Nice thumbnail. Looking good, my friend! 😘 My top 5 most played games last year were Hens, My City, Grand Austria Hotel, Dorf Romantik, and Ultimate Railroads which tied with Meadows. So it's safe to say those were among my best games that I played.

Love Planet Unknown! It's my current obsession on BGA, will definitely make my list of new to me games for 2024

I am excited for Endeavor Deep sea, I enjoyed Age of Sail (not the slavery cards tho), and looking forward to this new one. I really need to play Anno soon and love Revive.

Root is my favorite game!! I played it 50+ times last year, which included a weekly session for a few months. This year I'm playing monthly sessions, so it's not hitting the table nearly as much, but I have been playing the digital version asynchronously usually a few times per month. Dune: Imperium is in my top 5. It was super fun playing it at Level Up Retreat. I'm loving Uprising this year too. Thanks for telling us about Scram! I picked it up last month for $5 during an online sale, and played it with friends the other day. Everyone really like it!! What a great little gem. I got City of the Great Machine last year after hearing you rave about it. It's only gotten to the table a handful of times, and mostly solo, but I'm hoping to introduce it to more friends in the coming months. Last year was my first time playing Anachrony, and I liked it a lot. A friend has the deluxe version, so I don't imagine I'd ever get a copy, but I'm definitely hoping for more plays of this. My girlfriend got Revive a few months ago. We finally tried it about a month ago, and it's been my favorite new game this spring and might make my Top 5 for the year. We liked the campaign. It was a nice way to learn the game and quick enough to play through with just the two of us before teaching all the rules (starting rules and unlocked rules) to others. But now that we know all the rules, it is easy enough to teach it all to new players. My one criticism is the rulebook, which felt like it was lacking in clarity, and it took us the entire campaign to realize we had misunderstood some of general rules (for example, you can only populate in a "location" but didn't realize that the only locations defined as a "location" were the ruins spaces and the large locations, so we were populating everywhere during the first game), so I guess it was nice to start with less rules since the rules were unclear in some major spots. And right now Scholars of the South Tigris is my favorite new game this year.

Oh, and soon after the new year, I did make a Top 5 list of sorts for my favorite games from 2023. Might need some refinement, but overall it's: 1. Root 2. Scythe (Fenris campaign in particular) 3. Star Wars Rebellion 4. Game of Thrones: The Board Game - 2nd Edition 5. Dwellings of Eldervale

Blocked out Night Cage, again? Is it related to the incident in the mines when trying to save the family members kidnapped by bears?

Good video. My best new game this year is: Great Western Trail New Zealand. It has a good balance between tactics and strategy and it is fun to play. My best adapted game: Scarface 1920 with house rules. The original rules makes the game boring. And the light game, new for me, was: Kingdomino. I never wanted to play this game, but after doing it, I got myself a copy. It is a very fast, fun little game and now I think I want to try World Wonders because of it.

We just played city of the great machine yesterday for the first time! It was a 3 player coop game however. We all enjoyed it a lot, great mechanics and game flow. One of the players really wants to play again but as the machine. The way he said it was pretty scary…

One of my favorite things about modern board gaming is that the breadth of choices out there means there really is something for everyone. I played and enjoyed both Anachrony and Planet Unknown, but they just didn't hit for me the way they clearly have for others. And that's OK! I love that they're bringing so many people joy. I think my favorite "new-new" game of last year was `Ostia`; I'm a man of simple pleasures, and pushing cubes around sets my brain all a-tingle. On the other hand, `Castles of Burgundy` and `Ra` were also new to me last year, and... man, those are friggin' *great*.

Oh yeah I've been loving Ra, especially with experiencing more of it due to WSBG. Have you played Trajan? Ostia reminded me a lot of that one.

@@RoomandBoardReviews Yeah, the designer of Ostia explicitly called out Trajan as an inspiration for the game. I haven't gotten a chance to try Trajan yet; I'd really like to, but I don't know anyone who owns it, and I have too many unplayed games on my shelf already to justify buying my own copy.

Kinfire Chronicles might be better than Gloomhaven for me. The boost system and deck construction is just so clean. And playtime is literally max an hour per quest.

I agree. It just edges out Gloomhaven for me. It feels more cooperative due to the boost system. The deck construction is cleaner and allows for fun synergies. And, it's so easy to get to the table.

Off topic (or maybe slightly on topic, as it was a game I played for the first time recently, although I think it was this year, not last year) but what do you think of Fractured Sky: Rift? It’s only 30 bucks and I think it adds a very interesting mechanic to the game.

I dislike dune imperium. After playing it a couple dozen times, I felt the randomness of how I won and lost just not appealing. Quacks is even worse. I guess not every game is for everybody and those games are not for me.
