These roundup videos are the best that Hardware Canucks make. That's exactly the kind of content I'm looking for when I ask: "I have X case, what is the best I can fit in there". I can find my pick according to performance, price, noise, or a balance of those, all within this video. More like these please, for other components: GPUs, motherboards, mice, etc...

@@HardwareCanucks Totally do this, lot's of cases (like Meshlicious) have a 70 to 77 clearance. For those cases it can be optimal to put a quality 120x25mm fan on top. That's why it would be awesome (but a bit more work) if you could just normalize the tests by putting an A12x25 fan on top. Test the coolers, not the fans. True enthousiasts like us will always replace the stock fans by either a P12 or A12

For anyone looking for the IS-50X v2, ID Cooling is selling it directly from them via Newegg. Unfortunately it ships from China so you'll have to wait around a month, but I can't recommend it enough. If you're using it with an AMD system make sure to get Noctua's AM4 backplate kit, otherwise you risk flexing your motherboard if you overtighten the mounting screws. ID Cooling does have an AM4 backplate kit, but it's not as good as Noctua's. I used the IS-60 non-EVO, which is the predecessor to the IS-50X v2, in a Fractal Design Node 202 with a 5700G for quite a few compact livestreaming builds. It kept the 5700G from getting above 80C in full stress tests even with the limited airflow of the Node 202, so I'm glad to see that it has a successor. One thing of note: I had to replace the IS-60 non-EVO's stock fan with a Noctua NF-A12x15 to keep the fan blades from scraping against the dust filter of the Node 202. It doesn't look like the IS-50X v2 will have that issue since it's using a different fan that includes rubber vibration pads, but it's something to keep in mind.

You can squeeze a few degrees better performance with IS-60 EVO and Blackridge if you use a backplate. I use Noctua L9a backplate for AM4. On intel side it's a bit difficult since Therlmalright AXP90 backplate has changed a bit to use smaller diameter screw. But recently ID-Cooling has released new IS-47S with backplate, it looked like a good product.

I'd like to give you big kudos for making videos like these. I'm doing some build planning again and this type of data is very helpful. HOWEVER, I'd like to make an important, but kind of subtle point. For some of us who are pretty deep into getting the best possible build, we are only looking for data on the performance of the heatsinks themselves, because we will be using noctua (or whatever else is best) fans on them. So if the comparison is done with only the stock fan (and this is completely the only reasonable default comparison point!), then the data is unfortunately invalid to do the comparisons from my perspective. A cooler with abysmal performance could just have a terrible fan. Very related to this is that the excellent performance of Noctua products in these comparisons is largely (and the exact extent is not quantified either) because of the superior performance of Noctua fans. I know this is a fairly tall order and would require many things to change in order to address, but I feel like if you're going far enough to do the (fantastic!) two dimensional temp/decibel graphs, then you're probably catering to this audience, and I just wanted to make you aware that the use of unknown quantity stock fans makes the data largely invalid. But only to this audience. Unfortunately. It's still totally valid to the more normal audience that would not bother mix and matching fans though. Another fly in the ointment for me right now (planning for a Velka 7 where I'd be squeezing into that exact 47mm of clearance) is the issue of case side panel turbulence. I'm comparing AXP90-X47 with Alpenfohn Black Ridge, and this aspect will disproportionately penalize the AXP90. Since there is no additional space between the side panel and the intake fan, the blades will become much less effective at scooping up air and airflow is likely to drop precipitously while noise also increases. Because I have not been able to find on the internet any quantitative data on the impact of putting on the side panel for an AXP90 I'm unfortunately not able to determine which cooler to choose.

I have to agree that the IS-50 is one of the best low profile cooler that is also affordable. I’ve used one of it before, and where the some low profile coolers cannot make it causing very high 80s to 90s degrees celcius (and even shutdown), the IS-50 kept the processor in the 70s. Comparing it with the bigger Noctua cooler, I feel the reasons why the Noctua can’t keep up is because,(1) smaller fan which does not cover the heatsink, and, (2) bottom mount fan which I generally feel is ineffective when compared to mounting the fan on top of the heatsink and blowing downwards into the fin stack. That is why the IS-50 is giving very stiff competition despite being lower in profile. As for the IS-60 EVO, I suspect if you remove the bottom mount fan, the noise level will go down since there is only 1 fan left and the smaller fan is actually noisier due to the higher RPM, with with little impact to the cooling performance.

currently running an R9-7950X with an IS-55 inside using Kryonaut Extreme thermal compound inside of a Lian Li A4 H20 I run the 105 Watt Eco mode and even with Prime95 running a stress test i'm able to keep it at 90C at the most. Which of course is quite high but considering at stock the cpu tries to achieve 95c I think 90c is pretty good. I changed the Max Temperature before the cpu throttles to the stock 95 degrees while actually running at Eco. It allowed me to score about 34,500 in Cinebench R23 multi core score after a 30 minute run while never breaking 89c. I'm quite happy with these results considering PBO results are somewhere around 38,000. Just gotta be okay with letting it heat up a bit.

I want a downdraft cooler for a standard case and of course I'd like it to perform well. I have room for a better thicker finstack and a regular or even extra thick 120mm fan but as far as I know, nobody is making such a cooler. Even the CM 71C if the extrusion and copper core were 4 inches tall would make me happy. The Stealth cooler is not bad at 65W in my little 5600G APU box MSI Pro DP20Z, it's practically a test bench situation, practically touching the grill for fresh air and the case is so small that hot air is blown directly out, working so well I can even overclock the graphics and ram with Ryzen Master.

I went from a coolermaster tower to the K12 and the difference in cooling is night and day... not only is my core temperatures lower across the board, but I've literally pegged my processor with an artificial load for an hour and the temps would not exceed 44C while the coolermaster was always sitting at 70C from how poorly it mated to the die.

Looking into the Question: "If I can't fit a 120 mm Fan Tower-Cooler what is my best Option? Is it a 92 mm Tower cooler or is it a thicker or fanj swaped top blower cooler?" Would a Noctua NH-D9L obliterate this test linup?

Thermalright SS110 is a better choice for performance and looks IMO(they come in all white or black). Their new TL-B9 92mm fans are also better than NF-A9's even when noise normalized according to Chinese reviewers.

I wish you guys would test DeepCool's AS500 PLUS single-tower cooler. They say it's great for the 5950X and goes toe-to-toe against even the Noctua and Assassin III. Nobody seems to have done a proper review of it since they already tested the AS500 which is the single fan version. I find it odd that for all the praise, I've never seen it in the fan tier videos of most popular PC tech KZreadrs since it came out. Only KitGuru mentions it a bit.

Hi @HardwareCanucks, Thanks for the video and exhaustive review. Probably the best thing over all LPCs is missing and you may be interested to check and test it out. Alpenfohn Black Ridge cooler with Noctua NF-A9x14 under and NF-A12x25 on top. It gives the best performance in low profile air cooling segment with only 72mm of height. Another thing you forgot to mention - thermal paste. You probably didn't use the OEM ones and it gives a huge difference in performance. I have IS-60V2 (which is very very similar to IS-50XV2) paired with my Ryzen 5 3600. And with OEM ID-Cooling thermal paste it sucks. It makes my R5 3500 fry at 95-96 Celcius in AIDA CPU+FPU stress test. So if you go with ID-Cooling stuff, be ready to buy a syringe of Cryonaut or Arctic MX-4. One idea for your further videos and tests if you don't mind - 140mm AIOs. It is a good option for some miniITX builds and increases potential for CPU upgrade.
