I love your videos. I got the grafting bug last fall and have watched many, many of your videos. 2 weeks ago on Easter I grafted about 8 grafts. I just checked 3 of them (14 days later) and all three took nicely and are budding green. thank you for your simple and straight forward videos.

I started grafting on my apple and peach trees this spring and they are doing very well. I was surprised at how much growth I got on the scions in one season. Your videos were a huge resource for me to get the courage to make those first cuts. I started with whip and tongue and cleft grafts. I did some bud grafting on peaches this summer and even did an inarch graft on an ailing peach tree to bypass some trunk damage. I have three people lined up already to teach grafting to this coming year. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us.

What happens if you let it the full length, like 40 cm and not cut the tip? 2. Does it make a difference, whether you graft the Rootstock 15 cm above ground or 40 cm above ground?

Stone fruits are a bit more delicate when grafting established trees. Budding (chip-budding and T-budding) usually produces the best results.

I'm puzzled: as the cambial layer is on the stock and on the bark, why not expose both sides of the scion completely when making modified cleft grafts and rind/bark grafts. I've only seen this done on the Skillcult and Stephen Hayes channels, but it makes sense to me - more cambial contact and quicker, cleaner healing. Am I missing something?

Great video - I referred to your videos when I grafted 400 apple trees this past spring, and they did well. One question: do you find that wrapping the whole scion in parafilm (not just the cut section and the tip) significantly improves success rate? That's great!! Regarding your question...It depends on ambient conditions. If there is a chance that they might suffer from dehydration, its a definitive plus. When the plants are still dormant and there is little risk of the scions losing moisture I only cover the graft. Interstem grafting - Good idea. That's an important topic. I will add your suggestion to my list of future videos. Thanks for the comment.

Hi, I have a nice 2m long pear whip on QuA rootstock which also has an inter-stem graft, (double worked rods). Im going to espalier this one, two others and four apples. It seems a shame to waste the majority of the whip length which gets cut above three good looking buds much lower down the whip. I don't have any other rootstock available BUT what could I do with the long piece of whip once I cut it off? This would make great scion wood if I had some rootstock. Its 1 and 1/2 weeks into spring here in New Zealand and the buds have not broken yet on either the pears or apples.

I have several pear trees of different varieties grafted on quince. Many pear varieties will grow quite well grafted to this rootstock although some might be incompatible. In this video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZtq1aadZc-rhpc.html - I am grafting a pear variety to a quince rootstock using the wedge grafting technique, but bark grafting will also work well and its easier to perform.

can you recommend the best rootstock to graft loquat onto, I have an older plum tree which produses few plums, what could I graft onto that?

Muchas gracias. Si, ya he injertado nogal con suceso. Varios métodos pueden funcionar, incluso la hendidura modificada. Pero, es preferible injertar a corona en final de primavera. Why do you use natural raffia? Will a normal string work?

In the video you mentioned that sometimes compatibility between the rootstock and scion can be a problem when grafting pears. Wild callery pears are common where I live can you recommend Asian pear varieties that would be compatible?

Pyrus calleryana is usually compatible with most european and asian pear varieties. In my orchard, I have my asian pears grafted on Pyrus communis and some grafted directly on older pear varieties. Unfortunately, wild callery have, in most cases, variations that made them incompatible with many varieties. I could not predict which asian pear varieties will work, if any... You can experiment for yourself but be prepared for a high degree of incompatibility...

I would wait for early spring. Most grafting techniques work well with the rootstock leaving dormancy (the sap has to be flowing to provide nutrients for graft healing).

What's the name of that material you are using to tie the graft union.

Where should we make the cut in scion and stock with respect to the bud

I have a 15 years old red grapevine that I want to change to a white variety. I’ve tried for two year with no success. I’ve tried chip budding and other methods. How do I see on the recipient plant when it’s the best time to graft on the new variety? Any suggestions on how to go about grafting grapevines? Cheers from Denmark.

Para Nespereiras podem-se utilizar estes dois métodos, mas como os garfos são um pouco frágeis, a técnica não é tão fácil de executar (este video antigo, só disponível com legendas, tem alguns exemplos - kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYiTz6d6gLXUZpM.html). Também funciona bem a técnica da enxertia lateral subcortical. __________________________ Thanks, Luís. For Loquats you can use these two methods, but as the scions are a little fragile, the technique is not so easy to perform (this old video, only available with subtitles, has some examples - youtu .be/sT_mEAPRn60). The lateral subcortical grafting technique also works well.

Its increasingly difficult to find it. Try Amazon - search for "Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape" and beware of cheap plastic imitations. Parafilm is biodegradable and breathable.

Utilizando o método tradicional de enraizamento (enterrar o ramo deitado, deixando apenas uma ponta acima do solo) costuma funcionar. Mas convém ser um ramo com 1 ou 2 anos, no máximo. ________________________________ Using the traditional rooting method (burying the branch lying down, leaving only one small tip above the ground) usually works. But it should be a branch 1 or 2 years old, at the most.

What is the name of the string (or product) you’re using to tie the graft union, please?

This past fall I found a bunch of wild (?) apple seedlings. I am wondering if I should dig them up and transplant them to a better site? Also, if I transplant them when should I be able to graft to them? These seedlings are smaller diameter than a pencil and between 6 and 10 inches tall. I am new to grafting and very excited about it..

Yes, you can transplant them to a better site. I would wait until they are at pencil diameter before grafting them. You can graft with success thinner rootstocks, but mainly in pots, so you can control all the process. In the field its a bit more complicated...

En été je prefere les techniques de "Budding".

I think the modified cleft technique could be enhanced by a tongue, the same way as the first technique. The tongue has benefits, so if diameter difference is at most 1:2, it could be done that way (i.e. cleft with a tongue).

If the variety you want to graft is scab resistant you can graft it into the Macintosh apple tree. The new growth will produce the wild apple and the scab resistance will be the same. Rootstocks can influence fruit size, precocity, etc, all factors that have to do with flowing nutrients and minerals, but scab resistance is essentially genetic, so the rootstock will have almost no interference.

The best scions are from young wood (1 year old or less). They should be harvested from the middle of a young vigorous branch and the buds should be wood buds (not fruit buds). You can store them in the vegetable drawer of the fridge. Apples and pears can be stored for 2 or 3 months wrapped in kitchen film. Other more delicate fruit types might deteriorate faster. That means I can select scion while dormant pruning in January and possibly use it mid-March/early-April. Thanks!

That's right. From January until March-April they should be fine. Wrap each scion individually, with the plastic film, for better results and don't add any moisture. Adding pieces of wet paper will only cause fungus growth, that will end up rendering your scions useless. The scions have all the moisture they will need inside them. Its only a matter of maintaining it. That's the job of the plastic film.

Usually, after 2-3 weeks. As soon as the graft takes and we see the bud pocking through the parafilm. The young leaves need light to keep growing.

Sorry. I can't send scions. Exporting scions requires lots of burocracy, quarantine and legal documents, like a phytosanitary certificate to go along the plant material. Obtaining it, takes many months and its quite expensive. With all that burocracy I stopped trying, a few years ago.

Grafting in the home orchard is not a race. Furthermore, I'm trying to show people how to graft. So, grafting quicker is not very helpful to people understanding the technique steps.
