The BEST food for Great Danes | Great Dane Care

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Trying to pick the best food for your Great Dane is one of the most common questions for new owners! Getting the proper nutrients is incredibly important to the health and development of Great Danes, and when done wrong can lead to growth-related health issues.
While a raw diet or home-cooked approach to meals can 100% produce good results, they require more preparation and planning than dry dog kibble. For this reason, many busy families will be better off by serving their Great Dane a high-quality dry kibble.
In this video, we walk through the key criteria to consider when choosing a dry kibble for your Great Dane and also make a recommendation for our personal favorite food.
For those that are opposed to dry kibbles, you should consider a personalized meal service like Ollie to ensure that your dog is consistently getting a healthy and balanced diet.

Solid, helpful and valuable information given in your video! Our Great Dane was recently diagnosed with DCM (at 2-years of age!) and having had ONLY grain-free kibble her entire life, the awareness of the risk of dilated cardiomyopathy when using a grain-free kibble diet is important when deciding WHAT to (or what NOT) to feed your GD. She is now on a quality kibble (top ingredients WITH grains) and on several heart medications.

We just had to our baby Thor go to heaven yesterday because of DCM which turned into Conjestive Heart Failure rapidly. He was 9 years and 8 months. Up until approximately 5 weeks ago he was healthy and then that disease took him down. He went from 197 to 156 in a month. We did it at home and it was peaceful but man, our hearts hurt right now. If you're reading this, give your babies and extra hug for me.

Dehydrated Raw has changed my life with my dane!!! The nutrients of raw, the breakdown of ingredients and percentages just like kibble, ans it’s in pellet form so the prep of raw or homemade isn’t there. You can also combine it with regular raw as a meal topper whenever you have the opportunity to because dehydrated raw and regular raw will digest the same. The brand I use is Hurraw, Canadian made. :)

Tried the kibble biscuits with my hounds in the past- expensive- and getting more expensive. My rescued Dane - much loved- all fresh fish , grated vegetables fresh -kale broccoli and spring greens. Fresh chicken and turkey mince- goats milk and eggs- occasionally a little brown rice. Never gets to go to the vet- everyone remarks about his silk like coat and he’s so loves his food. It’s one of his life’s pleasures. The very best quality food is still way cheaper than a visit the vet.

My Dane kept breaking out in spots, similar to what we call hives. After the 3rd break out, my Vet did 4 biopsies and 2 skin scrapes. We found out that Zeus has real bad allergies and we have identified 15 foods plus grass, pollen and other stuff Danes like to get into. Zeus cannot have any wheat based food or treats. Working with my vet, we found a real good kibble for him and has more than what he needs. It is made by Natures Harvest and is completely grain free. There are alot of people food that he cannot have either, sad but what else can you do. Great video.

I raised a great dane on diamond plus, yellow and blue bag, he lived 11 years no issues when he was around 7yrs i started feeding him 1 scoop dry food in the morning and 1 frozen raw chicken leg quarter in the evening, i am currently using the same feeding schedule with my new dane and giant schnauzer, ps. I am on my 5th dane, I reccomend get your dog food from a feed mill, and leg quarters from grocery stores or a butcher raw chicken is totally safe for dogs, give it to them frozen or else they eat it too fast, also raw chicken bones do not splinter in the dog, they also provide calcium wich the dog does not get from dry foods, also set your danes food bowl on a 5gal bucket or similar but the frozen chicken let them eat it how they wish

Thank you for this video!! When I got my first Great Dane I heard they had to have a grain free diet...it’s so untrue! My first Great Dane ended up with low iron because I hadn’t been feeding her any grain. It was horrible! She ended up with no energy and wasn’t gaining weight...it broke my heart! But I did get her on a much better diet and she’s doing much better now! Thank God! It’s so important to make sure they have the diet they need and not some fad diet!!

So much helpful information! Was wondering what your thoughts are on the fact that adult formulas don't contain DHA like the puppy large breed kibbles do. If a puppy formula is only 28% protein, and has DHA, is that more beneficial than sticking to the 27% (or less) protein in the adult formulas that don't have it? Or is DHA really not that important in the overall development of great danes?

We had a GD as a 6mo and the folks at the rescue fed it too much protein for the age. One of her paws did not harden and she actually had "jelly-like" joints from growing too fast due to the over feeding of protein at the rescue. How is the feeding of protein for GDs as they grow-up. The vet said to NOT feed growing mastiff breeds a lot of protein till after 1-2 years of age to allow the bone structure to mature properly- how is your way to avoid this "growing to fast" in the puppy stages look? $3000 and over a year on a very strict low protein diet the paw actually solidified and she ran like a GD after her 4th year. OH you just mentioned it as I was typing! THANK YOU!!!!!!!! HOOOOT!

