The BEST way to install a METALLIC EPOXY Floor

Online Classes: decorativeconcreteschool.com
This week I'm going to show you how we installed three different metallic epoxy floors.
The first project was on the third floor of an apartment building. The homeowner already had a diy metallic epoxy floor, but he was unhappy with the look of it. He asked us to apply another coat of metallic epoxy resin on top of what he already had. Here are the steps we took:
0:00 - Intro
0:30 - Sand the floor to prep it for a coat of metallic epoxy
1:00 - Wipe the floor with acetone to clean it
1:20 - Mix metallic epoxy in the apartment foyer
1:55 - Apply metallic epoxy coating
2:25 - Use a trowel to apply the epoxy
3:25 - Apply urethane
I wanted to show another project where we applied the metallic epoxy resin with rollers instead of a magic trowel.
4:36 - Mix metallic epoxy resin in the driveway
5:09 - Pour metallic epoxy
5:24 - Roller technique for applying metallic epoxy resin
The third project that we are installing is a designer epoxy basement floor that we primed with a metallic primer.
6:20 - Metallic epoxy primer instead of solid colored epoxy resin
6:47 - Pouring metallic epoxy coating

    Hey Tim - love the videos, great job. QQ, I’m trying to decide between a concrete stain & metallic epoxy for my garage. Which would you recommend? Is one more durable than the other?

  • @TimDCVA

    Thanks! You can topcoat stained concrete with the same epoxy & urethane we use on metallic epoxy… so they should have similar durability. You would just have to grind the concrete before you stain it, which changes the look a little.

    Question for you, at 1:27 I noticed the dewalt box. Do you like dewalts dust extractor? I'm shopping around for one. I'm in NC and have done a few floors for folks using acid etch but would like to have a small grinding set up with an angle grinder.

    If you put metallic epoxy on an unfinished basement concrete floor, do you recommend framing base plates first or after the epoxy? Will drilling into the epoxy floor crack the floor and spread ?

  • @TimDCVA

    @TimDCVA

    Жыл бұрын

    No. It doesn’t matter what order you do it in… but I prefer to go after framing so the carpenters don’t have to worry about damaging the floor.

    What size nap roller do you use for the urithiane ? I been using 10mm and need to cross hatch it to get roller marks out and 2 coats have problems with the stringy bits towards end if I’m not getting it down fast enough

    If there’s any excess/puddled epoxy after spread out will it dry flat before sealed?

  • @TimDCVA

    @TimDCVA

    3 жыл бұрын

    Im not sure I understand the question. The epoxy will cure no matter how thick it is on the floor…but if it’s too thick you might have issues with bubbles. If you meant ‘dry flat’…like a matte finish… no, it’s usually glossy when it cures.

    How do you find the metallic epoxies hold up to the sun in garages?

  • @TimDCVA

    @TimDCVA

    3 жыл бұрын

    They do pretty good...as long as you use an epoxy that had UV inhibitors in it. Lighter colors definitely show an amber color more than dark colors though.

    @@TimDCVA Thank you. I thought that might be the case. We've only installed a handful of metallics and they were all inside. I always wondered about using a polyaspartic for the metallic coat but figured it would be cost prohibitive and drastically limit how thick it could be applied.

    @@TimDCVA I wanted to see if you have any feed back on Epoxy Plus EP-U4000 urethane top coat? It's one of the few semi-gloss urethane top coats I've found that is supposed to be fairly scratch resistant but not a Satin finish. I've just finished a deep silver metallic floor for my garage and it looks amazing, but I'd like to keep it relatively scratch/scuff free. Love your videos btw! You're one of the few epoxy guys who seem transparent and not just looking to advertise their line of product.

    Thanks! I’ve never tried that product before. Let me know how it goes if you use it. I’ve used aluminum oxide in regular urethane before to get a semi-gloss… and anytime you add AI you get a lot of scratch resistance.
