I had this exact iPod, green and everything, and I absolutely LOVED it. I was running competitively at the time and this was the first time I was able to take music with my on workout runs that didn't weigh me down or skip at all. When it came out, I knew it was for me. To be frank, up until music came to smart watches, this was still my go-to music listening device for running.

I still own this one. With the engraving, "whisper word's of wisdom" on it. Got it with the money I made working at the local camera store during high school. Even bought a waterproof earbud set that you housed it in to go swimming. That was a great fall/summer for me when I picked up in 2009 I think. Toronto weather was great, I was working so had lots of disposable income, went out late with friends, was in great shape. The air just smelled and tasted better. Man I hated high school. But not that summer. I still keep this shuffle near me to remind me of that time. 12 years ago. Damn.

I had one of these as a kid and I had 2 alternatives to the included headphones, both made by Scosche. The first was a dongle with the 3 buttons that connected between the iPod and any 3.5 mm headphone plug (didn’t last long before it fell apart). The second was a case that you slid the iPod into with a built in plug that went into the iPod, it had the 3 buttons on the opposite side from the clip, and a 3.5 mm jack on top. I felt like such a badass using this to listen to music in class without getting caught, which was even easier because I didn’t have to pull it out of my pocket to scroll through playlists. I just wore a hoodie and stabbed a hole in one of the pockets to run the headphone wire through.

I had the first grey version of this, and fell in love with it. It was perfect when cycling or working out as I could clip it only my clothes and not have to find the device to operate it, as I could always reach the earbud wire. Being small was key and it excelled at that. even now I use Jaybird bluetooth earbuds with a wire connecting them (gives some security while cycling, although they have never popped out) and I always control them with the switch on the wire. Even now at gym I always operate music with AirPods. I think Apple was onto something here, but we just weren't ready for it

  • @wiseguygazette

You said it yourself. Even now you use headphone controls instead of device controls. You know why? Because ALL devices can use headphone controls. But this one forces you to use them. So it's objectively worse and a stupid idea. It would be like if your jaybirds were the ONLY way to play and pause music.

lmao i still have a blue one somewhere around here. i'll find it occasionally when i open a certain drawer or go through a box in my closet. i can't remember where exactly. idk why i even bought one back in the day. i had a couple ipod touch's already at the time. the shuffle was so tiny though so i remember constantly losing it in my bag and having to dump everything out because digging around wouldn't be enough. i think i bought it for my dad so he could listen to his music on the aux in his car but he stopped using it after about a year because i never felt like adding new music to it for him when he asked and then i moved out. i remember he told me he saw an ipod commercial and was all hyped about them. it was pretty cool to see my dad stoked on technology cause the previous time i saw him like that was when the original xbox came out and he got us one.

Had one of these when I was 6 (it was my first ever tech product), and I loved it. Lost it about 2 years later, which is pretty unsurprising given how small it is, but it was cool. I actually forgot (or, didn't know) this model existed. In 2010 (obviously after this came out) I was too caught up in the iPod Touch realm of things as well as the square iPod Nano with its touch screen, so this just passed me by. It seems like this just came and went. Truly a strange piece of tech indeed. It should've at least had volume controls IMO, or a physical mute switch. I do like the look of it however. It's extremely sleek and looks like it could fit anywhere. But this is an extreme example of something looking pretty but also being a pain to actually use. I think it'd actually be a cool device if it had all the traditional physical controls, but in that form factor and with the same appearance. That would've made for a compelling Shuffle, I think. Speaking of the iPod Touch, I also vaguely remember VoiceOver being a thing on there, if I'm remembering correctly. But I never used it, it was always just a vague settings option and nothing more.

This was my first iPod and first Apple product of any kind and it was the starting point of my full switch to the Apple ecosystem, so it is weird to see that some people found it strange, for me it always felt intuitive to use (ok after the first few hours of geeting used to the controls). I would still be using it, but I find it hard to find compatible earphones, because the "new" earpods don't work :(

I still have the 1st and 2nd gen Shuffle and 1st Nano in my drawer! Back in college I used the 1st gen Shuffle to listen to music and as a thumb drive for my schoolwork. I played around with them not too long ago and it’s amazing they still work after all these years.

VoiceOver was introduced for the first time as a gesture based screen reader on the iPhone three GS. You are right about it being on macOS in 2007 though. VoiceOver on the iPod shuffle is nothing more than some clips that were gathered from your Mac back in the day.

