The nice part of the gloss finish over the matte is it cleans up a lot better when you get grease or whatever else on it, at least in my experience. Great video!

I was 10 minutes in before I found out he’s a Sonic dealer.

After owning several Snap-On boxes, and working out of them everyday, some of the things that don't fit Matts needs, or don't meet his expectations, really are my favorite parts of the box. The way the drawers open when loaded full, they feel more quality to me. The casters are fantastic for rolling around the shop when it's loaded heavy, of course I have the blackout package on my Epiq which gives the black wheels along with back trim/handle and black badge. I opted for the bedliner top simply because it was black and the stainless just didn't match the red box with blackout package. I absolutely hate it, wish there was a black tinted stainless option. The speed drawer is fantastic for holding all the miscellaneous screws, bolts, and random small things that I have collected. The power drawer option is amazing to me, as someone who likes to lock all my stuff in my box at work the power drawer makes it easy, just one plug to plug in and it goes with me so my battery chargers are always in the bay I'm in. I totally respect Matts opinion on the Epiq, but from a heavy duty technicians point of view, I truly love the Epiq. However as I recently switched careers, my opinion may change as the use of the box changes.

Snap On has and always will be my first choice for quality boxes and tools. Been using them daily for way to many years to count.

The Snap On box is 4 inches deeper and a bit taller which makes a big difference in tool storage..... which makes it almost 300 pounds heavier. If you don't like the chrome you can get it trimmed out in several different colors and you have many counter top options. You can remove the wheels and the handle to give it a 'built in' look and feel. The most important thing is how it feels when you open and close the drawers for the next 20 years. Snap On boxes are smooth when the drawers are loaded. When you buy Snap On tools cash or used..... you will always get your money back out of them. Snap On tools are generational..... you will never see a Dad pass down Sonic tools down to their children. I do appreciate your reviews and comparisons since I am a bit OCD too.......

Snap-On tools aren't generational. That is some made-up goofiness that probably sounded better in your head than it does when actually typed out. You're confusing a snake-oil sales pitch and buyer's justification. Snap-On is a finance company now.

Pull out any drawer on both toolboxes and then stand on it with all your weight. See what toolbox flexes the most. I’ve done this many years ago when I purchased my intimidator snap on toolbox. Nothing compares to snap on. And the drawer slide better with more weight!!

Have that 60 Inch Epiq here in the land down under, rolling the behemoth of a box up and down a long diesel workshop and up concrete slab lips and over the steel mesh drains. Those overkill Castors are a godsend. I'm a blackout man with most things but my toolbox is a Beautiful Metallic Beige and Chrome and I think it looks Class. Totally agree the Epiq has short comings and can be improved upon. However I do think it still is worthy of the one for life title that is has.

The box is very well built. I'm sure whoever buys one of them will have it for a very long time. But I just can't bring myself to justify spending so much, for the box and the tools.

@@ObsessedGarage Whilst not applicable exactly to the Snap-On Toolbos itself. But to the product. Was the fact that weekly the snap-on man visited my place of work and sold a suite of gear that suited my applications and a vast majority of the time was of a great quality! Then they backed those tools forever with an outstanding warranty and relationship and convienience that no other manufacturer came close to matching. (i think Milwaukee may do so now in Aus but that is it). So that all meant that it was quite easy, efficient and beneficial to keep all my purchases under his umbrella. Again not trying to force it down your throat...... as a pro-sumer now I don't work somewhere where I have a weekly liason with Snap-On, so alot of that relationship and convienence has been lost. But I do suggest that maybe this is the part of the picture that you don't see from where you stand! Love your work mate take care!

Owner of an epiq snap on here. Just wanted to clear up the things he's saying about the casters/weight and not moving the box. For one, techs leave jobs and go other places. It is possible to move those stationary type boxes but it's lots of work. The capacity of the epiq is there because not only does it function as a rolling toolbox, it can be turned into a entire cabinet array style that you are used to Matt. I am aware the box is heavy. Empty weight is about 1k lbs. However the longevity and warranty that is available for the snapon makes it useful for a tech to buy. And I am in a position now where my box requires to be moved every day. And it weighs well over 1k lbs at this point. But it rolls smooth and you just have to not be a baby and move the thing. Also the trim on the front and back of the snapon is sacrificial pieces as well. That way if your box is hit or hits something, it's cheaper to replace the trim pieces. The sonic stuff is nice. I am not denying that. I have one of their small boxes as well. I think the big point you are missing is lots of things are preference, and not only that, rhe snap on is designed for the tech not the homeowner/shop owner type such as yourself. Most of your points are valid, but its a good thing to remember. I don't consider myself a fan boy of any brand, I just like good tools and equipment. But personally, as a professional technician, I want the snapon. However, if I'm at home I'd definitely get a sonic array, or even the s15 you've shown here.

