The best projectors for your living room

Ғылым және технология

We tested nine different projectors to find the best one suited for most situations. There are a lot of choices when it comes to projectors. Laser or lamp-based? DLP or LCD? 1080 or 4K? However, the most important things are: how easy it is to set up, audio, image quality, and price. In this video, Alix Diaconis shows us the best projectors of 2020.

1. I was wrong about the VAVA Laser TV being a laser projector. It has a laser light source, but it uses a DLP chip, so it is technically a DLP projector. It doesn't change anything else I said about it though - just wanted you to know.
2. 02:07 - LCD projectors do not actually have a color wheel.

The Verge - how much is the average cost of a replacement bulb though, and approximately how long do they last? That was the problem with the projector that I had about a decade ago, and it would start to distort the image over time with colors that shouldn’t be there (not sure if they burned into the lens or the bulb itself was the problem).

I agree with you apart from one important caveat. Size. That size is actually an important part of immersion. If it weren't we'd all be watching movies on our OLED phones. I have a 65" OLED TV with stunning image quality. Better than all the local movie theatres in my opinion. But. Your point that the picture isn't there is also true of TV because they only ever display small people and small cars and small buildings. You always know it's only a TV. I like both projectors and TV but for different reasons. Maybe a 120" OLED TV with cinematic motion and we'd all be happy!

Intriguing. A couple of questions... If the screen is white, how does a projector produce deep black colors? I never really thought about it despite all these years of going to the movies. Also, if the projector is set up behind the couch, basically right next to your head, isn’t the fan noise going to drive you crazy?

The short answer is they don't. The color black can't be reproduced by digital projectors as black is an absence of light. This is why movie theaters do everything they can to keep the room as dark as possible. Environments where light can't be completely controlled (such as a living room) one could use a gray screen to artificially deepen the perceived black levels and enhance contrast.

They are such a small lumen you would have to have them so close to the wall in pitch black to enjoy anything. Also most the time just 720p or lower resolution. Don't waste time thinking about those.

Sadly this reviews are just for the normal Movie watcher. A lot of informations are missing for the cinematic viewer and gamer. Missing informations about lumen brightness or about Inputlag, available inputs, fan noise in decibel and color accuracy. If keystone is enabled, the resolution is reduced and in game mode it is not possible to use. So not really a benefit.

I agree with you on the Epson having the best picture. My advice though for a super quiet Epson operation is to get a high lumens one (e.g. 3400 lumens) and set it to ECO mode (produces around 2,110 lumens on ECO) That way, you'll hopefully get to enjoy a super quiet operation + bright and colorful image of the Epson 3-LCD tech.

How does anyone do a serious review and NOT include the Epson 3200 or 3800 models? They accept 4K and are pixel shifters which are very well reviewed and very bright for family room use. Plus, the contrast is supposed to be much better than the 2150 can deliver. More in line with the entry level DLP models.

I would love it if you could review the NEC P-525UL entry laser projector line. What I have been reading online in reviews is good but NEC caters to commercial environments so far and I would like to see if it would be suitable for my dedicated home theater environment. Moving to a laser is appealing as I am on my 3rd bulb in my current projector and the price has not reduced over time for projector bulbs.

I really like the BenQ HT2550 on a 120" screen for movies as their color reproduction is the best in its class. Also BenQ tend to have the better options for people who want to calibrate the best image. Optomas are great for the price and Epsons are good to use all around. For people who want to play video games though, The Optomas tend to have the best latency upfront and BenQ's have just as good gaming modes. As for lighting, good black out curtains help a lot and you only really need to control for direct sunlight on the screen as screens are made to reflect light really well. Indirect light from the walls aren't as hard on the screen and you can control for it by painting the walls a darker tone or even putting up pictures, posters, etc. Mounting projectors to hang from the ceiling is really easy with a ceiling mount. Just have to measure things out where you need to do some math to account for the throw distances and giving room to let you focus the image. The closer you put it to it's shortest range, the brighter the image but smaller the picture and vice versa. Ceiling mounting helps a lot with reducing the noise from the projector and takes up less space. Some mounts hook the projector to the mount so it's easy to take on and off to move like to set up in another room or outside for night time outdoor movie nights. Also those who want to go projector you really need to have a speaker system for stereo or surround sound given the projector is basically a mono speaker and won't add any bass. Even a sound bar would suffice.

@Alix Diaconis been enjoying it. They don't tell you in these videos how audio works, and this one was the only one in the price range that had an audio out so you could hook up a sound bar or system. Not an expert there or know how most systems work but that definitely helps me in having a good experience. Easy to adjust, focus, get a good screen size, and I haven't had any issues with illumination or sound. Can't wait to upgrade eventually but it's a good starter if one has never used a projector in a home, like me, or on a budget.

@@CanadianSkylights No. She was saying the screen she had was 80" because that was the minimum the projector would project. Projectors go up much higher depending on how far back you can put it and zoom. In most cases 300 inches is the limit. She was showing much bigger images on her wall without the screen. Also consider the cost of a projector at 700 bux to an 80 inch tv. Big difference in price.
