The Best Scene In X-Men: Dark Phoenix

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is without a doubt the worst X-Men movie. Aside from counting the spin-off New Mutants, which is barely part of the canon. Of the mainline X-Men movies, their sequel prequels, and the Wolverine films, I sincerely think X-Men Dark Phoenix ranks as the worst. Even Apocalypse has some redeeming moments, and Origins: Wolverine is far more watchable for its sheer stupidity. Even on a first watch Dark Phoenix is a chore to get through. It’s crazy that this was the second attempt at adapting the eponymous comic book storyline. X-Men: The Last Stand muscles the cure storyline in and they fight for screen time, but at a lean 90 minutes it’s easily the better movie.
Dark Phoenix doesn’t have the character work of the previous films, it doesn’t have the goofy charm, it doesn’t even have any good action! Well… aside from one scene. One marvellous freaking scene that feels like it was inserted from a different movie altogether.
Dark Phoenix’s finale had to be changed at the last minute because of its supposed similarities to Captain Marvel, and so the stunt team were given Cate Blanchett to do whatever they wanted in a train-set action sequence. And oh my god! This scene is fire. Where the rest of the movie threatens to put you into a coma this scene slaps you awake. It goes from the worst X-Men movie to one of the best X-Men live action scenes of all time. It is a splendid action showcase that highlights all the key mutant’s abilities and combat specialities, with intimidating villains set to a fantastic score. I’d rather you stuck this single scene on a loop for two hours than make me watching the rest of the movie again. This is without a doubt, the best scene in Fox’s final X-Men outing…

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Phoenix/Dark Phoenix needs to be done as at least two movies, one that introduces the Phoenix, the Shi'ar, and other cosmic concepts, and one that introduces the Hellfire Club and brings out the Dark Phoenix. Doing a plot that big in one movie hasn't worked before, and it never will. Still, you're right about this scene. It's very good.

  • @TNEQL

It basically needs to be the "Infinite War / Endgame" of the MCU, and be set up with the movies that come before it. You need the relationship development with Scott and Jean, and some sort of setup for the Phoenix itself, before making it happen. Some setup for the Hellfire would be useful as well.

I’m glad at least this scene was included in this film. It was a joy to see the various characters, heroes and villains alike, putting aside their differences to and joining forces against a common enemies. A particularly interesting aspect of the battle was Magneto, at one point, directing Hank to help Storm after losing Selene, one of his own, demonstrating that underneath his cruel demeanor is a genuine care for his fellow mutants regardless of their opposing philosophies. If we’re looking back on the Fox era X-Men, I wonder what your take would be on their more obscure projects like Legion and if we’re comparing them to Marvel Studio’s TV projects, how the former goes to more strange and unconventional places with its setting and premise (especially Legion in how it dives head-first into the surreal even after we seemingly learn to differentiate reality from fantasy) wheras shows like Wandavision, Moonknight, Loki (these three to a somewhat lesser extent) and Falcon & The Winter Soldier are more tied to set patterns and formats to make them more easily digestible to broader audiences and maintain the interconnectivity of their shared universe.

What I like the most about the X-Men movies is the fact that they never tried to follow the MCU's formula or its tropes, especially after it became a trend They never relied on nostalgia, the tone always kept consistent, and they always focused on the present And Dark Phoenix kept that way They kept their sense of individuality. I still hold that the first mission is kind of cool. I like the fight of Magneto trying to get to Jean while the X-Men try to stop him even if his brotherhood is kind of generic in the abilities. It moves along at a decent clip. It’s not at war with itself like X3 trying to give equal time to the cure and Phoenix storyline. It’s refreshingly scaled back. The score is great. There’s a unique sense of variety in the camera work in the train scene that I hadn’t seen in the earlier Fox X-Men flicks and honestly a train is a more interesting location for a set piece that never overstays its welcome than quite frankly Endgame’s field that same year. It’s not a perfect movie by any means, but I still rank it higher than Apocalypse, X3, Origins Wolverine.

One of the reasons I loved Kurt's moment in the train is because it explored such a niche part of his character. Kurt has on occasion gone into bezerker like rages similar to how wolverine does. It's one of the reasons those two share such a strong kinship, and why nightcrawlers faith and views on violence in general make his character so interesting. It satisfies our desire for flamboyant displays of skill and power, whilst also strengthening and stressing the values of the character. To see them explore the bezerker side of nightcrawler in this movie was such a genuine surprise when I first saw the movie. Because up until this point, Kurt is a borderline pacifist/someone who actively avoids conflict.

I would actually argue that Dark Phoenix has better character work than Apocalypse as the characterization aligns with previous characterization and the character arcs make sense. Can't really say that about Apocalypse though. For context: Erik and Raven's characterizations contradict their mutant and proud ideology. Xavier not forming the X-Men makes no sense considering he knows what could happen in the future. He also knows about Weapon X and Logan's future, but does nothing about it. All their arcs are rushed and not properly build-up. Oh, and lets not forget Quicksilver not telling Magneto that he is son to save the world without any explanation. It also makes no sense why Mystique didn't tell him. Why did Mystique did tell Storm that? Also, Storm just suddenly joins Apocalypse without explanation. The character work in Apocalypse is just awful.

Hey. There are more great things than bad things in X-Men Apocalypse. Im so sick of having to defend the misunderstood and underrated Apocalyse. It came out after Days of Future Past. How do you live up to the greatest superhero movie ever made?? However, the craftsmanship in certain scenes like when Quicksilver saved everyone in the whole school outshines most action scenes in the MCU. Im so proud to own X-Men Apocalypse on Blu-ray and i watch it far more often than any movie in the MCU.

No offense, but you really think Apocalypse has better character work than this film? The characterization in Apocalypse literally makes no sense. For example: You have Xavier not keeping his promise to Wolverine in DOFP about founding and forming the X-Men, instead he lets Wolverine get captured by William Stryker despite knowing what Stryker will do in the future... I could go on...
