Nigel Hawthorne is still unsurpassed in his portrayal of Sir Humphrey. Truly one of the greatest characters ever portrayed in television

I totally agree. He mastered the art of smooth delivery with the sly view of do what I want and not yours. Loved it.
The BBC got it right with this series. Excellent comedy, excellent actors.
Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister is as relevant today as it was forty years ago. A comedy written for an intelligent, well-informed public.

@@lilymarinovic1644 what are you saying, Boris Johnson literally used the same argument Hacker used for Brexit, their idea of internal inquiry is also a derivative, if they copy any more the public will be made complete fools.
This series was and will remain unsurpassed.
An absolute gem of a show with shining performances from all the cast - main and supporting characters - writing - just as relevant 40-45 years later.

This could be today, timeless humour, well written, performed and produced, never bettered, or even likely to be.
It began as a comedy and ended up a documentary.
I watched this series first time in about 2021, and it was to my amazement to find that it was made many tens of years ago. Yet it seemed as relevant as ever. Fantastic gem of a show.

Yes, the pilot episode was actually recorded in 1979 just before the UK general election. The election sadly made the pilot episode not being aired, and instead the BBC gave permission to record six further episodes to provide a full series. That was filmed in the autumn of 1979, and the first series aired in Jan 1980.

A piece of political fiction actually more coherently making sense than actual current politics. Says a lot. Great piece of television history...the series.

The civil service nowadays is so underpaid and understaffed they outsource most of the proposal draftings to the private consultants, at an eyewatering cost.

A lot of these ideas for the episodes came from actual situations that occurred in government. The writers had 2 informants from within Whitehall who provided real situations. This is how the writers achieved the accurate language and portrayal of the Civil Service at the time. It hasn't changed much either.
Nigel Hawthorne as archdeacon Grantley in the Barchester Chronicles is amazing too.
“Welcome to the standing committee lol
Reminds me of the Marx Bros crowded cabin scene from 'A Night at the Opera' 😁
“Not egg, minister, just imperialist yoke” 😂 So simultaneously brilliant and stupid
I believe that Diana Huddenott is the only regular actor still alive, John Nettleton, (Humphreys boss) died earier this year.
One might call this a documentary. However, the situation in the Civil Service nowadays is far, far worse than this.
I loved the little "what? - what?" moments 25:37 in the first series
Simply wonderful 😊nothing changes does it ? 😂😂
Most of the political maneuvering is applicable to US politics. I have personally use some of these techniques to great success. The writing is superb. Thank you

Yes, minister and Yes, Prime minister were run on JRT - Yugoslav Radio and Tele. network, in the Years of BBC production. The same goes for Only fools and horses and Blackadder and many other British Series. The beggining was in early 70s with comedy In the Bus. Some 15 Years ago Serbian version o Blackadder was made in 2 Series.
I really need to pick this series up, it's worth owning a hard copy of, and I didn't know til now they had their own version of the Marx Bros immortal Stateroom Scene

Well, one must tread with great caution when it comes to the concept of open government, dear viewers. While transparency and accountability are certainly important virtues, we must not forget that there are certain matters that are best left undisclosed for the greater good of the state. The dangers of divulging sensitive information cannot be understated, as it can lead to disastrous consequences for national security and public interest. Moreover, the public's demand for transparency can often be misguided, as they may not have the necessary expertise or understanding to fully comprehend the complexities of government decision-making. So, while open government may seem like a noble goal, we must be wary of the potential pitfalls that come with it.
O my god........😂😂😂😂😂😂
Only Sir Humphrey has the ability to steer UK out of the mess it finds itself in presently
god like
I thought Humphrey's name was Humpty for the longest time. I'm not a native english speaker so I always thought the british accents pronounced Humpty as "Hamfrie" and it is not until later while seeing his name written down when I finally understood that he had a more respectable name.
I wonder what Sir Humphrey would think about this government.