If you don’t like chrome, why get chrome? You could have gotten a blackout version.

I just can't look past the hugely deep top drawer on the Sonic. Such a waste of space really. It should be one deeper drawer and a 2nd drawer below it (full width on both). Top should be deep enough for tall sockets and such.

The plastic thing Matt mentions around @25:37 is how I felt about certain parts of the BMW I used to own. Things would break and I'd curse the designer that made whatever part out of plastic. 🤣

The Snapon box seems to have the taller drawers. The sonic box looks to have shallow drawers not a huge fan of that height.

In the older days like the 80's & 90's Snap-on's hay-days the perception I observed was that professionals who earned their money with said tools that couldn't afford to be inconvenienced by "lesser-grade tools" breaking on the job; and the back up of having the support of the truck some times showing up same day with a free replacement was their meal ticket. Also back then Snap-on was usually the first to bring out specialty tools needed for specific special repairs on new equipment, and the raised that bar up high; customers were forced to pay through the nose big time...and you could see the bridge starting to smoke bad in the 90's from that extortion tactic. Now they have nothing but a name keeping them alive...like say a Harley Davidson. Last thing they had that was popular was a couple power tools...almost a decade ago.

I think you are pretty much spot on.

As a Technician with over two decades of experience in this field, AND a Snap-On Tools aficionado; I can appreciate Matt's perspective, thoughts and review of the Snap-On EPIQ. I'm writing this comment sitting at my Snap-On 84" EPIQ and a lot of the things he points out I simply did not notice until I watched the video. It does seem a bit nitpicky for something that you're going to use everyday and beat up, but I can understand why he would want things to be perfect if it's going in a home garage and will be on display so to speak..... Although, I also do have a 54" Snap-On Master Series in my home garage, and can say that it is a nice centerpiece to the space that conveys a specific message of "not only does this look nice, but I also clearly know what I'm doing"... I just don't think you can get that with any other brand box. I appreciate the price point of all the other Tool Boxes in the market now, but the bottom line is that you simply cannot beat Snap-On when it comes to everyday use IN the field. The boxes will stand the test of time and the saying of "it's the last box you'll ever buy" is 100% true when it comes to Snap-On. And I hate to admit it, but in the Automotive Service world, Snap-On IS the gold standard and very much a status symbol. When you see a new Tech rolling in a beat up harbor freight box you automatically think "alright, how long is this guy gonna last?" You see the same Tech rolling in a high end Masters or EPIQ Snappy box... you know they're established and will probably give you a run for your money on the Flat Rate side. Nice video. Nice review. Happy wrenching.

The day Sonic makes more color options is the day I would consider them. For now though I would go with pro slat. But I don’t think they have a dedicated rolling toolbox option. It’s a seperate line of pro slat.

Don't understand the critique of the Snap on colors. You can order them a million different color combinations, including mat finishes. Drawer handles can also be color matched to the box color of black.

When I finish my garage….hands down it will have sonic toolbox and mss cabinets, I would go with mss+ …but I don’t want black cabinets. And God bless each and everyone of you!!

Snap On box just screams quality. From the bigger casters and more robust build. Then add in the built in USA versus Sonic being made in Taiwan. These are the times to support US businesses. I can say that the more tools you put into the Snap-On box, the better the drawers move. Oh and now let's see the Sonic Toolbox hold up a dump truck like the Snap-On boxes do. J/k

The top drawer on the sonic doesn't make a ton of sense for an automotive toolbox. It has a ton of wasted space. Your choice in the snap on layout was significantly better. Something to remember as well is that the warranty process for a mechanic on anything snap on is going to be a big advantage. (Depending on the dealer of course) That dealer can also go under which leaves you screwed.

As a DIY guy, a good online warranty would be better than a tool truck. I clearly was speaking about mechanics and based on what you said I'm assuming you are not one.

