It really says something about MS's opinion on the Zune that they completely ejected it from their ecosystem, when their philosophy everywhere else is compatibility at all costs. You can still access the old menu for setting up a Dial-Up internet connection in modern versions of Windows. You still *can't* name files things like CON, PRN, AUX, or NUL because **MS-DOS** used those filenames to output data to certain software or peripherals (like a printer). Every new version of Windows is built on the zombified corpse of the last, leaving behind all of the old protocols JUST IN CASE something old and antiquated comes along and expects things to work a certain way. And then there's Zune which can't even run it's management software anymore.

Being an original zune buyer, way back in 2006 when i was in 6th grade of middle school, i actually loved it. I had a 20gb ipod (pre ipod video) and it was a really solid device change for me. I definitely received some picking on by my friends for choosing zune but i really did do my research on them and for me it was an excellent choice. In 2006 radio was still a really big media platform. Living in metro detroit i would listen to channel 95.5’s mojo in the morning and listened to a couple radio stations to find new music which is a feature i really did like the zune had. The video screen was nice and watching in landscape always made the movie view much better than on i found to be viewable on the ipod video. Definitely a cool mp3 video player even if they never stood a chance to itunes and apple.

Yeah as much as I love Wade's content, he always shits on FM radio saying nobody wanted it. Many of us didn't have much storage for our music and relied on the radio to listen to new songs when our downloaded songs grew stale. Maybe he couldn't get good reception in Australia countryside, maybe the music he listened to barely made it to the radio (doubt it, he likes The Offspring). I would have loved a device that had a built in radio. In fact, even as late as 2014 my smartphone had a built in FM tuner and it was amazing.

Man, I had an Archos 504... That thing was great! I was an early cable-cutter and I used the Archos (with the dock and remote) as my entertainment center. Between all the free TV/Movie apps and the ability to go online, I never felt I was lacking in entertainment media. They were extremely thin on the ground in the US, though. I bought mine off ebay (after doing some research into the unit), and I didn't know anybody who ever even heard of it, let alone owned one.

My dad used to work for Microsoft, and when the smaller Zune's came out (the one at the end of the video) he got one each for my brother and I. I did really enjoy them. The 'squirting' feature was cool, but yeah, sucked that I would have to plug into my brothers computer to get the mp3 if I liked it, but still cool. The BIGGEST problem with them.. at least with mine, was it would just freeze. Completely. Like in the middle of a song. The song and playlist would keep going. Buttons didn't work. No force restart. Not even the screen would turn off. And I would have to wait for the battery to die, so I could charge it and use it again. Did it like once a week. So dad got us iPods haha.

I didn’t much care about the music store and in my vague memory, it was actually super easy. Like I don’t remember struggling with it at all. I had a Zune 2 or whatever it was called, with the touch/dpad, and it really was the greatest pocket music player ever made from the old days. It just missed the boat in a big way, as you pointed out. I used that thing deep into the years when most kids were rocking with iphones and ipod touches, and I genuinely loved it and loved using it. I would still use it just for pure satisfying nostalgia, if it wasn't broken. And therein lies another problem. I dropped it ONE TIME from about 2' off the ground, and it got some major disk/screen malfunction after that. There shouldn't have been a disk drive inside of that thing. They had so much potential with that stinking thing, but they shot themselves in the foot over and over. I am now an Apple ecosystem guy through and through, because all of that seamless system cooperation is more important to me personally than anything else. I love not having to think about/troubleshoot simple things. Every time I go "hey I wonder if I can use my iphone and MacBook in conjunction with each other to accomplish _______," it's like Apple has already thought of that and made it so.

There was a lot it couldn't do, but it did what I needed, music and podcasts, very well. What I possibly loved most about it and the OG IPod, was the click wheel. I could navigate my Zune without taking it out of my pocket, which is something you just can't do with touchscreen devices. I collect Zune devices and peripherals now because I have a soft spot for failed hardware. 🙃

I had one of the last ones of those they made. I loved mine. I even had the nice headphones and the leather case, but mine was red. I ended up getting an iPod because of space. I had so much stuff that the Zune wasn't big enough. But the best thing was that I could put my own music on it. I didn't have to buy everything, I could use my own collection of videos and music, which was what I liked best about it. I had the biggest one they made which I bought right before it was discontinued. I took it everywhere and a friend of mine is still using it even after all these years. The last one had a different D pad, you could spin your finger around it for volume and to select songs. They did make some improvements, but it didn't sell the way they wanted so they got rid of it.
