This channel has been such a blessing to me over the last few weeks. I was watching a ton of aquascaping videos and eventually ran to my local fish store and grabbed a 10 gallon to pack full of plants. I have small female betta in there now because I was eventually planning on adding other fish possibly (with the help of another one of your videos). I don't have space for any more fish tanks currently and my $10 fish has become priceless to me, so I don't want to add anything else without quarantining first. I think I have a problem though because now I'm plotting about a "heavy duty rack" to hold my current tank, another 10 gallon "quarantine" tank, and a larger "community' tank.. which is probably how you ended up with your fish room, huh?

Out of our 5 tanks currently running, I would say the 75 gallon is my favorite size so far. I am not short and have long arms so it works. I have 2 of them, 1 is used as a kind of center of the house divider. My dream would be to set up a 180 (or bigger) in that spot. I love my 20 tall and refuse to part with it, but have upgraded it twice now to a 75 hahaha. I keep finding other stuff to put in the 20 to keep it going. Maybe I'm partial to it because it was my first "real" fish tank and has been a lot of fun to play with.

75 gallons are my favorite tank so far. Also, I had double stacked 40 breeders. I swapped the bottom 40 breeder out for a 30 breeder, which is 4 inches shorter. So much easier to work with now that I have extra space between the two tanks.

I have a 180 gal planted tank and even at 5' 9" I have a hard time reaching the back of the tank. I usually have to use a step stool. But the tank itself is a show stopper. Anyone who I invite over as soon as they walk into the living room and see the tank is immediately taken aback and becomes quiet and just stares at the tank.

Excellent video, really helps when planning out a fishroom. If you need an idea for a video then a configuration video showing tanks on stands would be great! Example: 75 bottom row 2x40s and 10's up top. Or other configurations to fit predefined spaces such as a 10ft wall, 6ft corner etc

I really like the 40 breeder for planting. After struggling with 12" deep tanks (38gal and 55gal), that extra 6" of depth is a huge benefit! The only drawback with them is that being a 3 foot tank, lighting options aren't as plentiful as with a 4 foot tank. Also, stands are harder to come by and options are limited. I ended up building a stand and canopy for mine (cost about $100 in supplies). Super easy to do if you have a chop saw, a square, a level, and a decent drill.

My personal favorites: -48"x20"x20". You have 70 gallons, but a 4' footprint. -72"x24"x24". (170 gallons) Because you can keep all but the largest fish in it, and you can still easily reach the bottom for aquascaping. Though I find stocking it with "nano" fish is still very appealing with a sprawling planting... Ya, I'm a bit biased towards the plants over the fish lol ( I look for planting space over all else). I've had a number of others, and part of me wants a monster tank for a coral reef system. But those two sizes are my favorite.

Great video! Your 40 breeder vs 55 gallon video really helped me decide which tank was a better fit for my space. So soon I’ll have a 40 breeder set up for the corydoras and neon tetras that are in my 20 long - and then I’ll have to think about what I’d like for the 20 long :) Of course I’ll have finally set up that spur of the moment purchase of a 14 gallon cube (shrimp tank? pea puffer tank?) but that 33 long has my attention, too. Oh boy, I’m in trouble! Thanks for all the great content that you and Joanna put out!

Thanks Jason, interesting video and great ideas. I think most people have a particular fish in mind that impresses them the most. Then they basically have to fashion the tank to suit that fish. torpedo shaped fish like rummy nose tend to travel in straight lines vertically, and do best in longer tanks. Tall fish like angels and discus would probably need taller tanks. Guppy's go everywhere and tank dimensions are not so important. I like to keep more plants than fish, to help with water quality, but I don't like the plants against the glass when I clean the glass, so I just am not a fan of any tank that's only 12 inches front to back. I think the 40 breeder would be my favourite overall for small community fish, and gives you height to go with the deep substrate format, but at around 460 pounds when full, I worry about the weight factor. So, here I am with my 20 long, as a compromise. I do find it pretty narrow and shallow for plants, but its still best for me. thanks and have a good day.

I have 7 aquariums, a 5 gallon for my betta, 10 gallon for my rasboras , 20 gallon for my small goldfish, 29 gallon for my angels and german blue rams, a standard 55 gallon for my bigger goldfish and 2 additional tanks for my hospital, and breeding tank. favorite is 10 gallon. What i like about the 10 gallon is that is easy to maintain and a lot more stocking ideas than the 5 gallon which has the same pros and cons. The bigger tanks, you will have way more stocking ideas but the ten gallon, it's just the perfect tank for beginners.

Super Video! I know that Variatus cameo was for me!! The 40 breeder used to be my fav until I discovered the 'Clear for Life' Acrylic 40 gal. It's super clear, super light-weight, 3'L x 15" deep x 16" tall. I think it holds about 36 gals. I've got mine deeply planted & currently stocked w/16 Ember tetras, 10 WCMMs, 10 Tiger Endler males, 8 Blue Leopard longfin Danios, 5 Yoyo Botias, 2 Borneo loaches; and it still looks pretty empty until feeding time cause everyone except the danios are off in the greenery. If I didn't love my snails so much I'd put a Pea Puffer in there.

Love my 20 long. Great for small schooling fish like zebra danios, rummy nose tetras, etc. Low height also means bottom, mid level, and top feeding fish can all feed at the same time with certain kinds of food. Everyone gets fed. I'd have to say my 45 high was my worst tank. Not fond of a 29 either. 40 breeder is working out well for me now as well. I had to make a support bar for the 40 breeder as the water weight was making the glass bow out 1/8-3/16" and my glass covers didn't fit as well near the center. I wish Aqueon would include one on their tanks like they do with the 48 inch tank sizes.