The one thing I like about snap - on ( aside from their color options and top options ) is their brackets and casters. Best looking toolbox wheel setup😅👌🏻 .. definitely would be frustrated if my 💰rolling box had panel gaps of a Tesla

Ya I’m in for a fully fitted sonic box, but I’ll settle for a snap on if that’s my only choice.

So you'll buy a extra drawer for a sonic but not buy snap-on accessories to change the trim? You're not going to buy a fixture cabinet when you work in a shop. You need wheels. FYI Snap-on does make a fixed cabinet. Put a upper box or hutch on that sonic, a lot of good that handle would do. Lol Don't like chrome, get the black badges.... To each is their own but the biased dealer is more clear than ever. I do believe the problem is you're a happy home owner comparing the home tool box to a professional. Sorry for the rant but just expressing what i see.

I have a master series KRL1033 with a hutch and a locker now for almost 10 years. I work professionally as a heavy duty diesel technician. Flat paint is awful, it is a nightmare to keep clean. My box is flat black, I gave up the fight trying to keep it clean. My next box will have clear coat. I do agree with you about the visible spot welds on the Snap-on boxes, drives me nuts. I hate the speed drawer too, but a lot of guys like it for some reason. If I buy a bigger box I will be ordering it without a speed drawer. Those latches on the sides of the Epiq drawers are actually steel coated in plastic. Why would you want to plug in your box? Well all of my chargers are in there, my laptop, monitors, radio, etc. I move my box almost daily. Not a big deal, unplug, wind up the cord, move, plug it in. I don't have the luxury of a dedicated storage space against a wall for chargers and a computer. Nor do I want to walk 20 feet or more to get a battery. Time is money. My box is close to it's rated capacity, 6800lbs. I just had my Snap-on rep order me a new set of casters under warranty. I am probably going to order two more swivel casters to raise the capacity to 8000lbs. It honestly isn't that bad to move around with the big casters on it, it can be hard to get it started rolling. I highly doubt an automotive technician or autobody tech will ever have enough tools in their career to fully load a master or an epiq series box, you guys just don't need as much stuff (or as of heavy stuff) as a diesel technician needs. Maybe if you are self employed and you have to buy everything. Another thing on weight capacity and why it is a big deal, when you are rolling around a box that weighs a few thousand pounds and hitting pot holes in the concrete floor, the amount of force that is being impacted into that box is much greater than the actual weight of the box. A lot like a front end loader tearing up the front axle because of bouncing across a field with a load in a bucket. The drawer configuration is awful on that sonic box. That top drawer is nothing but wasted space. Having some 1 inch drawers is nice for punches, chisels, ratchets, extensions, screwdrivers, wiring diagrams, etc. If you are putting screwdrivers in a 2 inch deep drawer you are just throwing money in the wind when it comes to price per square inch or price per cubic inch. When it comes to drawer slides, Snap-on rates their slides at 227lbs per pair. Do you need 227 lbs of capacity for a screw driver drawer? Probably not, but if there is only 20 pounds in that drawer the slides are likely going to outlive you. The 30 inch depth on master series or epiq is awesome, deep drawers are a huge deal. I would never go to a 26 inch deep box at the shop. You do seem a bit nit picky when it comes to fit and finish but I do understand where you are coming from, and to some extent you are correct. However a lot of your complaints are from a position of preference. In my opinion between those two boxes the only way I would go is with a snap-on box, I need the space and the weight capacity. I open and close the drawers of my box hundreds of times a day. I know what works. That sonic box might be a great choice to start out, but as you grow as a tech that box will not work.

I love everything you do until this bs. People that don’t work in the field don’t get it. Casters are lifetime. Box is heavier build. By a lot. These two boxes shouldn’t be being compared. I bought my 84” epiq brand new with a top cheaper than 10k a year ago. Nonsense throughout.

Keep watching. I’ll show you why. You mechanics are at the bottom of the marketing funnel, so you miss out on other products. I’m at the top of it. Snap On has marketed the best. That is why everyone things they are so great. I’m here to show you they are not.

Check out Koken tools, specifically their Z-series. They're the Japanese of Snap-On but for cheaper and equal or better quality. They also have the lowest back drag ratchet in the world and also very low profile. Nepros from Japan are also very nice.

