The BEST Toolbox of 2023? Sonic NEXT ToolBoxes: Best in Class!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you guys want these cabinets, hit up design@obsessedgarage.com to get you one. We'll have them up on the site in a few weeks.
You guys know I have been very vocal about SONIC and how these guys are the unsung heroes of the tool and toolbox world. It is surprising to me how these are way nicer than the equivalent Snap-On boxes that people spend double and triple on, but it makes sense when you look at how those companies are setup with triple and quadruple margins built in.

So here is the deal. I've spent time, hands on, with pretty much every tool box and cabinet that I could get my hands on. Shark, Vault, Baldhead, Saber, Haley, Snap-On, Sonic, (All the cheap ones like Gladiator, Husky, New Age), Moduline, Craftsman, Harbor Freight stuff, Beta, Hazet, Lista, Rousseau, etc. I've done this not as a dealer, but as a consumer wanting to purchase for myself. Dare I say, outside of the people that make the cabinets, I've probably had more time with various brands than most anyone. I've literally traveled around the country touching tool boxes. Personally, I don't have a Sonic or any other tool box. For me, tool boxes are too small. I have fixed cabinet arrays at home and at my studio. If we were to take storage size out of the equation as you'd always win getting a cabinet array and just look at the rest of the package, Snap-On cabinets/tool storage is near the bottom of my list. I'll never forget Tommy Goldberg questioning my sanity when I said Snap-On tool boxes are not even close to the best. Then I took him to the booth at SEMA and watched him open the drawer and see the light bulb go off. 2 to 3 times the cost, and although not the worst, they are not great. They are shiny, which makes them always fingered up. Then they get scratched because you are constantly wiping them down. The drawer glides and wobble to the design as you operate them is easily the wonkiest of all tool boxes. The four finger drawer latch system is really weird although likely expensive to create, feels super cheap. The only drawer latch I find worse is the one from Rousseau. The good part about the Snap-On latch is it works, Rousseau you have to get it just right to be able to open the drawer. Since everyone is touting the superior construction of a Snap-on, why wouldn't you want Austrian drawer glides instead of the cheap ones they use? The Sonic drawer glides are also basic, but they have more feedback and feel sturdier. Snap-on's solution to a "heavy" drawer is to just add two slides per side instead of one. Lista/Rousseau. So...we have a Taiwanese built to Dutch spec tool box that has a far superior fit and finish to all the brands I've listed above. It has inferior drawer glides to Lista/Rousseau, and are generally smaller. The smaller options are much more appropriate for a rolling box for most home garages. I have never done, and likely will never have anything to do with car dealerships, so I don't care much about the argument of how a tool box should function in that environment. For my garage, I'm getting either a Lista box and deal with the American made fit and finish issues or a Sonic box that perfectly fits the best organization system that currently exists.

100% Agreed!!! When you're paying $10,000+ for a Snap On tool box, array, etc. and you get the quality you get it's fair to say its complete garbage. There's always a dilemma of how Chinese made stuff is cheap, low quality, etc. but when it comes to Taiwan and their manufacturing the precision, fit and finish is unbeatable. Same with the Japanese and German stuff. The KTC nepros tools ratchet's chrome plating, quality, fit and finish puts a Snap-On ratchet to absolute shame! I've been following Matt for quite a while now and its obvious he really takes the time to understand and test all this stuff out down to the tiniest detail so he knows what he's talking about. I understand everyone has different experiences but it's beyond me how one would spent that type of money on Snap-On for the quality you're getting unless you're committed to the idea of getting "Made in USA", products.

Hey Matt, i’m thinking the detent is stronger on the roll around cabinet because it’s mobile. One way to check the MSS+ 870 is Mobil so if the detent is stronger than the non-mobile.MSS+ then they are simply beefing up the mobile cabinets which would make sense. and by the way, I have a 1985 craftsman toolbox top cabinet there is no detent the drawers lock when you close the lid, bottom cabinet no detent the drawers lock only with the key. Definitely planning on getting MSS as I need a corner configuration and of course they’re much more affordable one of these days have a great one.

I agree you wouldn’t need a Snap-On tool box for all the washing, polishing and detailing you do on your cars… but saying you’d just put one out on the curb and saying that SONIC toolboxes are far superior is not a statement to be taken seriously from anyone watching this. Snapon toolboxes are made in Algona Iowa, by Americans with American sourced materials. A 30" deep epiq has drawers that are just under 28" deep, and 62" wide. The case and drawers are made out of steel, not aluminum. Lifetime warranty and since snapon makes their product they can get parts for boxes 40+ years old. The sonic box, going off his measurements and their website i cant figure out why the box is about 9-10" wider and about 5" deeper than the biggest drawer. They strangely look alot like the crap matco puts out There is a reason every manufacturer of toolboxs tries to compare their toolbox to snapon. They build something cheaper then market it as being the same or better.

If we want to be more fair as far as storage space in either cubic-in or sq-in, you are probably closer to a snapon KCP1422. So you are looking at just over 8k MSRP which you'd probably pay closer to high 5k? But be getting USA made box. That has been engineered and built to be durable, and still look amazing. Oh and has a power drawer for your made in Murphy NC power tools...