From 8 weeks to 22 weeks it was 4-5 lbs per weeks and in a week span would grow 1/2 to 3/4". Keep the video's coming as, I believe, we all appreciate your point of view and knowledge. I know I do. I give our Dane, 4 Health Grain Free Kibble. They have grain and grain free recipes different flavors, different veggies etc. Real meat is the first ingredient and was recommended by a breeder in California. I found it at Tractor Supply, it's there recipe and as far as I know they are the only sellers of this product. Levi's been on since 6 weeks old, now going on 7 years and LOVES it! Wonder if anyone else feeds their Danes, this same food. It's also, supposed to be one of the better foods for dogs, but it's affordable. Has all the nutrients and carbs, proteins, fat %'s, etc. to support a Dane and their bone growth, organ funtions for it's entire life.

I bulk cook my dogs food for the week. Organic brown rice organic hard boiled eggs cauliflower peas green beans broccoli squash blueberries sweet potatoes spinach organic bone in beef broth then I change up the protein weekly for what’s on sale some beef or turkey fish rarely chicken. Then I add some supplements my vet recommended. It’s actually cheaper for me to feed them thus healthy compared to buying bagged processed food. I go through a 40lbs bag in around 13 ish days.

It makes me so sad my poor baby (I got her at 6 months) wasn’t being fed correctly and caused a ton of medical problems... then turns out she has grain allergies. She can’t win :(

I have an 3 month old Dane and we’re struggling with meal time. She isn’t finishing her meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner). We’ve tried dehydrated raw and kibble, and we’ve tried to schedule meals and not do free grazing. We’re worried that at such a young age she won’t get the nutrients she needs as she grows, since they grow so quickly in a couple of months. Any tips??

The puppy will eat what it needs to eat, you should not be jumping through hoops to get her to eat. That would teach her that if she doesn't eat you'll add some "extra" to her food and she'll not eat just to see what you do. That could result in health issues. But as long as you aren't letting her train you to add stuff to her food, just leave her food out for 20 minutes and take it up. She will eat what she needs.

My 2yr old Dane suffered massive food allergies his whole life. Severe hair loss over his entire body. Hives. Eventually found a company that does allergy testing of 30 different common allergens. He came back positive to Beef, Venison, Duck. Hes intolerant (gets diarrhoea) if fed salmon, kangaroo, lamb. All red and game meat. Hes now on just grain free chicken and pork. Hes still loosing hair. The vet said it takes 2 months for him to de-tox. Ive decided to cut out pork as well. Its been a long expensive road that never seems to end. Hes my 4th Dane. Never experienced anything like this before. Had another dog from the same breeder. No issues with her. Just got the genetic bad luck dog.

Years ago I owned a deaf Dane, and her name was Neptune because of her beautiful blue star eyes. Since she was a pup I was dedicated to cooking her the most Primium high quality Organic food, unfortunately whenever times were really Ruff, I'd switch to kibble, and it tore through her like pure plastic. So I have purpetually sworn off kibble for Great Danes.

I got a cabin, it's big, built it my self 3 story building in the bush. I wanted a appraisal on my property, an ex Amis girl cane out, dogs out back with the outhouse. Acting crazy. The lady was acting funny alittle, walking weird. I thought she might be pregnant or something. Penguin walking n stuff.

@@matthewferragame2846 normally when you change their food they do get diarrhoea for like less than a week , it’s normal they are just getting used to the new feeding. Had the same with my pup. Just don’t give bones or raw chicken

We have had a hard time finding what is going on with our BIG boy. His skin flakes constantly (even after a bath) and he seems to itch his legs/feet (anywhere he can reach). Poor baby. We are thinking it is his food, I just don't know. Our vet said that chicken is a very high allergen for dogs. Of course our foods first ingredient is Chicken. I spent a lot of time researching to find this company and never thought this would be the problem. SO we are taking the challenge (NOT LIGHTLY) and going to try a new food. I have dragged my feet since changing food for a Dane is a BIG undertaking. Fingers crossed...I am looking for a good solid food, we can afford where CHICKEN isn't the first ingredient. I have to say that your KZread channel was the FIRST place I came for advise...thank Gus for us. ;-)

Sorry to hear your big guy’s having a tough time. While it could be the chicken, it could also very well be other lower quality items near the top of the ingredient list that are causing the issues. While it’s no guarantee, I think looking deeper into his food is smart

Dogs that are prone to allergies will usually develop an allergy to something that is in their food (which makes sense, they wouldn't become allergic to something they haven't ever eaten). Many dog foods have chicken, so that is why many allergic dogs react to chicken. Of course, it could also be some other ingredient in the food that is causing the reaction.

I have a dog that had severe dry and sensitive skin issues for years. Tryed all kinds of different foods, doggy soaps, etc...nothing helped. Had an old boy that used to raise hunting dogs tell me to just start mixing some pig fat, lard, into his food every couple of days to make his skin and coat healthy. So I went to a Mexican store and got some rendered lard, not that hydrogenated stuff, for a few bucks, started putting a spoonful into his food every 2 or 3 days, and after a few weeks I noticed he ain't scratching and rubbing like crazy like he used to anymore. Plus his coat is much more glossy and lays down better, instead of being all dried out and frizzy. Like the keto diet for dogs! ;-) Now all my dogs get a little extra boost.