I'm sidelined with a broken arm which has me watching lots of videos and thinking about aquarium ideas to do when I have healed. I am loving your channel, and it is helping me maintain sanity! Nice informative video here. I love the 75 and the 40 breeder and have each. I've had 55's before, and much prefer the 40 breeder. You have a 4.5 sf footprint vs. 4 sf on the 55 so the 40B can carry the same or even a slightly higher stocking level. It is difficult for me to do a decent aquascape in a 55, because it always looks thin. And if you've got room for a 4' tank, why not go with the 75 or 90 which gives the added depth for better aquascaping? I'm planning to swap out my 40B for a Marineland 53G. Same footprint, but 4 inches more height - same as my 75. Keep up the great work!

I have 3 75’s and 2 40 breeders, the second I just bought to “expand” the surface area of the current 40 which houses 5 types of Tanganyikan fish. 2 of them will be moving soon. I was going to put them all in a 75 but thought 2 36X18 areas would be better than 1 48X18 area. I can’t swing the six foot tank yet, but if I could I would replace all my tanks with 120 or 180 or larger - even for small fish.

I have a 36 bowfront, because that's what I got for my birthday and what fits in my living room. I have had so much trouble keeping plants and fish in it, and I don't know why. I did get better lights now (LED technology advanced and prices went down) and they reach the bottom, but make algae on top like crazy. I wanted a 55 kit one day. I used to have a 35 gal and it was awesome for a really nice planted tank. I also had a 10 and 20 where I grew an amazing jungle full of fish.

75 gallon has got to be the most versatile tank on this list in terms of ease of entry, and stocking options. Especially for beginners who may want to take their starter setup to the next level.

You’ve sold me on a 40 breeder. Looks great for stocking and aquascaping! I find my 29 difficult for aquascaping with the height and lack of depth. Tall tanks would be great for a community stocked with bottom, mid and top dwellers, but it doesn’t seem all that common for folks to have enough fish in each group to make it necessary.

My current favorite tank is a 5 foot 100g which we hunted for in order to fit a long skinny space in our living room. My schools of smaller fish LOVE the longer footprint to scamper back and forth, plus enough room for my angels, plus I can reach the bottom and back still to maintain. 100g is about as heavy as we wanted to get on our main floor above the basement (and structurally the only place in the house to support one that size).

If the tank is higher than 15-16" I wouldn't go with the seachem because the 35 doesn't have an intake extension. In that case I would go with a Marineland PRO 175.

Hello Jason, I really enjoy your videos and one day hope to set up my own fish room. Taking the sizes you recommend here into consideration, what combinations of aquarium sizes do you feel work well together on a rack for a fish room. For example what would you put in a rack with a 180G, and all your 10G are on one rack together, is there a reason for that, why not have a row of 10G above or below a 180G. Really interested in your thoughts behind why you put certain sizes together on the same rack.

  • @PrimeTimeAquatics

    @PrimeTimeAquatics

You could do that, but I prefer to use the space on a double stand for like sizes. If you were doing 180 on the bottom the best tank above would be standard 20 highs, but turned length wise to get the full 24" of usable space.

Great video as I said before I'm just getting back into fish keeping And the 1st tank that I got was a pre owned 180 off craigslist that I had built into my wall which I have not set up yet and I was only going to have the one tank then I went to petco they had a sale I picked up A 75 gallon got a 36 gal from a friend of mine and then today I just picked up 150 gal tall. After watching your video of your 150 with your large fish and them having the space to swim back and forth Has me thinking what type of fish that I would like to put in that tank.

I love the 30 gallon long (36" x 12" x 16" high). Imo, it's the largest "small" tank available. Being short (5'1") I can still reach into the tank all the way to the bottom if necessary, yet that extra 4" in height makes a big difference over 12" in height. And because it's a bit longer, the tank has a left side, a middle, and a right side for fish that are a bit territorial. Drawback - not enough depth for really great aquascaping.

Thanks, Good Info. You might have liked a tank they stopped making 30 years ago, a six foot 100 Gallon (really just a lower 125 that gave the look of a large 33 gallon), I wish I still had that tank. If this is helpful to anyone the 55 Gallon is now half price at Petco for $75.00, while I like the 33 Gallon more, it will always cost more than that, as will the 40 Long (another tank I think you would like). A nice 2 tank/one stand set up could be 40 Long on top and 33 on bottom. I have a way over stocked 125 for my large Common, Comet, and Shubunkin Goldfish with hang on the back filters, and while the filters could never handle this, I use a 75 Gallon tank as a water changer to stay ahead of problems. The filter pads clog up in short time so I spray them with the garden hose until the insides of the pads gunk up and that no longer works, I have stretched it out longer by turning the pads inside out, trashing the carbon, and using the hose to spray both sides, so running a few more weeks without carbon but remember I have a 75 Gallon tank that I use as a water changer. I like 20 longs for small fish when I first get them and move them up later, also 20 long has worked well for me as a hospital tank for 6 or 8 inch fish to keep the cost of meds down (I have one Sarasa that I've treated 12 times with API Fin and Body Cure, it always works).

Currently on a binge of your videos as my first fish for my 20g long are shipping from Flip Aquatics this week, and I did not know there was a 33g long! I rent currently and it’s a basement apartment so I can get away with larger tanks, but the owners have asked me not to go larger than a 55 gallon. The 33 sounds way better to me though. Could an Angelfish go in a 33? Not sure if there’s enough height or not but maybe the 4ft length would make up for it.
