    I bought a set of 80's nearly 20 years ago after trying everything they had in the store. A bit of extra twinkle in the high end but the cleanest sound overall. Still my go-to set after all these years. Comfortable enough to wear all day.

    Just bought a pair of Hemphones myself, and my god I love them. I already own 325is Grados from 8 years ago so I knew what I was getting into, but the difference the wood housing makes, hemp specifically is just magical. I'm almost crazy enough to someday try and get PS2000e for the best of their lineup. But that's a huge leap and way more power from a headphone then I should ever need. That said, I'm going to try and get two of my music lover coworkers directed towards Grados, as music majors, they need these in their life.

    I've had my SR60i for 10 years now and has been a daily all its life. And they're not "babied" at all. I did a bass mod a year into owning it. Then I replaced the cable for a shorter one for practicality. Then I had to re-solder the cable a year after that because my sister who I pass it on to treated it like a disposable. Then I replaced the cable again for one with an L-plug a few years later. The headphone survived all that stuffing into cramped luggage, tropical weather, and heat from soldering and shell removal. I think it'll outlive me.

    I'm not even an audiophile but I really appreciate how you approach this sort of stuff. It's great to see such enthusiastic support for localised companies (I'm not even American, but I mean made in house kinda shit). I'm so tired of big brands- and even some small companies- shipping everything off to places like China for exploited labour just to save themselves some money. Especially when those savings are rarely passed to the consumer. I'm always down for supporting companies like Grado, where they seem to be making smart money saving decisions to help keep their costs reasonable. Wish I could get a pair of these, honestly, they remind me of old 1930s microphones. Look vintage as fuck.

  • @Spamhard

    @Spamhard

    @@thedoctor8527 I'd say that's a good thing for the company though. It means they're producing a good product that people want. Sucks that limited stock means their items are harder to come by, but they can only make what they're capable of. I still think it's the better option than exploiting workers in other countries. Maybe the increased buyers means they might be able to expand a little and produce more stock in the future. I've just seen a bunch of grados on amazon not far above stock price, so they don't seem too badly priced still.

    My stepdad and I are paramedics. He was one long before me, and all the 1970's sirens have kind of destroyed his hearing - particularly higher end. But he's always been just super into music. Absolutely loves it, will just sit there with his apple dirty buds and listen to albums. And when he visited me this last month, I put the grado sr80x's on his head. Hardest man in the world and he nearly cried. That piercingly sparkly high end suddenly brought out parts of music he flat out couldn't hear anymore, and hadn't for years. So of course I gave them to him. Dank made me such a grado convert that I now have 125e's and OG 225's, and a pair of custom built gs3000e's (earphonediylabs, fully custom built set with detachable mmcx cables, $220 all in for an $1800 pair of cans. Deal of the damn century) Wife and I use the 225/125's exactly how he described when we're traveling. Splitter coming out of the laptop. Movies sound amazing. God bless grado, seriously. Oh, I heard a difference, they were amazing. That began my odyssey into nice audio equipment.

    ngl, I bought my SR80e coz I remember watching a videos where you said that they're like 80% of the sound quality of the SR325e (which you said you use most often for casual listening), but for a lot less money, and I wanted a good pair of open backs to listen to FLACs and watch movies. I fucking love em to bits now and they're the only expensive purchase I haven't grown to regret. So you can imagine the pikachu shock face I pulled when I saw the SR60e (which aren't too different from the 80s) in the thumbnail and the part of the title said "worst headphones ever". I was ready to create a petition to nuke Australia for harbouring the man that made me a grados fan boy and then spat on my face for becoming one. Thankfully, you were just professing your love for em, so Australia lives to fight another day.

    Honestly from this vids title and the Hemphones, I was expecting him to shat on Grado headsets and would have hated this channel from then on. I've come to love Grado headsets after buying SR325is 8 years ago before they transitioned everything to an E on their wiring (was I or IS). Now with my own pair of hemphones after looking at reviews, I fell in love with Grado designs all over again. I'd like to get my hands on higher end sets like the PS500e or one of their reference series GS1000 (or one of the lower models for pricing). That said, I know Senheisser, AKG, etc makes really good headphones, I'm just enjoying what Grado has created thus far.

