What helped make these series great was that Eddington, Hawthorne, and Fowlds basically developed each of their characters themselves. Eddington's facial mannerisms for example.

Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn in my opinion wrote the funniest scripts that I have ever been fortunate to enjoy. How Paul Eddington, Nigel Hawthorne and Derek Fowlds managed to deliver such complex lines with such ease is beyond me. Their impact was enough to make me warm to politicians - well almost!

The combination of great character writing, brilliant character acting and enough inside information to weave in just to make situations more real than just some writers with no inside experience going at it. All the main cast play their characters so well it's almost criminal.

This series gave me so much insight into how governments work. Every government and civil service are doing as much as possible to look good without actually having to do much. Publicity, headlines, avoiding scandals is all they think of. In democracies and autocracies alike. I don't think people, especially in the west, realise how incompetent their governments are. Or at least when compared to their so called enemies

English comedy seems to target the over 12 year old crowd, unlike American sitcoms. There are so-called comedians here in the USA that I’ve never laughed at, like Tim Allen, I did not even know he was a comedian for years, Jerry Lee Lewis never made me laugh, even when I was a little kid … Sir Humphrey’s description of government duties that I like the best is, when he said to the minister, -the job of government is not to solve problems Minister, -the job of government is to explain to the people why problems can’t be solved.