Quality is suspect at best, all tools last a long time, the warranty is completely subjected to who you franchise guy is. Plus all tools have same warranty.

If Matt got 9% interest on the toolbox imagine all my buddies paid 30% 😂😂 maybe that’s why people are so defensive and emotional about Snapon. I realized Snapon was trash when I put it to the test against a Milwaukee impact that the snap on couldn’t take out a bolt

Most everyone has a reason why the prefer or like certain brands. I do prefer the Snap On tools, in a shop setting you want something for a tool box if it gets dinged or scratched it won't bother you. Power outlets on toolboxes are primarily charge port for tools or diagnostic equipment. Not too many places would be fond of a cabinet systems. I am not trying to flame. I have spent 20 years and some in the environment. A good tool truck dealer makes a world of difference in the experience. I am also a guy who would take a 55 Chevy Nomad over a Bugatti.

Snap-on has a few other tools that aren't offered by others. Other video channels that are professional shops show Snap-on and Matco cabinets. They mentioned that they've had their cabinets for many years. They definitely hold up in a professional environment.

@@Rhaspun they do last a long time. In a shop setting which I do fleet work, you got clowns who just don't care. I had a Matco 5s, which kept getting dings in it. So, I sold it and got a cheap Husky box 42 inches wide and 24 inches deep. It seems to get targeted less. It gets worn out, I will go get another one, it was less than 500. I do get Matt's point of view, it differs from mine.

You should reach out to Snap-On about your concerns. I’d love a video where you’re chatting to someone live and hearing how they justify their price compared to their quality. See how many times they wave the flag.

Powered tool box makes a lot of sense for guys that work in shop and they might be in the same bay for a few days or a week.

Dead wrong on warranty. I’ve had dealers warranty things I clearly abused. Never an issue with Snap-on warranty. It’s obvious you are biased. Detents on toolboxes were big in the 80’. The. When they wear out, all the drawers open at the same time.

The latch tabs have metal embedded in the plastic.

The Sonic box is very interesting, the super deep top drawer though, hmmm definitely like the layout of the Snapon better, and the color. However for less then half the price, the Sonic might just be the winner. We be interested in seeing the other two boxes as well.

The problem here is you are reviewing these as a shop owner and most people purchasing these are mechanics. They ARE NOT keeping them in one shop forever AND DEFINATELY NOT STAYING IN ONE BAY, Some day they WILL switch bays, go to a new shop or go to their home garage and quality wheels are important. They ARE putting their power tools in drawers so they can lock them up. The tool box is NOT rolling around the shop, the tool CART is.

Omg! This all sounds so silly trying to crap on that blue beauty ❤ my eyes see only one tool box “Snap-on” and then some other black thing with a fast food name Sonic…. I’m sorry Matt but this video is not even compatible. No one in a right mind (whoever will win 1st place) is going to pick something called Sonic over top of the line SnapOn. No one or nothing is perfect, love or hate on Snap-on but don’t disrespect it by calling it ugly or junk. You could’ve chosen different colors. When actually using a box, the matte finishes look like crap from greasy hands etc. btw, that speed drawer is awesome. Thought it was dumb until I set it up.

Can you add on to the sonic? Like a side locker, hutch, top box, side box and side hutch or box?

No, you can't. I think when you start heading down the add-on path, you'd be much better off getting fixed cabinets.

First thing these boxes are for mechanic not for home use. (Mobile) Ok they put power on the box so you can work in this corner of the shop today and that corner of the shop tomorrow. Now this box is your only place for tools so you have to have a big drawer at the bottom for power tools because they are taller because you stand them up. No you don't put your tools anywhere else because it's not your shop you are working for someone and you can't just lay your tools down anywhere....

Oh you would be surprised on how many people have one of these they are on the snap on truck they usually finance one. Mechanic generally start off with a smaller one and you can sell it back to snap on and upgrade it for a $$ amount of course. But I know plenty of guys who have snap on tool boxes. And they are not making but close to a hundred a year. This is there life they eat breath out of there tool boxes all day long.

Like the toolbox series. Have you looked at the Tekton box? Would be interested in seeing that in the mix. There is not a lot of content on it. I think they are made by a Canadian company. Less money than these, but they look well made with roller slides instead of the ball bearing slides.

Once you go Snap-on... you can't go back!

