of perfect being. Only a very vain and extremely flawed personality would expect any of that. If he was real then that may be his test of worthiness, if you're stupid enough to think such a being would really want them doing that crap then he's NOT perfect, he's not even remotely close to it. There we go, by logical thinking we've proven that religious people are the ones either going to this imagined "hell" or at the very least their NOT going to continue on in any form whilst decent athiests who do good whilst not expecting some sort of everlasting life will actually be the ones up there partying with your god and laughing at all the idiots who followed that old fairy tale.

    The word bible is a Greek-Latin word (biblos) [βίβλος] and it means "books." Its purpose, for catechism Greek-Latin word (katho) [κατηχέω] and it means "principals". So, the bible is a book of allegoric principals used to guide the christian beliefs as a religion and nowhere was it intended as a book derived from any "divine wisdom" nor to explain and define reality.

  • @SxVaNm345

    @SxVaNm345

    8 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you are mostly correct. "The Bible takes its name from the Latin Biblia (book or books) which comes from the Greek Ta Biblia (the books) [βίβλος] traced to the Phoenician port city of Gebal, known as Byblos to the Greeks. (Writing and books became associated with Byblos because it was an exporter of papyrus used in writing) and the Greek name for papyrus was bublos, linking the city with the written word. Although the Bible is often considered a single, cohesive, work, it is actually an anthology of ancient writings by many different authors over many centuries, 'in three different geographical locations' (My added words) which were collected in a single book. The Bible contains works of poetry, religious-themed narratives, 'actual historicity, parabolic morals, stories with basic key principles to help guide your life with, and learn from' (My added words once again lol) philosophical musings such as The Book of Ecclesiastes, epistles, and the apocalyptic masterpiece known as The Book of Revelation.": - This piece of information was taken from the first bit of writing, on the top part of the page from this website --> {www.ancient.eu/bible/.} As for the linguistic origin of the word 'catechism' (katho) [κατηχέω], while that is the historically correct origin of what this English word meant, that doesn't mean that is all the Bible is limited to. I mean, just because some certain linguistic origins of some certain man-made English words had a very specific definition... That doesn't mean anything else, other then just that. I am also not sure if catechism, was just entirely limited to just the Roman Catholic branch of the Christendom tree, at some point in history. But even if it was or wasn't, that still doesn't mean that was/is the whole or only meaning of the origin of the word 'catechism'. In a way, while this may also just be my own personal, and subjective opinion, I also think this is just you arguing over your own perspective, or interpretation of epistemological semantics. TL;DR, Long story shot: - The Holy Bible is *_STILL_* the morally objective (The standard dictionaries define good as moral excellence, in the very first definition of the word 'good'), and absolutely true (I say this because it is the only book, that corresponds and correlates well with reality to the 100 percentile) Word of God!

    Bruce Baker There are tremendous amount of accuracy and proof about it, but I guess it does not really matter on a person who is either A) not interested B) Just biased to what he believes in C) who acknowledges the truth but decided to go for the usual anyway.

    Ricoshe Ric Bias also applies to believers too. Figuring "yep, that's good evidence right there". When...it just aint. It's circular, or special pleading, or based solely on emotion, imagined voice or feelings, simple assertion, etc.

    (Romans 16:17-18) "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple."

    ***** What a load of pretentious rubbish. You still don't really have any proof of god, or proof of any of your claims being true! I'm not going to believe what someone says if you can't effectively back it up. Using the bible as evidence doesn't help, as you don't know the circumstances it was written, had you ever considered that the people who wrote it made up the stories and were just giving their idea on how they would like the world and its people to be? there are other variables which don't make it valid, so there is no point in quoting it. when you say you talk to god, you're actually talking to yourself. FAITH IS GULLIBILITY, it makes you accept everything at face value and not ask questions.

    ***** Well clearly you don't, because if you did you'd come to the conclusion that god and jesus aren't real, as there's no valid evidence to prove they are. Then you'd move on and continue with your life.

    "I looked up the passage, far enough you didn't misquote it i remembered wrong," Just the fact that you have the courage to say that, instead of dodging it and bringing up something else in the hopes I would forget (which I wouldn't, but still-) says much about you, sir/ma'am. I think deep down inside, you feel like it is somehow untrue, yet you have been into it for so long, you feel a loyalty to defend it. This is just my opinion, but that's the vibe I get. You also seem intelligent. Respect.

    To all of you non believers, I have a question. If you've read the bible? Then please explain to all believers how all of the prophecies are coming to pass right before our very eyes so how do you explain that? Also you said God didn't say right this word Gotti I got okay you're correct for the most part but in the Book of Revelations it was said to write to John the Revelator as I like to refer to it Jesus told John or an angel told John to write these things down.

    Santa and Jesus are the exact same thing. Parents use Santa to control kids (be nice or no gifts). The Church uses Jesus the exact same way (do what we say or go to hell). It's all about control....

    If you deny that your god had to be created, why can't you just deny that the Universe had to be created, like the rest of us? Because when you say everything had to be created, and that your god is everything, you're still not finished explaining where everything came from... What good is a story about creation if the story begins with the assumption that not everything has to be created? If you do not know where your god comes from, your story is telling exactly nothing about any beginning...

    this is a typical misunderstanding of christian ethics. notice i put the word guidebook in quotation marks. nt ethics is where the law of christ is written on the heart of believers and lived intrinstically. i suggest you look at the book of galatians in the nt, Paul explain the relationship of the church to the ot law there very well.

    I am not clear on how the Dead Sea Scrolls prove the Bible is not God's Word. Tracie does not elaborate. I cannot find anything online that touches on this - only that the Dead Sea Scrolls prove the accuracy of the Bible we currently have. Can anyone provide a good source for further investigation? Thanks~

    Parady of an old commercial: My god's better than your god, my god's better than yours, my god's better because I have faith, my god's better than yours. For various versions, substitute the word bible instead of the word god, same effect!

    Thus you can see the 2 surnames have quite distinctly different roles in society and origins. NB there has been further confusion created through emmigration of these names where by poor record keeping has resulted in addition of Ds and subtraction of Ds and other letters. Good Luck in finding the origin of your names as it is a rewarding journey.
