    Will be waiting a few years for 4k laser projectors to drop to around 1200$. Can't justify paying 2-3x times more for now. Good simple and well edited vid. Thank you. PS I've been a long time projector fan... since about 2007. The main reason I want to switch to a LED/Laser projector is not just because the bulbs go out quickly, it's that the overall brightness slowly drops and it becomes all about compromises: "Is it worth opening the projector tonight?" "I need to go out 30 minutes, do I turn the projector off?" etc.

    great video and explanation. I believe you when you say that laser has worse black levels but I don't understand why that would be the case. My understanding is that lasers scan almost like old school CRTs so I would think that the black areas would just be points where the laser would be turned off. I bought that LG LED version just recently, enjoy it thus far. Chris' earlier review of that model contributed to my decision. I'm building a fairly light controlled theater, but it's not going to be used continuously. I couldn't "yet" stomach the cost of the Laser. Maybe in the future. I didn't want to worry about the Lamp cost so that was also in my decision making. I guess over time I'll see if it was a good choice.

    @@project25055 well for be Epson Ub6050 is the bare minimum for black levels and that projector has only around 5000:1 native contrast. Those LED DLP's have horrible contrast, under 1000:1, so no, I won't watch any serious movie on such a projector. But I have a dedicated dark room. I agree that most people don't care about image quality and only few knows how images are suppose to look in terms of both color accuracy and contrast. Also I have seen people with Sony and JVC high end projectors in rooms with white walls so... I hope next led projectors from LG and others will improve on contrast couse they have very good software inside but hardware wise they just don;t give a sh- iet about it.

    I've had a BenQ HT1070 projector for a few years now and love it. It's first lamp lasted 8500 hours and it is projecting onto my 12 foot wide(165 inch diagonal) wall and the image quality is great. It is also 3D capable for movies and gaming which is a nice bonus. Lamp only costs about 75 dollars to replace. I bought it new old stock for 500 dollars. Only complaints is it puts off quite a bit of heat. My roommates don't like to run the air conditioner so on summer nights I got to keep the window open to vent.

    Thanks for this simple breakdown. Great content as usually. I do have a question about screens. Will any ALR screen work with a short/ultra short throw screen? Because I’ve seen specific short throw labeled screens but only come as big as 120-135 maybe. So if I could get a regular ALR screen for my short throw it would work? Is there any thing i lose?

  • @ChrisMajestic

    @ChrisMajestic

    2 жыл бұрын

    No. Ultra Short Throw projectors use CLR (Ceiling Light Rejecting) screens. ALR screens often reject light from the side while CLR screens specifically reject ambient light from above which is why they're more effective at rejecting light.

Usually used lamps mean you have to replace the bulb, however this is a nightmare scenario because as far as I know LED lamp replacements don't exist. This means I either just wasted $1400 or I can get LG to replace the lamp somehow?

    It is possible that an ALR screen may work with a short/ultra short throw screen, but it is not guaranteed. If you are considering using an ALR screen with a short/ultra short throw screen, it is recommended that you consult with a professional to ensure compatibility.

    As I faced this choice a few years ago I made the final decision with a bit different reasoning. First I'd been using my HDTV as my computer monitor as well as my home entertainment TV. I can say that the hours add up very fast in that case. After some analysis of my typical usage pattern I came up with a stark realization. If you exceed the 20,000 hours of a laser PJ you need to be another PJ but if you get a bulb based PJ you can simply replace the bulb. Lasers have/had a higher up front cost than a bulb based PJ so I calculated my amortized costs and bulb based for a 4K PJ won out. A Laser is a throw away product while a a bulb based PJ is not. Those several years ago when I bought my PJ, the UST lasers were still not prevalent (China direct sales only) so I ended up getting a Optimal UHD65 4K and haven't regretted my decision as even though I've replaced my bulb several times (every 4,000 hours) I'm not seeing the technology depreciation that may have occurred with a 20,000 hour throw away product. Plus the calculations between buying laser ~5K vs bulb ~2.3K CDN PJ, at the time, is still working in my favor. I've kept my eye out for compatible OEM bulb sales as have saved a lot over having to buy when desperate.

  • @pesokpesok

    @pesokpesok

    2 жыл бұрын

    these were exactly my thoughts when i was choosing my last PJ. a lot of people dont realise(mostly since industry hides this fact) but even though laser lasts a lot longer than bulb - once laser goes out you have to buy whole new PJ while with bulb based you just change bulb. average laser advertised to last 20-30k hours and bulb are anywhere between 3k and 10k hours. ive finally settled on Acer V7850 (that uses same DLP chip as yours in fact - bigger .67 version with better resolution than most 4k DLP PJs that use .47 DLP - although both use lens shift). ive been using it as a regular TV and so far am over 20k hours over past 2.5 years, which means if it was laser i would be looking to buy whole new PJ already. ive tried compatible bulbs but finally settled on using only original(Philips) ones and you can buy brand new original bulbs for under 60 bucks on Ali. wish i could go with ultra short throw PJ but they max out around 150 inches screen while mine does 300 (but you need good distance between PJ and screen. btw if you havent - try new Metal anti-lights screens - they are amazing but you have to watch no more than 20 angle.

    I have a short throw projector, used it since well 2012 but not that often, lamp based. I project 104" 16:9 at around 1.5m distance and me and my parents installed projector and screen. At some point i need to replace that projector and I hope to be able to have more or less the same screen by then.

    Hi Chris, Which one of the projectors would you recommend for displaying the image just on the plain white wall. So far I have nearly 10 years old benbq and it's time to upgrade but I'm in rental so can't mount the screen to the wall

    Hey I have a question do you know if it’s even possible to ultra short throw projectors to reach the 2:40.1 ratio or is that only standard throw projectors that do that cause I know the all do 16:9?