If company X is doing something better more fitting your needs than company Y which you are bonded with it's a stupidity to not get a more fitting tool and struggling cause of bond you have to a company... If you like Nikes shoes but there is no size or model that fits your foot do you buy Nikes nevertheless? Or you are looking for other brands in hope that their size chart will fit your foot? No offense

Can’t understand why Snap On is “junk” if companies in Japan like Spoon, Js Racing, etc use Snap On for their tool boxes. And even Milwaukee for their power tools. They make quality products and I’m sure they love quality tools.

I think Matt uses the term 'junk' to mean different things. Its the cost vs what you're getting. You're paying a premium and you're just getting 'good'....

One of the techs at work has a Snap-on Epiq box. Financed the entire box. Most likely not going to make any extra payments. That toolbox is going to be almost a $16,000 after interest.

Looking at the comments, it looks like you need to test those new Harbor Freight boxes everyone is raving about!

Yes. He's giving his opinion of these cabinets from his perspective of not doing a lot of daily usage like a professional tech would. I follow a couple of other video channels and they're owners of a repair shops who use their tools a lot on a daily basis. They have had their cabinets for quite a few years. They're using Snap-on and Matco cabinets. I haven't seen a Sonic cabinet in a shop yet.

@@Rhaspun Sonic wasn't marketed to auto mechanic shops previously. Their focus was on different markets. Matty did an interview with the Sonic guys a few years back. It is worth a listen.

Exactly. They pitch revolving lines of credit to customers and get them to load up their balance into the thousands, with crazy interest rates. The tools they sold with a 50% profit margin transform into profit margins ranging from 150% to 200%, as customers end up paying more than double the original price for the tools over time.

I agree with the latch on the Snap on. It is a pretty crappy design and feels cheap. I don't personally like how it feels when it closes. Also the fact that the drawers don't open all the way out is driving me crazy for the top of the range. Actually, I like the classic series a lot more.

Snap on's high price probably leaves a lot of room for the franchisee to make some money, regardless of the discount he gives his customers. Add on financing benefits, Snap on ensures their franchise owners don't fail. So when comparing, price may not always translate into quality.

I had to buy a new box last year. Big triple bank setup. Snap-On would have been right around $15k. I wound up going to, I kid you not…Harbor Freight. As a professional dealership technician, going to HF is almost shameful. But the Icon branded stuff at HF is actually not bad. Got a triple bank box with a stainless top for less than a third. The Icon of course is not as good, but it’s not less than a third as good. You can tell the sheet metal is not quite as thick, the drawer slides are less quality, and the lock is awful. But it *does* the same thing the Snap-On box does…it holds and keeps all my tools organized. It even has a few gimmicks like a powered drawer and another drawer that has holsters for all my impact guns and drills. Interested to see this comparison series. Since I pretty much made my own decision that Snap-On wasn’t worth the money for a box. Some of the hand tools? Yeah they’re the best and priced accordingly. But after almost 30 years as a professional mechanic, I’ve very much learned that Snap-On isn’t the end all be all in tools.

What of Craftsmen tool Boxes???

So i have a matco box bc of the price point and the drawers feel so much better than snap on there is still things about it i dont like the hutch is simple and i wish it was on snapon level but the box just seems better bc the drawers are what you always interact with.

With the money you saved, you couldn't splurge on some punctuation?

I really want an S15 with two or three full width drawers on top instead of that extra deep one. Throw in an option for bolt-on side lockers and I'd be sold. My garage is too small for stationary cabinets/lockers, so I need to be able to move things around (including my Nussbaum Sprinter lift I bought from you) in order to do different types of projects. I refuse to pay Snap-On prices, so that pushes me to the goofy Chinese knockoff ICON boxes from Harbor Freight.

I already choose Sonic

Snap-on is the Corvette of tools/boxes….coming from a Snap-on and Corvette owner. There’s definitely better out there but it does have a more classic feel.

Stop playing with your tools.

Koken and KTC are some of the best tools made. Half the price of snap on and equal or better quality. Tone tools are also quality tools.

Snap On is not worth the price but the are not a bad as Matt makes out especially for a guy who is not a mechanic and does not work with his hands. I looked at the sonic tools and I am not a fan there quality is not as good and feel cheap compared to Snap On as well as other brands. The foam in lays are very good from sonic.