The cabinets look legit. not sold on Sonic as a tool provider, but they are on top of the storage side. Agree that Snap-On and others in that strata are cruising, particularly at the price. I love the hate everyone is giving like on one side he did ask for it with the lack of knowledge of snap on boxes. Snap On does make their own boxes and has better layout. Snap on has great boxes that get improvements based on what auto, aviation, moto, and race car techs say. Saying that snap on makes crap is ignorant. That being said layout, locking mechanism, styling, and if it only fits screwdrivers in one drawer with no extra room is honestly personal preference. If he likes how that box looks and feels then screw it not my money. It’s like saying you prefer matco ratchets over snap on. I know so many people that use so many companies of toolboxes. I prefer snap on boxes with the only gripe is my prybars are too long for the drawers but my buddy prefers matco boxes. At the end of the day it’s personal preference and if anyone wants to combat me with this say how I know. I work on off-road race vehicles as well as normal automotive and I have used harbor freight stuff and it work just fine in some situations

You said the s9 box was 2300. And its 30 some inches wide 20 inches deep. A brand new lift top snap on 40" wide cart is 2300 msrp and you can definitely get it cheaper than that on a truck if you know your dealer. The lower end snapon boxes dont have the best slides but any of the higher end boxes have 250lb slides. Thats why the feel like crap when they are empty, theg are desigbed to have weight in them. While I appreciate the fit and finish of these Sonic boxes, in the end I still think I'd rather have a made in USA, made in Canada, or made in Europe box that's a little "rough around the edges" but will last me my lifetime over a made in Asia box that looks nicer but will only hold up half as long. There are a lot of good boxes and everyone try’s to talk down about snap on. They are hands down the very best and nobody can argue it. A great American made product. The sonic boxes are nice but are not in the class of snap on and not even close. “I’d put a snap on box on the curb” “snap on don’t even make them” You really have no idea what your talking about with this. It discredits your opinion.

@@555fourthstreet8 I had my Craftsman box, and the plan was always to get a giant Snap-On. My life goal was to get the truck to come by my personal garage weekly, so that I could build my box and tool collection. I think it was probably 2012 or 13 when I walked into my first Snap-On truck at Titan Motorsports. I'll never forget the day. They have some smaller tool box arrays holding stuff in the trucks. I opened the drawer with that goofy four finger latch business and proceed to wobble the drawer out. I couldn't believe it. It was like you just told me Santa Claus wasn't real. I thought...maybe it's just the stuff on the truck. Well, one of the Titan techs had a huge box. I had never really thought about the quality. It was simply one of those bias things. I always thought I would have a Snap-on box someday. I then went over to his box and proceed to confirm this nightmare. I thought, "This guy is in debt for the $20,000 array for likely the rest of his career, and this is it? This can't be." I continued to confirm my horror every time I touched one.

Yeah Snap-on makes their own boxes and they hold up over time. Snap-on even put a few of their boxes under a Peterbuilt truck and the drawers opened up no problem. Sonic is just for dudes who want to store their tools to look at them periodically or to claim that they are “mechanically inclined. To sum it up: you’re not fooling anyone

STOP. Sonic does not finance. 99% of techs finance their tools and boxes. Sonic is made for the wealthy with expensive toys or dealerships themselves. I just got a 73' Classic series with a hutch and matching cart for 10K from snap on. The equivalent space in sonics systems ONLY comes from the MSS systems and even then they have zero large drawers only modular solutions. YOU CANNOT FINANCE WITH SONIC. Unless you're ready to pull out a personal loan from your bank which a vast majority are not you cannot get Sonic. I've had my s14 since 2017 and I love sonic. Most beautiful well crafted stuff I can find, is it realistic however for 90% of techs. No. If it seems like i'm salty it's because I am. I wanted so bad to be a Sonic guy I really did. I even traveled to the BMW of north America shop just to see the MSS systems before I even though of buying. Legit breaks my heart.

If Made in USA was number one priority it would be Lista, Snap-on is not worth it as far as boxes. They are upcharging obscene money for their boxes in particular. unless you need the clout in your shop of owning a truck brand or plan on thrashing it and trading it in every so often. Good utilitarian toolboxes but msrp is 4x to high for what you get. If you're coming from outside the OG community, Obsessed Garage isn't really appealing to the professional shop mechanic or oil rig pipe fitter.

The fit and finish of the Taiwan stuff is far superior to the $30,000 Lista array I just got. For example, I can pre-order a countertop, and it will fit exactly on a 20' Sonic array. I did the same thing with CAD file dimension of Lista and my countertop was over 1/2" short. Lista also has drips, wonky welds, and lean powdercoating spots. Now...I really like the Lista due to Austrian glides and drawer organization options, but I've seen them all. These Sonic boxes are my favorite. That's why I sell them. American made has a lack of precision that the German and Taiwan made stuff has.

@Obsessed Garage No, you're actually spreading lies. There is no aluminum in snap on boxes, and they are the industry leader in tool boxes. Your little box you seem to like is the same price point as a full-size snap on cart. No one pays list price for boxes. The only reason you are pushing your Taiwanese tool boxes is because you get a piece of the sale. Snap on tool boxes are USA made in algona Iowa with USA steel.