I just thought that if he had actually made a video shitting on Grados, It would have been super out of character, but I still would have expected a reasonable explanation since he's generally really positive and optimistic about headphones (even mediocre ones - not to say he doesn't label them as mediocre in the end) and explains his conclusion pretty well. My only gripe with the Grados is the foam. Yeah, I get it shapes the sound and gets the speakers close to your ears without too much obstruction, but I really wish I could use the grados without needing a break after 2 hours of so of enduring that itchy feeling the foam gives my ears. I heard the foam gets more comfortable with use, is that true?

The stock headband was painfully uncomfortable, bought a custom upgrade. I had an issue with the cable that didn't come to light until I bought a proper headphone amp. I was well out of warranty by then, whoever handles things for Grado in the UK weren't interested. I contacted the original seller, who's in the US, who contacted John Grado personally. I paid shipping to get the headphones from UK to New York, Grado replaced the cable, free of charge, and Grado paid for return shipping. Outstanding customer service.

    My "go-to" headphones since about 1989 have been Sony MDR-V6. I have had many other headphones as well, but something about the way the MDR-V6's sound appeal to me. I have noticed things in older recordings that I have not heard with other headphones, such as tape warble that happened during the live recording that ended up on the original vinyl press and subsequent CD's. Other sounds from the studio sessions herd that the artist probably didn't want in the recording as well. I actually enjoy hearing those mistakes. I decided to pick up a pair of the Grado SR60e and have been using them for about a week. I think this may be my new "go-to" headphones. I hear those same "mistakes" with the Grado's where other headphones boost the base or have other electronics that mask what the true recoding has. The only negative I have with the Grado so far is the foam earpad and the sharp edge of the headphone on the part of the headphone near the earpad. I wish the earpad was a little softer perhaps a different material over the foam. It is getting harder to hear the "pure" sounds since I have been getting older. I have listed to music thru headphones for so many years louder than I should have and it has taken a toll on my hearing.

    Having modded my 10 year old SR80s, I can say that the worst part of their design is that plastic button with the model number on. Just taking that off and replacing it with an open grid just ever so slightly takes off the tinnyness and the worst of the harshness on the high end, I think that chunk of plastic makes a slight echo at those frequencies and making the back completely open cleans it up. That or that it's I swapped the outer cans with 3D printed parts, they seem slightly less resonant than the OG plastic so maybe.

They had two pairs of Audezes and it was like seeing a celebrity. Those things sounded wild. Of course, they were unbelievably out of my price range. I puttered around with some other high ends, just spoiling myself. They also had a couple lower-end pairs including those funny little underdogs, the Grados. They had the SR60X ones and I really wanted to give them a shot, and I really loved em when I did. On top of that they had a price tag that I wouldn't sweat if I bought them then and there, and so I did. Turns out the demo pair were the last ones they had in the building so the guy helping me chopped off a quarter of the price, so I was just walking on air. Just wanted to say thanks for opening the door to audio in an approachable way, being reintroduced to all my favorite music is such a wonderful experience.

    I bought the 60e secondhand a year ago (after watching this video of course), and it was such an amazing experience using it. I don't usually like on-ear headphone but because I use it at home, sitting down, it's just so comfortable because it's light and you can adjust the headband clamp force. It sounded "light" as well, that it's not too bassy and sparkly, but still quite flat, my ears are just ready to listen to anything I'd be listening to. And then just last month I found a pair of secondhand 80e's which are even cheaper than my 60e's (well it doesn't come in its original box and no 3.5mm to 6.5mm adaptor, minor details) and immediately bought it, and give the 60e to my sister. After a month using it, I think the 80e has "fuller" sound than the 60e. That is, it covers the low end more. Not louder, but more extensive.