If it weren't for their ridiculous pricing, I wouldn't view SnapOn as poorly as I do. There are much better alternatives for less.

@@ObsessedGarage like I said snap on is not worth the price. I don’t mind paying premium for a premium product but the snap on box is not premium. There are a number of other tools brands much better than snap on and sonic.

@@ObsessedGarage Agree on the pricing, but from that view, Williams is a bit of a hidden gem; Snap-On's "industrial" brand sold in typically large volume contracts, but it is more or less the same (stampings might not be as complex, etc.) at a fraction of the price. The sockets are the same, ratchets are all last gen Snap-on, etc. Williams wrenches are a fantastic deal.

I don't want to get involved in your fight. I bought a Milwaukee tool box for $1000 and I'm more satisfied than Snap-on tool box

It has Chrome trim & wheels and you still bought it?

Snap-On & Lista are heavy duty pro toolboxes. The Sonic toolbox is nice but overpriced for what it is. Just get Harbor Freight.

Yes. I follow a couple of other video channels than are from busy shop owners. They just load up the tools as to how they like it and put their tools through lots of daily usage. The Snap-On and Matco cabinets they use in these shops have many years of being used in a professional environment. Sonic tools in recent times has been marketed to appear as if they are top shelf tools. They're tools form "Europe".

Fun fact, the drawer latches are not plastic. They are steel encased in plastic to protect the box from being scratched. If you cut/polish the box before coating it makes a nice difference in the finish. Don’t ask me how I know 😂 Toolboxes have wheels so you can move the box when and if you change shops. Not to move around the shop in most cases. Definitely should have ordered with black wheels, handle and logo if you don’t like chrome. It’s a choice. You had a more open mind than I expected in the video. Thanks for the surprise haha.

I hate Snap On Tools for there Shiny Chrome finish, to work with them is a horror if you have oily hands. I like Tools with matte finish way way more, you got better grip with it. In Germany we say Werkzeug Chrom (Tool Chrome) Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

Its sad to think that mechanics whom are just getting started pay $11k for a tool box. If they want to buy snapon tools b/c they think they must have them, fine, but the tool box?

Your mistake is you bought a brand new snap on box I saved 10,000 waiting for a used box and finally my matco guy had a used 60in epiq with stainless steel top was basically brand new and saved 10k

I’m a real mechanic. Having a big ol fancy handle on the side is not that big of a deal. If you need to use the handle that much, it’s one or more of the following situations; you work in a terrible shop where you don’t have a permanent rack to use, you have awful luck at picking employers and are constantly quitting and moving on, or you’re a terrible tech and are constantly getting fired and moving on. I haven’t touched the handle on my box since I’m put it in front of my two racks two years ago. Now to your point, there are parts of your statement that I agree with. Snap-On’s drawer locks that Matt thinks are “janky” are very good and make a lot of sense for someone who is constantly going in and out of the drawers all day.

Ask Formula One teams why they would overwhelmingly use Snap-On tools and boxes

Ask why whole F1 uses Pirelli tyres? Sponsorship is the thing that they provide of 20-30 sets of tools that they will look good on the television, marketing will work and people will think if F1 uses it, they must be good right? I'm gonna buy it since I'm proud guy and I wanna be good. That way they sell many many more tools

I prefer the snap on for looks and size. If I won 2nd place I’d still be happy with the sonic. Good luck everyone. Side note -how do you say it’s stupid to have a power top but then say you don’t see yourself rolling a toolbox around that’s 8000 pounds that’s why you have a power top. so you can charge stuff no one‘s moving those big boxes around a shop they stay there until you leave.

So when you're talking the typical mechanic and the rolling of the tool box, whether it be the power tops or the casters you have to take into mind that more than likely the mechanic isn't going to roll that thing around once its fully loaded (just like you said yourself), most of those mechanics will indeed leave their job locations and need to move that setup so a stationary cabinet setup is not the answer in a building you don't own. Also when you load that thing to move it from location to location you're going to want as much strength in the casters as you can get 👍 I'm not defending the snap-on because I agree whole heartedly with you on the "lazier American engineering" after seeing how my brand new Matco 6s box showed up I've been terribly disappointed with the fit/finish/QC. Someone recently said to me just because its made in the USA these days doesn't mean its of good quality.
