The Best High School Point Guard In The World | Dylan Harper Film Breakdown & Scouting Report

Dylan Harper is the best point guard in all of high school basketball. It’s safe to say that Harper has the highest basketball IQ in the 2024 McDonald’s All-American class.
Similar to Jalen Brunson, Harper plays at his own pace on the offensive end. He uses his IQ with ball fakes and footwork analysis to manipulate the defense to move where he wants them to and is aggressive with his offensive attack.
Harper initiates physical contact on his drives and has the dexterity to finish over elite rim protectors with both hands. Harper is patient when initiating his offensive moves and is a very willing passer.
Harper already reads ball screens at a NBA level and quickly progresses through his reads before making the right basketball play 80-85% of the time.
Harper is a very intelligent defensive player and puts in a high amount of effort on that end of the floor. He understands off ball rotations, roll man tags, controlled closeouts, when to take calculated risks and willingly sacrifices his body for his team.
Harper’s shoots the 3 at good clip for a high school guard. As a left handed shooter, his left elbow sticks out too much which causes the ball to veer right. He overcompensates with his right hand which leads to a lot of misses on the right side of the rim. His feet are rarely square with the basket and he has slow release in catch & shoot situations.
For his skillset and IQ, Harper’s body language is unacceptable. Being a NBA Player’s and Coach’s son, he needs to develop a stoic presence on the court because his talent will automatically make him a leader on whatever team he is on.

🤔 Who Am I?
If this is your first time here, Welcome To The Pond 🦆🦢. I’m a former Division I College Basketball Coach (VCU & Jacksonville) and I was the Director Of Recruiting & Advance Scouting at high school basketball powerhouse Montverde Academy. During that time I sent 6 Players to the NBA and 53 players Division I.
After years of working in grassroots, high school and college basketball, I wanted to take control of my own career and decided to be an entrepreneur. I studied music marketing and released 3 solo albums under my artist name “Dorian”. My 3rd album, “True Support”, charted #1 on iTunes and accumulated millions of streams. While I was learning about the music industry, I made videos educating other independent artists as well with many of them going viral across the 5 major social media platforms.
God has re-directed my path and has me focused on my original goal, to make the NBA. I aspire to be G League coach as the entry point for the NBA. My goal is for build patriarchs through the game of basketball.

Your knowledge on shooting is outdated. The majority of elite shooters, shoot with their feet turned to relieve tension, and his shooting elbow being out during the shot isn't a problem (as long as he isn't rushing to get his elbow in) becuase you only need to be aligned as you're releasing the ball. Also, the reason he kicked his leg to the side on that pull-up was because it was acting as a counterweight to his momentum as he was drifting left. Kobe, MJ, Curry, etc all kick their leg like that when they're shooting inside out pull-ups moving towards their dominant hand side. Smooth energy tranfer and being familair with multiple footworks into your shot are by far the most important factors.

That shot you're alluding to he bricked hard right with no chance for an offensive rebound. There is no sensical position backed by film & data that shows landing on one leg is going to increase shot efficiency. Shooting is about being consistent with your mechanics every single time. The release is the most important. Reggie Miller showed that in the 80's with his horrific shooting form and mechanics, but his release was the exact same every single time. When players are developing their shooting form, doing the same thing over and over again is what develops a foundation based off of muscle memory. When analyzing high school prospects, they are still developing their foundation. This is something that is learned from actually coaching and developing players hands on vs watching them on film. I would implore you to watch young Kobe, MJ and Steph Curry's shooting forms when they were developing their foundation. See what was added year after year when they got to the league. See what their final shooting form was at their prime. Skipping fundamentals at this level will compound mistakes once the margin of error is slim in the NBA. I'm looking forward to your film breakdown.

You can't compare elite shooters to a high school kid. The players you named are all top 5 shot makers in history.... they did that by mastering the fundamentals before trying new things brother. There's a reason Lonzo was forced to change his shot form when he got to the league. When you're not fundamentally sound, it will be exposed when playing at a higher level. If not, then you're just reinforcing habits that won't work against tougher competition.
I normally agree with the majority of your takes but i think you should dive deeper into shooting mechanics that the new gen players are utilizing. Dylans mechanics are similar to brunsons because they are effective and if u look at a lot of hoopers they all turn their feet. Nobody is squared to the basket anymore and a lot of shooters also are utilizing lower release points similar to dylans. Other than that great analysis as always

amazing video man, been trying to incorporate attacking that top foot and blowing by like how he does with his delay tweens or twitches into his tweens and then blowing by attacking that top foot, also using that off arm to hold the shot blockers off from you. I feel like Dharp is one of the best players for me to study because I am a shorter guard wanting to make the league aswell. I feel like major thing I struggle with is remembering to use that off arm to shield off and attack that top foot when your defender gives you it. What do you think I can do that will help me be able to implement this into my game naturally and help my game expand as a shorter guard?

Dropping your hip level all together will help you play lower. Do full court lunges. Try to get your knee to barely tap the floor. That will help you develop the muscle memory in your legs where you will only play want to play basketball that low. Take on the mentality of a physical player. Use your off arm in everything you do. Think about initiating contact and imposing your will. Take pride in causing natural basketball pain.
Love the breakdown unc. Can you do a video on UNC Commit Drake Powell? From the small clips I’ve seen he could be a dark horse candidate for the top pick
Great video and breakdown. Thanks. What an all around game he has. At the end you said “at this stage of your development you are the best high school basketball player in the world.” Is that your current belief regardless of position, or did you mean only point guard? Just curious.

Great video. I have watched Dylan live since his freshman year and in more than 10 games this season. #35 for Don Bosco is Brady Loughlin a 6’5” class of 2025 college prospect. He may have shot an air ball in the video you watched, but he has been a solid player on a state championship team who shot 44% for 3 pointers and made 80 3’s this season. @DorianGroup82
4 ай бұрын
Wherever your feet are pointing that’s where your shoulders are pointing. Wherever your shoulders are pointing, that’s where the ball is going to go. Thats why with great NBA shooters whenever their legs aren’t square to the rim, they make sure their shoulders are. Dylan needs to master knocking down open shots with his feet/shoulders square everytime. This will give him a great foundation to hit more difficult shots in the NBA where he is going to have to internationally torque his lower body to get shots off.
Can you do Brandon McCoy
I remember my 2nd jv game I had like 10 turnovers tryna pass it back to the point. Now I dont turn it over, but I dont exactly create an advantage for my team either. How can I get through a trap as a small guard 5'11.. its obviously easier for dylan harper because he 6'5 and can just see over them
@DorianGroup82
4 ай бұрын
Each trap is a case by case basis to defeat. I’d have to see film. A few things are universal: 1. Read the trap early. See who is coming off to trap and tell your man to get to the open space of the floor 2. Hit a big for a quick DHO. Trappers follow the ball. Look up pistol action on KZread. 3. Get low and attack the slowest man’s outside hip. Even if you have to dribble along to sideline to stay alive, keep attacking. He’ll eventually fall back or you’ll get past him. Steve Nash was great at this. Ask your coach to watch film with you and work on trap escape scenarios before and after practice.

Long as that upper release is consistent all that matters is how you exert enough energy from whatever base you’re shooting from to maintain consistent power/touch ratio. I’m a long lost splash bro. Trust me bro😂 🫡
Are you saying his feet are turning too much? because a turn is natural