Yeah, VoiceOver was introduced as Spoken Interface Preview for Panther in 2004, then bundled with Tiger, from installation to setup and beyond in 2005. I would love to sync this with an old G3 which cannot run Leopard for the older voice clips. There were also .wav files of Alex on the iPod, so super cool.

Do you mean that instead of bundling a TTS engine, the iTunes app simply rendered the TTS from the computer and then bundled the audio descriptions with the songs themselves upon syncing? That's a clever workaround I've heard of

I have the mirror version of this one. It was great. Until I added an audio book to it and then it would randomly try and play a chapter of a book between songs. If you ever tried to pause the book it could skip instead of pause. So listening to books was a nightmare. Eventually a third party made a big adaptor. It gave you buttons on the actual iPod and you could use any 3.5mm Jack headphones with it.

I searched for videos about this iPod because it's my favorite product that Apple ever made. All these years later, I still miss it. It was a really, really beautiful and elegant product that worked great. Not hard to figure out the remote control on the cable. Volume up and down. Two taps to skip to next song, three taps to go back, one tap to stop, one tap to start, press and hold to skip to different albums or podcasts. Very fun, very easy.

This video taught me two things: 1) There's a third-gen Shuffle with no buttons. 2) The square Shuffle I mysteriously found in my room one day is a fourth-gen, not a refresh of the rectangular second-gen I got as a gift back in '07. I've never used the fourth-gen, but it's good to finally know what the button does.

But even as a dumb teen, I saw the 3rd gen in stores and was like…’Why would anyone want that?!’ It’s neat that they could make a music player that small, and they basically invented controls on the headphones themselves, the 3rd gen was a novelty at best

I would put on the adapter and clip the iPod to my shirt collar. I would no longer risk cords catching on machines or weights. For me it worked amazingly, but for sure it was a small market.

Thank you sooo much for this elaborate review!! I'm not a huge Apple fan by any means, but the 3rd gen Shuffle is one of my favorite tech products of ALL TIME. I love how weirdly inconvenient, yet at the same time strangely simplistic and easy to use it is. I loved going to the gym with this thing, as clipping it onto my shirt and not having to worry about a screen cracking or some other flimsy part breaking while handling weights was a huge relief. When the original headset broke, I tried to use the newer Apple buds but soon realised that they actually DO NOT WORK with the 3rd gen Shuffle. So, in typical Apple manner, if your og headset broke, you were pretty much screwed. Luckily though, I found a third party headphone adapter with buttons on eBay (this was back in 2014, and I'm happy to report that the adapter STILL WORKS!!).

I remember buying one a day before launch. I found some cheap ipod cases protectors for it and used it for a long while. My gripes with it was the rubber on the headphones would eventually start falling apart and because at the time there wasn’t really any alternatives I just had to get new headphones every so often. I remember leaving it in my shorts one time and my mum washed them without checking pockets however a brief few minutes in the oven on the lowest temperature seem to fix the issue. Changing tracks or playlist could be a little annoying as it had to read everything so if you didn’t label songs on an album well you’d just hear “track 1” That said I still have it and I believe it still works. I eventually got a Sony MP4 player because I wanted to be able to see the track/playlist I was selecting (without needing the apple headphones) also it had a radio feature which it would also let you record.

I had one of these and it was my only music player for a long time. I memorised the entire library that my uncle loaded onto it for me (as he was my only relative with music on iTunes at the time), and even on shuffle I could identify every song within 1-2 seconds of it starting. Sadly it was so small I eventually lost it. I wish I still had it as it there was one song on there I really liked but have never been able to find. It was a melancholy song about a lonely boy and a hill, but that's all I can remember.

Had it, loved and hated it. This thing is amazing when you know your way around it, but the 4th gen kept all the same features except the 4gb storage. Voice over was awesome because I could navigate albums and playlists by using it without looking. I could only imagine blind people being really happy to own one of these. Wish they still sold the shuffle 4th but with 8gb storage minimum. Biggest problem today, no earbuds I've found will work, even Apple's own earpods with remote don't work. You have to have the official 2nd gen style apple earbuds with a remote.

You can put all of your favorite songs into one huge 1000 song playlist, and carry. Best ipod ever, still use it, have the black version with 4GB capacity. Works with any earphones, but voice over can be used with just the old apple ones from 2009-2012... One quirky feature of this, if you sync with a windows PC, you get a female voice, and with Mac you get a male voice for voice over.

Note: EarPods wouldn’t work, Apple In-Ear 2012 refresh wouldn’t work, urBeats series wouldn’t work, and Beats EP wouldn’t work. They do play sound but remote control wouldn’t work.
