Instead of using his classic Wolverine as the starting character (Morrigan utterly destroyed him time and time again during the year), he used Storm as the tip of the spear instead (She has better aerial mobility, and could evade and somewhat counter Morrigan a bit better). That little huge change, gave him that little edge in the matchup that ended up finally giving him that iconic victory. PS: Ironically, Chris G was the demon that Jwong had to defeat in 2014. Just the next year, Jwong himself was the demon that KBR (KBR never had defeated JW in a tourney before that point) had to beat in 2015.

Man, the year of ChrisG shutting everything down was crazy. It's impossible to describe how depressed and discouraged everybody was. He made Justin Wong feel the way Justin had made Yipes and Sanford Kelly feel in MvC2, and that's saying something.

really fun to watch this since i got into the fgc a couple years ago and chris is The Guy at my locals.

I miss prbalrog playing like a very skilled lunatic in mvc3/umvc3. I think it was ect, but it was one of the early umvc3 majors. He was playing like such an animal in the finals with wolverine. It was so funny and great to see. There was so much wrong going on in the tourney scene during the like 4-5 years post sf4, but the 2-3 years towards the end of umvc3 were buckwild.

What was “wrong”?

Still in shock I was featured there amongst those names, hype watching you go over it Max. Btw the Wolvy Berserker Barrage X super does less than the Fatal Claw super, but it also lasts longer. The extension with Dark Hole into Barrage H xx Fatal Claw leave Dorm still on recovery throughout the super, only becoming available to DHC in once Wolverine starts falling. Barrage X lasts long enough that I'm guaranteed to not to fumble the DHC and drop the combo. Worth the damage loss to get the kill at Evo, but it also leaves me closer to the corner and makes the next mixup less optimal too so it's a trade off.

Wolverine was so good in vanilla Marvel 3 they added a specific move in Ultimate to nerf mashers.

Marvel 3 in 2014 is special for me as It was the one year I was actually watching from the audience. The JWong vs ChrisG match is something I will never forget

I can't believe how many years its been since I discovered Max via top 5 EVO moments, it's the first time I learned how much HYPE existed around fighting games!

Another note about Super Skrull is that the reason he has fire powers was as a result of utilizing the powers of the Fantastic Four due to his biological Skrull abilities. This also gave him aspects of other members’ powers that made it into the moveset, such as Mr. Fantastic’s stretching.

Yea originally Capcom wanted all the F4 in the game as one character but Marvel said no. They thought about using The Thing but too “similar to hulk”. Human Torch always being on fire slowed/glitched the game out so marvel suggested Super Skrull which in my opinion was a better choice. He was my favorite character to ply in this game. A bunch of the heroes and heralds cards are characters Capcom wanted or was in the development process to put in the game.

UMVC3 was the first fighting game I played in a "serious" capacity, and all of that is largely because of you Max. I vividly remember picking the copy up from my local estore at a bottom shelf, with Phoenix Wright on the cover pointing up at me. I also vividly remember a good while after getting fed up with the horrible online, x factor and the imbalance that I ended up trading in my game. UMVC3 is a game I love to this day, but I would probably never play it again unless if it was with a group of people.

It was a treat to see Marvel 3 again at this years Evo. Marvel has always been enjoyable to watch.

Was too young for Marvel 3. Like i knew of it but I was born in 98. I remember watching some of these old clips. By far one of the coolest and hype fighting games to watch ever. So many storirs and comebacks. Even to this day with mods and stuff it lives on.

two quick notes here: 1) i feel like many people arent aware of how much more epic justins 2014 win was. he didnt just beat chris g and f champ. he also beat flocker and kaneblueriver, 2 past and 2 future evo winners, and didnt get sent to top 8 losers bracket in the process. he basically climbed the highest mountain while overcoming EVERY hardest obstacle in the process. 2) crazy idea with this one but they should have put in apologymans 2014 match vs ta wolf instead where he pulled off a literal triple perfect with his firebrand/doom/super skrull team.

If I remember right, I believe Zak Bennett discovered the Skrull Firebrand duo, it's just that Apologyman took that team and really put in work with it. That team was so demoralizing lmao

marvel 3 was my gateway into fighting games as a whole. and the assist me series about the game led me into the max rabbit hole. most of my childhood gaming years is tied to this game and i will forever love it because of it

Man MVC3 was at it's best when the meta was developing and you were just seeing people like first-time showing off characters we've never seen before in tournaments. That shit was crazy. I still love the game but it's not the same seeing everyone totally optimized with infinites and Zero teams everywhere.

Man this was (and still) the game for us. Every weekend there was a WWE or UFC/boxing ppv we'd order doordash and bring like 12 packs of energy drinks (no alcohol) and go full Kyle. 48+ hours of no sleep. Just irl fights on one TV and Marvel matches with fgc tourneys in the background all weekend. We always tried the new SF or SC or MK but it always came back to this(and screaming, and property destruction, and mental breakdowns, and angry spouses.. until they played😂, then they were REEeeing)

2011-2015 Marvel 3 tourney streams and EVOs were peak entertainment for the FGC and it’s never been the same since. i also always loved the old setup in the big hotel lobby , im not really a fan of the EVO in stadium arenas that they’ve been doing for the past 5 years or so.

on a personal level, seeing ChrisG here is wild to me since i see him every week at the Luxor recently and actually fought him (then got massacred) lol

I played on 360, but I had a chronus converter to play with a ps3 controller. I can’t imagine actually using the Dpad on a 360 controller.

21:26 That's still the case to this day 😅 It even got to the point that Epic is working directly with Sony to being down the Input Delay they have on PlayStation. I almost think that Sony Had to buy Evo to remain relavent in specific Gaming Markets, in this case in fighters.

This game will be hard to find and play in the future. Just like MvC2. A licensing nightmare. I've got multiple copies of the game on both PS3 and X360 in preparation. 😊
