WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    In the US religions are not governed by the state and are allowed to adversely influence the society from a independent position of power. The fact that religions have managed to infiltrate their way into politics all the way to the top and corrupt the society through and through is a major reason for the religious weirdness that comes out of the US.

    Do not be so harsh - he does not know that this is nonsense. In his bubble that alll makes total sense, and after this onslaught of reality he will flee back into his bubble and forget all this. These people have been conditioned to not perceive certain things. When you have this strategy to set out your perception, you can live a happy and easy life in peace. Just as people here in Germany learned not to perceive certain things, to not look in certain directions, where jewish shops were taken over by christians and jewish families moved away or disappeared suddenly. Great effort was made by the regime to maintain normality, to keep people distracted. You could live a normal, harmless life, never seeing anything bad. They maintained that largely even throughout the war. Moves like "Die Feurzangenbowle"; "Münchhausen", "Große Freiheit Nr. 7" were produced far into the war, and are totally unpolitical, absolutely harmless, you can watch them with fun and do not need to have a bad conscience. That is the application of the same principle as that what christianity does.

  • @feedingravens

    @feedingravens

    John has ZERO own imagination. He believes what he is told is The Truth by the self-proclaimed mouthpieces of God on earth. He has no choice, he was persuaded that he will go to hell when he doubts anything, and he believes the word of God (spread through the mouthpieces) is perfect and true and so cannot be changed. He is not allowed to ponder over it, and was told that God's wisdom is beyond the human understanding. So it makes no sense to think about the teachings and think that you found flaws. Per definition there are none, you are just too dumb to know. The true wisdom is to understand you do not have to understand, you are just right like the Bible is right. And never doubt that. Then you can look down upon all others that say "That is full of blatantly obvious contradictions, I cannot understand that". Not thinking as virtue. Einstein's imagination was to think outside of the normal paths, that also means you know the path and when you go beyond, That you take on other viewpoints, other angles. John has one path he goes with Bible goggles, and he does not even know that there is anything else than that path. He is a two-dimensional being living on the surface of his christian bubble - the surface is endless, but the area of the surface is tiny. But unless you go into the third dimension and look at the surface of the bubble you live on from the outside, you will never see the limitations - and that there is much more to be discovered. But as two-dimensional being he has no ability to grasp this idea of a third dimension. He is happy with the two he knows. Hmm - I like that description, I think I will use it more often.

    Before Christianity or the Hebrew religion Hell was the place that everyone went to after dying, heaven was reserved exclusively for the gods alone. It wasn't until Zoroastrianism came on the scene that ordinary people were then allowed to go to heaven and Hell was reserved for the evil people. So Judaism, Christianity and Islam have all been influenced by the earlier monotheistic religion of Zoroastrianism whether they like it or not.

    The issue with hell is that there is literally no possible way to deserve to go there forever. Some people may deserve punishment, but eternal torture is the ultimate unfairness no matter what you've done. Even people like Hitler and Genghis Kahn don't deserve *eternal suffering.* Imagine being tortured so long you could watch the entire life cycle of the universe birthing and being destroyed by the hands of time trillions of times and still not being any closer to salvation than when you started. Why not just obliterate the souls of the damned? That would be more reasonable than the concept of hell is.

    When christians talk to me about the bible, i tell them "If I came to you and told you the way to paradise after death is the Easter Bunny. He brings warm fuzzy chocolate goodness forever, you just believe in the bunny and everything will work out". I then ask them what they think about what I said and after a couple of evasions they will admit it's silly. Then I tell them that when they talk to be about a god, it's the same as the Easter bunny story to me, and no matter what they try to pile onto that, it's just more Easter bunny nonsense.

    99% of people who ever existed fail to meet the biblical standard to avoid hell, including this caller but they are deluding themselves out of fear AND never even consider whether the entire concept is rational or supported by sufficient evidence to warrant belief.

    People who are praying will also claim that god has a plan and are allknowing, so praying is disrespecting their gods plan and ignoring that he already knows the thing they are praying for. And even when they claim that god has a plan they will still say that they have free will.

    It amazes me to think that Christians believe that a baby, straight out of the womb, covered in blood and slime, knows nothing, doesn't know right from left, doesn't know right from wrong, and is basically a blank slate, is doomed to hell right from the beginning unless someone intervenes to indoctrinate him and gets him to achieve salvation.

    Im wondering if the "zero deviation by 40 writers" might have been a reference to the King James Bible translation. Ive heard that pulled by some fundamentalist family members when arguing about Christianity. Essentially it boils down to an argument that the king james version HAS to be divinely inspired because 47 not 40 as the caller said) translated the bible independently under King James direction and they all perfectly matched each other. My counter is usually something along the lines of that tells me one of two more likely scenarios happened: 1. They were all really good scribes, or 2. Since King James was known to be a little head chopped off happy, the scribes were clever enough to crib notes from each other.

    The sad thing is, John will go home (if he isn't home already) and thank God for giving him the strength to battle these "heathens", confident and convinced that he was as accurate a promoter of The Word as he could be, while reminding himself to sprinkle in credit to God every now and then so as to not overinflate his ego. He might even say a half-hearted salvation prayer for the hosts, as the cherry on the top. I say these things because I was just as bad when I was a believer (Baptist specifically). This is how people think and argue when they begin the conversation already fully convinced of the truth of their claims, unwilling to bend or budge in any direction away from the one that's brought them comfort for so long.
